The Curse of the Pharaohs (An Amelia Peabody Mystery - Book 2)(Library Edition), by Elizabeth Peters

[Read by Susan O'Malley]

Victorian gentlewoman Amelia Peabody Emerson and her archaeologist husband are busy raising their young son; yet Amelia dreams only of the dust and detritus of ancient civilizations. Happily, circumstances are about to demand their immediate presence in Egypt. Sir Henry Baskerville had just discovered a tomb in Luxor when he promptly died under bizarre circumstances. The tabloids scream of The Curse of the Pharaohs!

Amelia and her husband arrive to find the camp in disarray and the workers terrified. A ghost even appears. It is not at all what Amelia considers an atmosphere conducive to scientific discovery. Thus the indomitable Victorian sets about bringing order to chaos and herself close to danger. How Amelia triumphs over evil and those who would stand between her and her beloved antiquities makes for a delightfully spirited adventure.

Great fun: A story set in an exotic locale with characters that resonate
By Mike Billington
I gather from some of the reviews I have read that there are people who dislike Amelia Peabody Emerson, her husband Radcliffe, and the plot of "Curse of the Pharaohs."
I, on the other hand, very much enjoyed this book by the late Elizabeth Peters. I like the fact that the book was set in late Victorian times and that it takes place - mostly - in Egypt. I like the fact that, during a period in English history (and American history, for that matter) when women were treated as little more than children that Amelia managed to forge a career alongside her husband. I like the fact that Peters took into account the manners and mores of upper-crust English society when writing this novel and that she remained faithful to the times when women of Amelia's standing did not raise their children but left much of that job to nannies and tutors. Finally, I like the fact that Amelia is tough physically, mentally, and emotionally: That she has the spirit and the spine to undertake an often-dangerous occupation that challenges not only her mind but also her body.
The plot is a little convoluted, which is not a bad thing in my opinion, and revolves around the death of an English nobleman well known for funding archaeological digs in Egypt. The nobleman's widow appeals to Amelia and her husband to finish the work her late spouse was funding and before long the Emerson's are off to Egypt on an adventure. There they find themselves in the midst of thieves, murderers, and untrustworthy sorts of all kinds.
To those that didn't like this book all I can do is apologize because I found that reading this novel was great fun; it's an enjoyable story set in an exotic locale with characters that resonate.
Peters had a distinctive narrative style, often peppering her stories with interesting archaeological tidbits about the ancient pharaohs who ruled Egypt in the days when it was the preeminent power in Africa and the Middle East. Her writing always moved the story forward at a fairly rapid pace.
My take: This is a 5-star read.

Curse of the Pharoahs delights Amelia Peabody readers.
By Della Ferguson Novick
This time, I listened, not wanting to miss a single word or thought expressed by this brilliant woman. Elizabeth Peters created a heroine who will live in the hearts of history buffs forever. Years of reading this wonderful series has honed my appreciation for all things archaeological and Victorian history from the female perspective. Her clever insights and innocent humor are a delight, a female Mark Twain with courage and compassion for the human race. Amazon Kindle gives me the entire series at my fingertips, endless pleasure.

Don't mind the curse
By Patto
I was frankly embarrassed to be seen reading a book with such a silly title. But don't worry. The curse isn't real, and the reader knows it from the beginning.

Rumors of a curse make it easier for grave robbers to scare people off in nineteenth century Egypt, where Elizabeth Peters' intrepid Victorian archeologists are at work.

Before reading this book, I'd suggest reading Crocodile on the Sandbank, the first book in the series. Then you'll know how the marriage of archeologist Radcliffe Emerson and adventure traveler Amelia Peabody came about. They are equally opinionated, clever, unconventional and courageous. They bicker constantly - and are mad about each other.

In this book Emerson and Amelia are taking over an excavation launched by Lord Baskerville in the Valley of the Kings. When Lord Baskerville dies suddenly and for no apparent reason, his beautiful widow hires Emerson. Amelia accompanies him.

The reader has several murders to look forward to, and a whole host of well-drawn characters to suspect. But the real appeal of these books is the lively narration by Amelia Peabody Emerson, who is the opposite of the Victorian ideal.

Amelia is in great shape from laboring side by side with workman at the tomb site. When danger threatens her husband, she thinks nothing of running through the night to his rescue, a revolver in one hand and an almost equally lethal parasol in the other.

This is pure escapist reading, but wittily written and authentic as to its archeological details. Elizabeth Peters is an archeologist. I'll eventually read the next book in the series, and deal as best I can with another embarrassing title (The Mummy Case).

The Age of Sustainable Development, by Jeffrey D. Sachs

Jeffrey D. Sachs has shown himself to be one of the world’s most perceptive and original analysts of global development in his groundbreaking books, including The End of Poverty and Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet. Now, in this major new work he presents a compelling and practical framework for how global citizens can address the seemingly intractable worldwide problems of persistent extreme poverty, environmental degradation, and political-economic injustice. Sachs outlines the holistic way forward: sustainable development. This provocative work offers readers, students, activists, environmentalists, and policy makers the tools, metrics, and practical pathways they need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Far more than a rhetorical exercise, this book is designed to inform, inspire, and spur action. Based on Sachs’s twelve years as director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, his thirteen years advising the United Nations secretary-general on the Millennium Development Goals, and his recent presentation of these ideas in a popular online course, The Age of Sustainable Development is a landmark publication and a clarion call for all who care about our planet and global justice.

Review

Jeff Sachs's admirable book explains what sustainable development means, why it matters, and our history in relation to our environment. It shows how the pattern of growth we have followed has placed intense strains on our planet and generated severe risks to our lives and livelihoods. Above all, it explains clearly where we can go and how to get there. It describes a potential future of great attraction in terms of wellbeing, community and prosperity, properly understood. It should, and I hope it will, strengthen both the understanding of the great choices we face and the resolve to act. It is a splendid achievement.

(Lord Nicholas Stern, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment)

This terrific book stands out for its breadth, clarity, mastery of detail, honest discussion of complex matters, and its author's practical experience and good sense. It is actually ten terrific books under one cover because its accounts of economics, history, health, development, education, gender issues, food, climate change and biological diversity are among the best available. If you want to understand the modern world, and if you have room on your shelf for only one book, this is your book.

(Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel)

There are very few authors that can so effectively rally the masses around an important cause―one that in this case concerns our collective future. There are still too few leaders with knowledge about global sustainable development challenges to affect the scalable changes that are needed.

Professor Sachs's book is a comprehensive summary of complex issues, but it breaks them down and makes them digestible and understandable while making the imperative clear. It will clearly contribute significantly in closing the gap between science and policy, and hopefully serve as a catalyst for action.

(Hans Vestberg, CEO, Ericsson)

An important, comprehensive and remarkably accessible book―a standout in a sea ofjargon-laden titles that fail to explain and vivify this enormously complex topic

(Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

Sweeping, enlightening, affecting, and invaluable, The Age of Sustainable Development should be available to everyone and consulted repeatedly.

(Booklist (starred review))

Clear straightforward prose and a wealth of statistics.... Sachs balances alarming forecasts with signs of progress.

(Publishers Weekly)

It is truly gratifying that an economist as distinguished as Jeffrey Sachs has authored The Age of Sustainable Development. His vast knowledge in the field and deep insights on various sectors of economic activity make him uniquely qualified to provide a view of the subject. Given the fact that almost a quartercentury has gone by since the Rio Summit of 1992, it is time for an authoritative volume such as the one Professor Sachs has authored for the benefit of global society.

(Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, director-general, TERI; former chairman, IPCC)

Comprehensive and crystal clear―what we need to make sustainable development a reality, not a dream.

(James E. Hansen, director, Earth Institute Program in Climate Science, Awareness, and Solutions)

The Age of Sustainable Development is both sobering and inspiring: sobering because it presents in great detail the unprecedented challenges facing mankind; inspiring because it assures us that we can meet those challenges, if only we summon the will to act.

(Kerry Kennedy, president, RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights)

It is, in my view, the best, most comprehensive and most articulate exposition of sustainable development ever written.... I would make this book compulsory reading for all politicians and business leaders.

(David Griggs Nature)

Sachs has probably produced the best book to date on how to manage the planet for 10 billion people.

(Fred Pearce New Scientist)

A comprehensive introduction to the field of sustainable development by one of its leading scholars, advocates, and practitioners.... Recommended.

(Library Journal)

In a book of incredible breadth, Sachs delivers a sobering account of the impact of human activity upon the balance of life on Earth.... Highly recommended.

(Choice)

An inspiring and enlightening read.

(Africa Report)

a perceptive, analytical, and hopeful book about the future...This landmark in economic publications presents a brilliant examination of major worldwide threats to the planet and puts forward ways to balance economic development and environmental sustainability to overcome those threats...It is a magnum opus; the chief source of information for any person interested in understanding what sustainable development is all about.

(Bill Schwab Missourian)

A thoughtful and comprehensive resource on this crucial topic.

(Civil Engineering)

A clear and cogent nontechnical survey of the world's major challenges beyond the preservation of peace and security.

(Richard N. Cooper Foreign Affairs)

Sachs's book is written for a popular audience and could be used as a complementary text for courses in environmental or development economics or in public health classes or environmental studies classes. Its breadth of insights and coverage is staggering and students and general readers will find new ideas on every page of the book.

(Matthew E. Kahn Journal of Economic Literature)

Review

A comprehensive and incisive overview of some of the biggest challenges facing the world today and further confirmation, if it were needed, that Sachs remains one of the most astute and authoritative observers of the age of sustainable development.

(Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever)

As the concept of sustainable development comes of age, Jeffrey Sachs takes us on a journey from the intellectual and normative origins to the science of complexity which define today's development choices. A compelling and often personal and engaged narrative, The Age of Sustainable Development reads like a "looking glass" through which to glimpse the future―a future still characterised by more questions than answers as to how 9 billion will―together―govern the sustainable development of our planet.

(Under-Secretary-General Achim Steiner of the United Nations, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme)

In this era marked by geopolitical and ecological crises, unspeakable structural violence and unprecedented inequality, on the one hand, and breathtaking advances in science and technology and untold opportunities, on the other, a new narrative for social, economic and environmental justice is urgently needed. Prof. Sachs, distinguished thinker, commentator and activist, charts a clear and compelling path, both moral and scientific, which cuts neatly through the increasing complexity and interdependence to the realization of a holistic vision of sustainable development. A very timely handbook to inform and empower all those who have a stake in the post-2015 debate on the future of our planet.

(Michel Sidibé, Executive Director, UNAIDS)

The Age of Sustainable Development is my candidate for most important book in current circulation. Inspirational, encyclopedic in coverage, moving smoothly from discipline to discipline as though composed by multiple experts, the book explains why humanity must attain sustainability as its highest priority―and outlines the best ways to do it.

(Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University)

Nothing new or useful
By doug korty
There is a wealth of information including probably over 100 charts and illustrations in this book. For many people, this and the accompanying text will make the book worth having. However, if you are going to write a 543 page book and promise some significant conclusions about important subjects, you need to do better than this book. This is more like a textbook that labors to cover all of the issues in a scholarly way but never really comes up with any new or useful ideas or solutions to the important problems of the world. Sachs is assuming his name and reputation will sell this book and convince people to go to the trouble of reading it and recommending it to others. There are better books:

Excellent and Insightful
By Christopher M. Chini
As a preface, I am a doctoral student in civil engineering specializing in sustainable systems. Understanding that this is from the standpoint as an economist, this is a very insightful and comprehensive book. However, I find it lacking in one distinct department. Its discussion on built infrastructure as a whole is lacking in terms of insight into an aging infrastructure core. This discussion from an engineering standpoint, would have pushed this book to five stars for me.

"The Age of Sustainable Development", is a most excellent book... Enjoy!
By G. Knoop
Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs is a world-renowned professor of economics (Columbia Univ.), leader in sustainable development, senior UN adviser, bestselling author, and columnist has written this cool new book "The Age of Sustainable Development". They were plugging it on the "Morning Joe", so I got it from Amazon and read it. It makes very clear the relationship between the three legs of sustainability: economy, ecology, and society. Whatever your politics, this helps to look at the whole picture with a hope that we will make smart decisions rather than partisan decisions. This is a powerful book with empowering knowledge and perspective. He tracks population, carbon, economic growth, and warming together to show the interwoven complexities of it all. I am an Architect, green-geek, and currently working on a Masters Degree in Energy Policy and Climate. This book was awesome. Where "An Inconvenient Truth" opened out eyes to climate change, this book widens our perspective on how we all might be difference makers. Sachs is a really good writer and researcher. Even the graphic tables and illustrations are simple, lean and clear. The written voice is also excellent and but in no way dumb-down, but also not condescendingly verbose; It is a good read. The future challenges are going to tough and will require a multifaceted approach to establish a way forward. We need the knowledge tools and so I highly recommend this book for the tool box. Enjoy!

This is a Book that will Expand your Horizons
By Barton Breen
This book was used as the core text in a Master Level course I took in Global Leadership.

It frankly is one of the best books I have ever read which surprises me even, given that it was used in this context from a primarily academic point of view. I did not expect this book to be as readable and as practical as I found it to be.

First, it's important to note the book's own disclaimer from the earliest pages. This is not a book that assumes nor is it designed to explain to the reader how other culture's think and function to where a reader will come away with a complete grasp of other cultures. Frankly, that is a nearly impossible task. If you're looking for a book on cultural etiquette that will catalog and recount all the possible missteps and misunderstandings that can occur when different cultures meet, this is not your book.

What this book does is break cultural elements into general categories and through the use of an extensive database of about 50,000 managers from around the world, it demonstrates how different cultures, defined primarily by national boundaries, approach universal challenges and compares them by use of a sliding scale between two identified extremes.

This is done for 7 different cultural elements. An example and the first element explored, would be the tendency toward Universalism versus Particularism. Universalism is the tendency of people within a specific culture to appeal to concepts of social justice, absolute values or the like and guide their individual decisions on that basis. This is a fairly high tendency with the United States for example. Particularism, on the other hand, is the tendency to define such choices more on the basis of one's relationship to the people involved rather than principles that apply in every situation. Russia and Venezuela (interestingly enough, both nations which seem perpetually at odds with the US and criticized by Americans for being "corrupt") are examples of nations that score higher in this realm.

While it can be a little dry to read through these elements, the authors do a good job of balancing data and theory with illustrations from real life and a continuing scenario that is returned to several times illustrating these elements in the context of a multi-national firm's managers meeting.

The primary value of this book for me has been the ability to suspend and step outside of my own biases, prejudices and stereotypes and from a more objective position, see and understand how different cultures approach situations. When that can be achieved then there is a better chance of coming up with a solution that will make sense and achieve a desired end, than when the noise common to cross-cultural or multi-cultural situations is left to reign free.

The authors are European and management consultants in the field. As a revision to a prior edition, this most recent book has expanded the value of the base concepts by including 2 additional chapters. One looks at South Africa which is a case study of multiculturalism within a single nation and it helps to identify what is no doubt true in other nations as well, namely that even with the measurements and objective evaluations of the earlier chapters, it is still important to do your homework and recognize that cultural nuances exist within the country by other factors such as ethnic group.

Illustrating this point even further is the final chapter which focuses upon the differences found within management task roles in the same firm and the same country. This is a little anticlimatic in some ways as it serves to diminish the value of the generalizations drawn earlier in the book, but it does serve to reinforce the warning of assuming too high a level of familiarity and thus moving from confidence into arrogance.

This book should be required reading not only for the business community moving toward multi-nationalism or transnationalism, but also for diplomatic personnel, world travellers or anyone wanting to raise their cultural IQ and sensitivity to different situations.

5 Stars. Buy this one to keep in your professional reference library.

Interesting work, not exceptional
By Bas Vodde
This review is difficult to write. On one hand, I really liked the book, but on the other hand, I had a lot of trouble getting through it and felt it to be boring at times. Part of it relates to the writing, part of it related to the verbosity. Anyways.

"Riding the Waves of Culture" is one of the well-known books on cultural dimensions (the most famous other one being the work of Geert Hofstede Cultures and Organizations: Software for the Mind, Third Edition). Trompenaars has collected a enormous amount of cultural survey results from many different countries. In this book, he shares some of the questions and the conclusions he drew based on the answers. Based on these survey results, he created seven cultural dimensions as a way to think about different cultural differences.

The book consists of 15 chapters. The three chapters provide an introduction. The next even chapters cover the seven cultural dimensions. Chapter 11-13 discuss organizations, organizational cultures and ways to reconcile cultural differences. The last two chapters (which I found least interesting) look at cultural differences within a country, one in South Africa and one in the US.

One of the key themes throughout Trompenaars book is that different management techniques should depend on the different cultures and that there are no universal management techniques (argument starting in chapter 2). Though, I do not disagree with his perspective, I do find it somewhat simplistic. For example, he gives the example that individual rewards will work well in a US or North European culture, but wouldn't work in a more collective (he calls communitatian) culture. That while at the moment there is a lot of criticism that individual rewards do not work well in US/North Europe (e.g. the work of Dan Pink Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us) and, on the other hand, I've seen individual rewards thrive in India/China (thrive as being popular, not as being working) which are countries which, according to their culture, they shouldn't work at all. Trompenaars is careful drawing too big conclusions though and talks about countries 'dancing on the dimensions' which allows him to withdraw from making any harsh conclusions :)

Chapter 4-10 relate to the seven cultural dimensions that Trompenaars defined, they are: Universalism vs particularism, individualism vs communitarianism, neutral vs emotional, specific vs diffuse, achievement vs ascription, attitudes to time, and attitudes to the environment. Each chapter discusses the dimensions and covers some of the specific questions that were asked during his survey. Each chapter ends advise on how to deal with the opposite dimensions' culture.

Another theme in this book is the need for reconciling cultures. The need for not taking one extreme perspective and yet not losing your own culture. The need to understanding the others culture and taking that into account when working with them (especially chapter 12-13). I do like this approach, though at times I felt the book was a little vague and abstract, even with the concrete questions it posed.

All in all, Riding the Waves of Culture is a good book, but it wasn't an exceptional book. For me, I had trouble getting through it and I guess that it had to do with the writing style. At times it was hard to follow and contained too many words. Rating-wise, I was doubting between a 4 stars (a really good book) and 3 stars (a book that covers the topic, but wasn't exceptional) and decided to go with 3 stars. The main reason for that was the writing and the trouble I had getting through the book. If you look for *one* book to read on cultural differences, this is not the one. If you are very interested in knowing a lot about cultures, then this is a must read.

Essential reading for executives - and politicians
By C. D. Lynn
This book is deservedly already an international management classic, and should be required reading for anybody who needs to interact with other nationalities and cultures. Hofstede got there first with his classifications of cultural dimensions, but Hampden-Turner & Trompenaars' are arguably more compelling, and - more importantly - the book is both highly readable and replete with case studies. It gives American and Northern European business people insights into why their assumptions about what motivates people from other parts of the world are wrong, and why so many US-centered initiatives founder on the rocks of unrecognized cultural differences. Send a copy to the White House!

Great PMP Prep Tool!
By Ollie
After about two weeks of preparation, I passed the PMP exam. Through that time, I used several sources. I spent a week doing self-study using Jennifer Greene and Andrew Stellman's Head First PMP: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam. I then went through a week-long prep class. To say I did a lot of practice questions and exams is an understatement. The weekend before the actual exam (I took it on a Monday), I almost exclusively practiced the questions from PMP: Practice Makes Perfect. I must say, this book was a great complement to all the other study material I had. The first section of the book, which consists of some fill-in-the-blanks, true/false, and matching, really helps to assess where one is in terms of knowing the PMBOK material. The full-length practice exams in the book (there's 4 total with slightly over 200 questions in each) very closely resemble the types of questions on the exam. I would say that out of all the many practice exam questions that I went through from a variety of sources, the questions in Practice Makes Perfect, in my opinion, were most similar to the actual exam in terms of level of difficulty, wording, and scope. Knowing the material is obviously the most important thing to passing the test. Next to that, it's extremely important to practice the questions. This book is one of the best resources I had to do the latter.

Really good book to prep for your PMP exam
By Tamer
I think I was one of the 1st people to purchase this book couple of months back. Now that I am done with my exam few months back and putting all my PMP books on Amazon, I decided to write few words only on this book. Because that was one of the books that I wasn't sure to buy or not, and glad I did. The exam is very close to this book. And I did purchase many exam books and online tests. Exam had long questions that was very similar to ones in this book. not to say that others are bad... but this is a really good book to prepare for the PMP exam. Best Wishes with your exam

PMP Prep Exam not updated
By JOSE-LUIS COUSINO
Belongs to the PMbok 4th Edition which makes it obsollete. The existing PMP Exam from PMI is based in the 5th Edition. The worse part is that in your advertising of this book does not say anything. So I assumed that it was the last version. I don't undestand who will purchase a book like this if it is not updated.
Thanks for allowing me to write my comments.

The inspiration for the new Amazon Original Pilot

It was the 1960s––a time of economic boom and social strife. Young women poured into the workplace, but the “Help Wanted” ads were segregated by gender and the “Mad Men” office culture was rife with sexual stereotyping and discrimination.

Lynn Povich was one of the lucky ones, landing a job at Newsweek, renowned for its cutting-edge coverage of civil rights and the “Swinging Sixties.” Nora Ephron, Jane Bryant Quinn, Ellen Goodman, and Susan Brownmiller all started there as well. It was a top-notch job––for a girl––at an exciting place.

But it was a dead end. Women researchers sometimes became reporters, rarely writers, and never editors. Any aspiring female journalist was told, “If you want to be a writer, go somewhere else.”

On March 16, 1970, the day Newsweek published a cover story on the fledgling feminist movement entitled “Women in Revolt,” forty-six Newsweek women charged the magazine with discrimination in hiring and promotion.  It was the first female class action lawsuit––the first by women journalists––and it inspired other women in the media to quickly follow suit.

Lynn Povich was one of the ringleaders. In The Good Girls Revolt, she evocatively tells the story of this dramatic turning point through the lives of several participants. With warmth, humor, and perspective, she shows how personal experiences and cultural shifts led a group of well-mannered, largely apolitical women, raised in the 1940s and 1950s, to challenge their bosses––and what happened after they did. For many, filing the suit was a radicalizing act that empowered them to “find themselves” and fight back. Others lost their way amid opportunities, pressures, discouragements, and hostilities they weren’t prepared to navigate.

The Good Girls Revolt also explores why changes in the law didn’t solve everything. Through the lives of young female journalists at Newsweek today, Lynn Povich shows what has––and hasn’t––changed in the workplace.

Review

Gloria Steinem
"The Good Girls Revolt is as compelling as any novel, and also an accurate, intimate history of new women journalists invading the male journalistic world of the 1970s. Lynn Povich turns this epic revolt into a lesson on why and how we've just begun."

Jeannette Walls“A meticulously reported and highly readable account of a pivotal time in the women’s movement.” Kirkus“Povich’s in-depth research, narrative skills and eyewitness observations provide an entertaining and edifying look at a pivotal event in women’s history.”

New York Times
“The personal and the political are deftly interwoven in the fast-moving narrative…. The Good Girls Revolt has many timely lessons for working women who are concerned about discrimination today….But this sparkling, informative book may help move these goals a tiny bit closer.”

Boston Globe“Solidly researched and should interest readers who care about feminist history and how gender issues play out in the culture.”
Macleans“Povich’s memoir of the tortuous, landmark battle that paved the way for a generation of female writers and editors is illuminating in its details [and] casts valuable perspective on a trail-blazing case that shouldn’t be forgotten.”
American Journalism Review“[Povich] strikes a fair tone, neither naïve nor sanctimonious.... Among her achievements is a complex portrait of Newsweek Editor Osborn Elliott and his path from defensive adversary to understanding ally.”

Liesl Schillinger, New York Times
“Women still have a long way to go, the journalist Lynn Povich rousingly reminds readers in The Good Girls Revolt, her fascinating (and long overdue) history of the class-action lawsuit undertaken by four dozen female researchers and underlings at Newsweek magazine four decades ago…. If ever a book could remind women to keep their white gloves off and to keep fighting the good fight, this is the one.”

Washingtonian“Crisp, revealing…. [A] taut, firsthand account of how a group of razor-sharp, courageous women successfully fought back against institutional sexism at one of the country’s most esteemed publications.”

Philadelphia Inquirer
“With vivid recollections of the author and major and minor participants, Povich, a party to the suit, succeeds in making recent history enraging, poignant, and even sexy.”

"Equality is never given, it is taken." -- Jane Bryant Quinn

When the Newsweek editors decided to write a cover story about feminism in March 1970, it was a hot topic, just the sort of current events coverage that the news magazine was known for. The day the issue hit the stands, a group of women who worked at Newsweek filed a civil rights suit against the magazine. Newsweek was being sued for gender discrimination.

Lynn Povich, one of the few women writers at Newsweek at the time, was one of forty-six women filing the suit, and she has gathered the documents and interviewed many of the people involved, on both sides, to ensure that the story isn't forgotten. The resulting book left me feeling both exhilarated at the progress they made in 1970 and beyond, and dismayed at the lost ground that will have to be fought over yet again.

The case was almost laughably open and shut, from a legal standpoint. Women with Ivy League degrees were hired at Newsweek as secretaries or researchers, and rarely rose above that. Men with similar degrees were hired as writers and went on to become correspondents and editors. Women who tried to become writers were discouraged or simply passed over. The few who did become writers were paid lower wages than men at the same level.

But the system was so entrenched that most of the women were reluctant to stir the pot. They were good girls.

While some of the management at Newsweek were surprised that the women won the suit, they shouldn't have been. On the other hand, it probably shouldn't have been a big surprise to the women that two years after having won the case, there were even fewer women writers and editors at Newsweek than before. They had to sue again.

Povich quotes Jane Bryant Quinn (who worked at Newsweek, but not at the time of the lawsuits) as saying "Equality is never given, it is taken."

The book opens and closes with the plight of several women working for Newsweek today who are astonished to find themselves facing obstacles such as the ones that were supposed to have been overcome forty years ago. They were unaware of the events of forty years ago. The Good Girls Revolt may have to be waged yet again.

A must-read for women in the workplace
By Diane
My sons like to tease me and call me a feminist (yeah, they don't get it), a badge I proudly wear, so I was surprised that I knew nothing about the revolt by the women working at Newsweek magazine, who in 1970 brought a complaint to the EEOC against the magazine charging discrimination against them in hiring and promotion practices.

Lynn Povich, a writer who worked at Newsweek and was part of the suit, brings the story to life in The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women at Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace. The women were employed at the magazine as researchers, but were never promoted to writer or editor, even though they had similar education and experience as the men hired as researchers and quickly promoted to writer and editor.

Nora Ephron, who worked at the magazine, described the "caste system"
"For every man there was an inferior woman, for every writer there was a checker", said Nora Ephron. "They were the artists and we were the drones. But what is interesting is how institutionally sexist it was without necessarily being personally sexist. To me, it wasn't oppressive. They were going to try to sleep with you- and if you wanted to, you could. But no one was going to fire you for not sleeping with them."
Mad Men's Madison Avenue offices weren't the only places where sex and booze ruled the workplace.

Povich is an excellent writer, and parts of this book, especially where the women were secretly meeting and trying to recruit other women to join the suit, read like a tense spy novel. Will they get caught?

They hired a young and pregnant Eleanor Holmes Norton to represent them. "The editors, who had supported the struggle for civil rights, were completely baffled by this pregnant black woman who questioned their commitment to equality."

The male editors, some of whom seemed like great guys, just didn't get it. What was worse in many of the women's eyes, was that Katherine Graham, who owned The Washington Post and Newsweek, didn't get it either. There is a powerful scene where Graham meets with the women and appears baffled by their action.

Along with the historical context of this story, I enjoyed reading about the inner workings of the magazine. We had a subscription for many years, and I always turned to read Anna Quindlen's back page column first. I had no idea that the struggle for equality there was so recent.

I recognized so many names in this book- Qunidlen, Ephron, Eleanor Clift, Jane Bryant Quinn and Maureen Orth among them. But it is the names that I didn't know, they are the important names, the ones who laid it all on the line so that the above mentioned women would be well known. Women like Povich, Pat Lynden and Lucy Howard paved the way for the other women with this lawsuit.

This book is essential reading for all young women starting out in the workplace. They must know who fought the battles for them so that they have the opportunities now available to them. The women of Newsweek are heroes, and I think that this book would be perfect for a high school or college journalism curriculum. I was also lucky enough to meet Ms. Povich at this year's Book Expo America, a true honor.

So much progress, so much still to achieve.
By Cynthia
I had the oddest feeling while reading this book that time both stands still even as it flees by. Povich starts the book with a vignette of three young professional women and their plight of career stagnation due to discrimination. Then she describes the stories of some of the principal complainants in the 1970 class action suit brought against `Newsweek' for sex discrimination. Povich outlines not just their professional stories but also some of their relevant personal history including their outlooks on life, their career goals, and their unique personalities. This makes the story personal and the reader can't help but root for their triumph. It seems so ludicrous from this distance to realize a lot of these women had Ivy league educations yet were stuck in the mail or research rooms of `Newsweek'. What a waste of an education, drive, and talent. They did win the suit but sadly, they had to continue to fight for what they'd supposedly won through the courts. An entrenched social system doesn't change overnight. Also, not everyone longs to be at the top, many are content with fulfilling jobs that allow time for a family life. The downside to the situation is the women who'd been exiled to fact checking for the male writers sometimes didn't aspire to be writers but felt compelled to try out for that slot after the suit and if they succeeded in becoming a writer they felt obligated to write `hard' news rather than arts and culture articles regardless of their interests. Worst of all few of the women who lodged the suit benefited personally from it. It was the women who came after them who were able to take advantage of the opportunities these women made possible. Povich walks us through the decades post-suit and what that meant for women.

One of the worst enemies for women then and now is the desire to be `nice', to be a team player, and to be thought well of. Women in positions of power are much more likely to be disliked than those in the typing pool. Worst of all finding a mentor is a challenge for women. Men can more easily find an older, more successful man to teach him the ropes, someone who will champion him and his career goals. Standing out or achieving recognition as a woman is seen as being pushy and rude. Not so for men especially if they have someone powerful to back them. It was then that I realized how relatively recent some of these changes were. And sadly the experiences of Jessica, Jesse, and Sara, the three women who sued for more job opportunities and less discrimination in 2010, still felt the sting of a culture that under estimates women and the family in general even today. This is a fascinating history of the workplace and I love how Povich informs on how both sexes benefited and/or were deprived of finding a work situation that best fit for them. So much progress, so much still to achieve.
