The Shadowkiller: A Novel, by Matthew Scott Hansen

Bigfoot wants revenge! Just as Jaws terrified people right out of the water, The Shadowkiller will keep readers out of the woods...for good. The legend continues: The Story of Bigfoot is among the most enduring legends of all time. Sightings are reported every day, and scientists such as Jan Goodall have proclaimed their belief that it exists. The Shadowkiller is reminiscent of early Stephen King-a good, old-fashioned ghost story. This scary, funny, gory tale will make even the most hardcore skeptics think twice before going camping,

From Publishers Weekly
Hansen (Confessions of an Enron Executive with Lynn Brewer) makes his fiction debut with a predictable thriller about the legendary North American ape-man Bigfoot. After a fire set by humans claims the lives of a male Bigfoot's family, the creature goes on a rampage of revenge, killing and devouring countless victims in the Pacific Northwest. The authorities first get a sense that something unusual is transpiring when several people disappear, and large, mysterious tracks are found in the vicinity. Three men with different agendas track the beast: Ty Greenwood, a former software mogul shunned after he earlier reported sighting a Bigfoot; Chief Ben Eagleclaw, a Native American actor with a spiritual connection to the creature; and sheriff's detective Mac Schneider, who first finds concrete physical traces of the rampaging animal. Light on science and full of gruesome violence, this isn't in the same league as Jurassic Park, Jaws or Philip Kerr's Esau, an intelligent speculation concerning Bigfoot's Asian cousin, the Abominable Snowman. From Booklist
You're forgiven if you think this novel is a spoof. Clearly designed to evoke Jaws-type responses, Hansen's tale of Bigfoot on the rampage features blood, gore, plucky heroes, hapless victims, and a great deal of silliness. First-time novelist Hansen believes in the existence of Bigfoot (although evidently, from his afterword, he does not know that the famous 1967 Patterson Bigfoot footage has been exposed as a hoax), and he really wants us to take the book seriously. Many scenes are well written, but overall the book is more reminiscent of Claws, a murderous-bear movie made a couple of years after Jaws: it has all the same basic ingredients, and it tries to be scary, but you can't really take it seriously. Although a failure as a serious thriller, the book is a rousing success as a campy, brainless, unintentionally humorous blend of adventure and horror--just the sort of thing that kids of an earlier era used to enjoy at the Saturday matinee. "The Shadowkiller is a thrilling debut from a talented new writer. Matthew Scott Hansen has crafted an old-fashioned and very convincing campfire tale that will raise the hair on the back of your neck." -- Nelson DeMille

Murderous Squatch Story
By YB
Shadow Killer is an unusual story in the sasquatch genre. Shadow Killer's characters include a strong deputy sherrif, a stereotypicaly beautiful blond and ambitious to a fault TV reporter, a psychic Native American TV Indian Chief who mentally communicates with the antagonist, a mega rich software mover and shaker turned US Forest Service worker and part-time bigfooter, numerous pitifully weak victims, and a murderously angry, incredibly intelligent and twisted rogue sasquatch. This sasquatch antagonnist is not your typical dumb ape, or animal, or even a chimp-like intelligent hominid. No, this big guy is very different: intelligent, thoughtful, capable of planning and calculating attacks, probing and psychic to boot. Another feature that sets Shadow Killer apart from other books is that the author jump starts the story with the cause for the sasquatche's murderous rampage through Western Washington in the beginning pages of the book. The pace of the story is relentless with fairly good character development.

I liked the pace and constant action as well as the peek into the sasquatch's emotions and thought processes, which is different from most sasquatch books. I also liked that the big guy is not one of those "nice" sasquatches but has gone rogue. This sasquatch is dismissive of the "little legs" as weak, cowardly yet tasty meat as it is the biggest and baddest creature in the forest.

What I didn't like was the crude demise of the stereotypical blond, ambitious-to-a-fault TV reporter, who in this story tried to sleep and manipulate her way to the top, but met an ironic, degrading demise at the hands of the sex-crazed sasquatch, a new twist for a sasquatch story for sure. Before she died, she wished all too late that she should have been a better person--a demeaning revelation which did not add to the story at all.

Shadow Killer is an adult sasquatch thriller. Some potential readers will not like all of the plot's twists and turns, although they have been cleverly worked out. This is not your typical story of a camper or hiker who has had a traumatic sasquatch encounter, and ever after they're obsessed with proving the existence of sasquatch. This is a fight to the death between an enormous antagonist who is on a personal rampage through Western Washington for revenge and a coterie of characters who are like a Noah's Arc of the sasquatch genre--there's something for almost every squatcher here.

The Shadow Killer
By Deeann Davis
Well, I liked this book. Yes, the subject matter is a bit silly: a 1400 pound, 11 foot sasquatch (with an intelligent, but limited, mind) running all over the place killing people for revenge. Kinda goofy, I agree. But the author wove a pretty good story and developed the characters pretty well. There were lots of characters in the book to keep up with but they all came together to make the story flow. I was really disappointed in one character, Ben. He's an old Indian who has the ability to "communicate" with the creature mentally. He could have added much to the story if this telepathy concept had been fully developed. But sadly, it wasn't. That was disappointing. But the rest of the book was okay. The dust cover says it will make you think twice before going camping again. Hardly.

I think this is Matthew Scott Hansens first novel. He certainly has potential. He wove a good story.

A Hardcover and a Keeper
By Ronald A. Martin
I was fortunate to find this one in Hardcover for a dollar. With that being said, I definitely got my money's worth. I was actually pretty surprised I found it interesting. I am not a big believer in Bigfoot, but I found the story and characters interesting. I found "Dark Woods" to be a bit better but I think both are excellent reads in their own right.

The Tailor-King: The Rise and Fall of the Anabaptist Kingdom of Muenster, by Anthony Arthur

He was only a Dutch tailor's apprentice, but from 1534 to 1535, Jan van Leyden led a radical sect of persecuted Anabaptists to repeated triumphs over the combined powers of church and state. Revered by his followers as the new David, the charismatic young leader pronounced the northern German city of Muenster a new Zion and crowned himself king. He expropriated all private property, took sixteen wives (supposedly emulating the biblical patriarchs), and in a deadly reign of terror, executed all who opposed him. As the long siege of Muenster resulted in starvation, thousands fled Jan's deadly kingdom while others waited behind the double walls and moats for the apocalyptic final attack by the Prince-Bishop's hired armies, supported by all the rulers of Europe.

With the sudden rise to power of a compelling personality and the resulting violent threat to ordered society, Jan van Leyden's distant story strangely echoes the many tragedies of the twentieth century. More than just a fascinating human drama from the past, The Tailor-King also offers insight into our own troubled times.

From Publishers Weekly
Carnage abounds in this shocking account of the 16th-century Anabaptist revolt of M?nster, during which some 9000 residents barricaded themselves in the north German town for more than a year, proclaiming a militant, anti-Catholic theocracy. Led by the 24-year-old Jan van Leyden, a charismatic tailor's apprentice from Holland, the revolt quickly jettisoned its promise of a community united by voluntary faith, becoming instead a textbook study in extremism. The Anabaptist message, contends Arthur, was predicated on the appeal of the irrationalAsignally, a zealous belief that the Second Coming would unfold in 1534 in M?nster, where the loyal Anabaptists would wage the ultimate battle between good and evil. A master propagandist, the young, self-anointed King Jan swiftly ordered all books save the Bible consigned to a bonfire and even declared a new order of marriage: mandatory polygamy. Amply serviced by his 16-wife harem, Jan then loosed what Arthur (Bushmasters, etc.) alternately describes as a reign of terror and a carnival of madness upon the town, in which pikestaffs whirled and halberds raged against unrepentant adherents of the Roman Catholic Church. Both Catholics and Protestants opposed the Anabaptists, and the sect's contempt for temporal authority of any kind made it the object of persecution by Germany's powerful princes. Students of millenarian movements will enjoy notable parallels to today's apocalyptic sects like the Branch Davidians. Vividly written and credibly researched, this book is entertaining history with implicit contemporary relevance. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
Every revolution has a radical fringe, and the Reformation was no exception. The Anabaptists, who took over and created their own kingdom in the northern German city of M?enster, frightened even Martin Luther. Arthur (English, California State Univ., Northridge) has written an excellent account of the Anabaptist kingdom, which has not received much attention recently. His is one of the more readable academic histories in recent memory. Arthur deftly uses primary sources to craft a story that reads like a good thriller. His analysis in the final chapter is a masterly comparison of the events in M?nster to what happened to the Branch Davidians in Waco, TX. Any doubts about the importance of the bloody events of more than 400 years ago are erased by the parallels that Arthur draws. How could Waco, Oklahoma City, and Kosovo have happened? It all has happened before, with ghastly results. Highly recommended for public libraries and undergraduate collections.ARandall L. Schroeder, Wartburg Coll., Waverly, IA

The sixteenth-century Anabaptist uprising in the northern German city of Munster, under the leadership of tailor's apprentice Jan van Leyden, is a fascinating story that has spawned many popular accounts in German. Its elements include the heroism, intrigue, greed, sex, and violence of a late-twentieth-century blockbuster novel, and Arthur's timing in presenting his account neatly coincides with the current bull market for apocalypticism, aka millenarianism. For the most part, Arthur draws on historical records and fictional accounts to recount the transformation of a protodemocratic uprising into a theocratic nightmare distorted on all sides by flawed and often unscrupulous leaders and followers whose hope regularly led them into gullibility. Arthur's attempts to draw explicit parallels with recent events and the Freudian framework within which he draws them are detractions, but they are restricted almost entirely to the final chapter. Although Arthur imparts little about Anabaptism, he provides a riveting story and pointers to other sources for reflection on the still important interplay of religious faith and theological and political authority. Living history at its engrossing best
By A Customer
The Tailor King is a masterful account of what happened both inside and outside the ancient walls of sixteenth-century Munster when Protestant religious fervor transformed otherwise intelligent and rational men into irrational creatures capable of unbelievable brutality. Readers beware - the graphic descriptions and concrete imagery bring the sixteenth-century fully alive. The characters in this book could easily populate a wide-screen, action-filled film. The author's meticulous research and gift for storytelling combine to create a rare pairing of erudition and page-turning readability. Like the narrator who seizes the wedding guest in Coleridge's "The Ancient Mariner," the author seizes the reader's attention and does not let go. His calm journalistic voice only heightens the "you are there" quality of the book. And his occasional strokes of subtle dry wit surprise and delight. This is living history at its engrossing best. The carefully annotated illustrations, culled from archives and museums in Germany, highlight events in the story and are a unique bonus. A well told story from first page to last!

Yet Another New Zion: Religious Madmen in Westphalia
By Leslie Reissner
While the threat posed to modern society by religious fundamentalism has been underscored by the events of September 11, "The Tailor-King" reminds us that suicidal craziness is not limited to some extreme readers of the Koran. This book is about the Anabaptist Kingdom that appeared in the prosperous North German city of Muenster in 1534-35, with disastrous results for everyone involved. A century later, from 1618-48, the Thirty Years' War would be the ultimate expression of European Christian religious and political madness and it is ironic that the treaty that ended it, the Peace of Westphalia, was signed in the City Hall in Muenster, ushering in an era of peace and prosperity on the continent.
Muenster is a solid, bourgeois kind of place and in the 16th Century it seemed equally so. An important trading centre, it showed its considerable wealth in its merchants'mansions and warehouses, its churches and impressive cathedral. The beginning of the Reformation saw the city split into Catholic and Lutheran interests, but it continued to function until a group of Anabaptists, regarded as heretics for their insistence on adult baptism, gradually seized control of the town. Eventually they drove out the majority of other believers and the ranks of Muenster swelled with Anabaptists from other areas, particularly Holland. A charismatic leader, a former baker named Jan Matthias, was one of these. He had been called to Muenster by Jan van Leyden, another Dutch Anabaptist, and a group led by a wealthy local merchant. Together they declared war on the local Prince-Bishop and were rewarded with a siege of their fortified town. Deemed heretics by pretty well everyone, Catholic and Lutheran, the Anabaptists were determined to hold out, seize the countryside and establish a New Kingdom of Zion.
Anthony Arthur describes the Company of Christ as starting off as a well-disciplined, effective organization and he gives us some background on the Anabaptist movement, which was divided into pacificists (Mennonites and similar groups) and the militants. As the siege wears on, the Company of Christ takes some strange directions. From a city council, it moves to a Council of Elders and then to essentially a religious dictatorship.. Property is to be held only in common, criticism is rewarded with summary death. All the church towers are destroyed. Jan Matthias challenges the Bishop's army to single combat, with foreseeable results, and Jan van Leyden takes over. He now makes polygamy obligatory and arranges to crown himself King. The people starve, when their leaders are not personally murdering them, and those who try to leave are killed by the Bishop's soldiers outside. The whole thing comes crashing down when the Anabaptists are betrayed and the city taken. Jan van Leyden and the other most senior leaders are tortured to death and their corpses put on display in cages that are still to be seen on St. Lambert's Church in Muenster. Interestingly, the cages are original, but the church itself is not.
This book is only 244 pages, but although Mr. Arthur has looked at many sources it is clear that he has had to make an effort to flesh the book out. There are some diversions into Freud and theories that the Company of Christ was a sort of proto-Nazi organization and a long digression into the biblical story of Judith and Holofernes. I doubt that the Anabaptists were particularly Nazi-like, but exhibited many of the characteristics of a totalitarian system, more similar to Chinese Communism in its most irrational phases. And irrational it truly was-reading this book, one cannot reconcile the good burghers of Northern Germany, with their dull but solid reputation, with this lot of passionate crazies. It is a fascinating story even though one senses the whole time that it can only end one way. Of particular note is the enthusiasm with which people are put to death, often in very imaginative and quite unpleasant ways, and by both sides. The Anabaptists, as they roll onwards into madness and calamity, are treated by the author with more sympathy than the Establishment figures opposing them. Receiving particular scorn is the Prince-Bishop, Franz von Waldeck, who is portrayed as incompetent, venal and luckless.
It may seem strange to us today that adult baptism, with its element of free will, could be the subject of such rage between Christians but one need only look at the fine points argued by religious fanatics today with deadly passion to understand that the more things change, the less they do.

Nothing but the Blues: The Music and the MusiciansFrom Brand: Abbeville Press

Like Abbeville's "Country: The Music and the Musicians", "Nothing but the Blues" is an illustrated, comprehensive history of music and musicians, also covering promoters, producers and others who have shaped this powerful and enduringly popular American musical art form. A "guide to the best" discography is included at the back of the book which will appeal to blues fans and record collectors. Tracing its origins to slave-era work songs and "hollers", blues is more popular than it has ever been. Larry Cohn, principal author of "Nothing but the Blues", is the producer of a five-year CBS/Sony Music historical reissue of classic blues recordings. The first two-CD set in the series, featuring the music of blues "father" Robert Johnson, earned Cohn a Grammy. While country music commands a large but unfocused audience, the blues draws on a more concentrated and committed audience, many of them avid blues recording collectors, who subscribe to scores of blues-oriented publications. In 12 essays commissioned specially for the book, "Nothing but the Blues" traces the African American origins of the music, its early development as popular entertainment, its first recordings, its regional differentiation, its many stylistic dimensions, and its contemporary manifestations. County blues, urban blues, Cajun and Zydeco influences, the evolution of rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, and the blues revival are all fully covered.

From Publishers Weekly
In this extensively illustrated, comprehensive volume, Grammy-winning CD producer Cohn provides an elegant pictoral and intellectual history. In the first of 11 essays, Samuel Charters writes on the roots of the blues; in others, David Evans digs into Texas and Deep South blues and Mark A. Humphrey examines the gospel and urban traditions of the blues. Bruce Basti, Jim O'Neal and Mary Katherine Aldin are among the writers covering such topics as white country blues, the 1960s blues revival and the blues today. Richard K. Spottswood offers an excellent essay on women and the blues. The 325 illustrations include Leadbelly's NYPD rap sheet, recording contracts and rare historic photos of blues performers making their music. Cohen does full justice to this rich and vibrant chapter of American musical history.

From Library Journal
This compilation of 11 articles, edited by Grammy Award-winning blues producer Cohn, examines the beginnings and progress of the blues. The book starts with a penetrating essay by noted blues writer Samuel Chaters, who investigates the origins of the blues. It follows with chapters that clearly, extensively, and intelligently describe early blues in the Deep South and Texas, women and the blues, urban blues, the Sixties blues revival, and such often-neglected aspects of the blues tradition as gospel, Piedmont regional blues, white country blues, and the role of music researchers like John and Alan Lomax. Only chapters about the current blues scene and rhythm and blues offer disappointingly superficial treatment. Lavishly illustrated, well researched, and written in a lively style, this book should become a standard on the topic for both the general public and scholars. Recommended for most collections. The publisher is releasing a limited edition of this work that includes a compact disc.--Ed.

Sweeping and Readable
By New England Yankee
This is a very enjoyable read. While fundamentally a blues history book, the chapters are organized topically along lines that will make sense to any blues enthusiast, and there are lots of pictures that (for me, anyway) help to cement the content in memory. Shots of musicians and albums pepper almost every last page. Comments on individual albums and songs, short anecdotes, and quotes keep the text moving at a brisk pace.

Chapters cover the topics of roots, Texas and Deep South blues, women in the blues, gospel influences, urban blues, East Coast and Piedmont blues, a chapter on the various "field trips" taken by several people to record early blues, the roots of R&B, and blues today. The individual chapters were written by different authors, variously ranging from academics to blues publication writers. The material hangs together extraordinarily well, though - to the point where the differing authorship is hardly noticible, in the best intended sense. Unusual for most blues titles is also in-depth coverage of white blues, including commentary of the cross-overs between country music, particularly early country music, and the blues.

The book includes a discography and bibliography. I would have really liked to have had some commentary with both, however, as they are pretty simplistic listings. For perspective on individual recordings, you'll have to go elsewhere. I use the "All Music Guide to the Blues" - All Music Guide to the Blues: The Definitive Guide to the Blues.

As B.B. King says in his short introduction - this is a "loving presentation" of the blues. This is not a deep dive into controversies or academic arguments over roots and development. Rather, it focuses on sub-genres, artists themselves, labels, and recording and entertainment history. I'd recommend it anyone looking for perspective across the entire genre.

Without doubt a "definitive reference"
By A Customer
Every once in awhile a book comes along that can virtually answer all your questions and at the same time incorporate stories on artists both obscure and well-known...that keeps you from putting it down [very difficult for a book that can be considered a reference work].

The pictures included alone are well worth the price of the book. Many of them rare and never seen before by many of the blues fans who would be interested in this work.

If you are going to have one book in your home library on Blues....this is the one to have.

EXCELLENT Blues information
By LakeKids
We were looking for some background information of old time blues performers and their music and found this book, lovingly used but in great condition, and what a find! This goes waaaay back and talks about so many great people and the areas where the blues was born. Since reading we have been able to make a few purchases of great blues musicians (on Amazon, they have everything!) like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Leroy Carr, Dr. Ross, and so many more. It's so great to now have such a valuable reference book so we can look up song titles and see who wrote/who recorded them. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about this national "treasure" of music and musicians.

Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes, Letters, by Marilyn Monroe

Fragments is an event―an unforgettable book that will redefine one of the greatest icons of the twentieth century and that, nearly fifty years after her death, will definitively reveal Marilyn Monroe's humanity.

Marilyn's image is so universal that we can't help but believe we know all there is to know of her. Every word and gesture made headlines and garnered controversy. Her serious gifts as an actor were sometimes eclipsed by her notoriety―and by the way the camera fell helplessly in love with her.

Beyond the headlines―and the too-familiar stories of heartbreak and desolation―was a woman far more curious, searching, witty, and hopeful than the one the world got to know. Now, for the first time, readers can meet the private Marilyn and understand her in a way we never have before. Fragments is an unprecedented collection of written artifacts―notes to herself, letters, even poems―in Marilyn's own handwriting, never before published, along with rarely seen intimate photos.

Jotted in notebooks, typed on paper, or written on hotel letterhead, these texts reveal a woman who loved deeply and strove to perfect her craft. They show a Marilyn Monroe unsparing in her analysis of her own life, but also playful, funny, and impossibly charming. The easy grace and deceptive lightness that made her performances indelible emerge on the page, as does the simmering tragedy that made her last appearances so affecting.

Review

“There is delight in this picture of the icon as more sincere, striving, intellectually ambitious, and perceptive than we'd ever have guessed.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Sentences trail across the page, then merge in clumps, like paper airplanes tossed into a net; multiple cross-outs, repetitions and misspellings make them a challenge to decipher. Nonetheless, a certain potency resides in their runic quality…Passionate decoders of the Monroe legacy will have a field day..” ―The New York Times

Marilyn, The Woman She Really Was.
By James Cabello
If you are looking for a book about Marilyn's life and dramatic details about being an orphan, foster child, and struggling in Hollywood, this isn't the book for you.

This book is for the people that truly cared about Marilyn the person, and want to learn about her true self. This is a book with her thoughts, feelings. There are poems, personal letters, and written thoughts throughout the book.

A high quality scanned picture of the actual page that she wrote things on is placed side by side with an easy-to-read transcription on the other page. The pictures included might not be new to some fans, but there are many beautiful pictures included.

Although the book is 230 something pages in length, it's actually half of that because of the scanned pictures, which contain the exact content of the transcripted pages. I also doubt this is the only content there is available of Marilyn's writings.

Overall, a book for anybody that would appreciate an insight into the woman that truly was Marilyn. A woman who loved, doubted herself, and fought interpersonally.

After reading this, her short life will be sincerely tragic, and you will see Marilyn in a new way, as a person, and not an object or another 50s actress, life most people do.

Marilyn Monroe was so much more than an actress or sex symbol, as proven in this book. She was a genuine human being.

Did we ever really know her?
By Reine des Coeurs
Many a biography will come out and has come out on Marilyn, as her mystique and the public's fascination with her seems never to fade, but very few actually give you an idea of what she thought, who she was and how she saw the world around her. This beautiful collection of letters, poems and assorted writing is both touching and melancholic. I've read so many books on this lovely lady, but this is the first one that's ever really made me question on whether or not I really knew anything at all about Marilyn Monroe. She was so much more than she appeared to be. And that makes the tragedy of her short life all the more heartbreaking.

The Marilyn We Never Knew, Until Now - Superbly Done - Five Stars !!!!
By Richard of Connecticut
Was there a film star as famous as Marilyn Monroe? A star that became even more famous in death then in life. In the end all we know of her is what other people have written, or the photographs that were taken of her. All of it, the writing, the images, it has all been staged to make us think whatever it is the crafter wished us to respond to. All of it until NOW.

With this book Fragments, we have for the first time what Marilyn thought, what she wrote, and how she was. We see her gifts as a person and her craft, not the image, not the notoriety. In the 1950's she came to New York and grew very close to Lee Strasberg, who was the head of the Actor's Studio. Strasberg who we all know as the Meyer Lansky type figure in the second Godfather movie was very enamored of Marilyn as we all were.

The funniest line in the book is when Strasberg who is a stickler for being on time complains to her about being timely for meetings. She says she simply cannot be on time. Strasberg's response was, "Then be early."

When she died in the summer of 1962, she left her belongings to Strasberg who was married to a much younger woman Anna. Years later, Anna went through the boxes that Marilyn had entrusted to Strasberg. Mrs. Strasberg came across a collection of writings on random pieces of paper such as hotel stationery, envelopes, and a series of different notebooks never completed. The writings also included poems, some finished, some unfinished.

Much of the material was written in a disjointed fashion, with scribing and cross outs, sentences started here, and finished somewhere else. Marilyn had her own way of doing things. With the help of professional editing the authors were able to make the random writings begin to make sense, and the thought then became, can this be turned into a book?

The answer was a RESOUNDING YES.

Thus began the journey to take the unaltered writings of the real Marilyn Monroe and weave them into a manuscript that could be published, so that the rest of us could get to know the essence of this woman in an unvarnished fashion. I have gone through every page of this book and the results are both astounding and gratifying.

This is no DUMB BLOND

That's the first thing you need to understand. The public image was to sell sex, but behind it was a sensitive human being with a keen desire for both knowledge and introspection. She did not have a high school education, and so while a young star in Hollywood; she went to UCLA and studied the history of literature and American history as well. How many of us are doing that today?

She loved books and at the time of her death she owned more than 400 of them. She had without question read Milton, Whitman, Hemingway, Kerouac, Dostoyevsky, and Beckett. We all knew she had brains. The fact that she was married to one of America's greatest playwrights, Arthur Miller indicates that.

Miller had recommended that she read Carl Sandburg's six volume biography of Abraham Lincoln, which she did cover to cover. She loved art as exemplified by her knowledge of Dali, De Kooning, and Warhol, all three of whom she helped promote. She was also a student of the Italian Renaissance and appreciated Botticelli, Goya, and Degas.

ORGANIZATION OF FRAGMENTS

The book is laid out beautifully. I think of it as a work of art in itself. In a chronological manner the authors put Marilyn's writings on the left. It is actually a photograph of the original writing in her handwriting. You see the cross outs, add-ons, miss spellings and all the mistakes that you would never ever see in a book.

On the right hand side is a typed word for word transcription of what Marilyn wrote on the left. In addition you will see via an easy to understand system of black and red lines where the authors had to show the continuation of her thoughts in a different area of the page. This makes the entire page easy to read and to follow.

Strasberg demanded that the star undergo classic psychoanalysis in New York as a way to get in touch with herself as an actress. There is also much correspondence in the book, again in Marilyn's handwriting, some of which is with her analyst. Near the back of the book are two pages with photographs of some of the books from the star's personal collection. These include Madame Bovary, A Farewell to Arms, and the Sun Also Rises. Put it all together and you get incredible insights into who Marilyn Monroe really was.

CONCLUSION:

For those of us who were smitten with her, this is a wonderful addition to our libraries. I have never accepted the official version of her death based on the circumstances as I understand them, and as the years go by and new information becomes available, it seems less likely that she died of her own hand. It is also too convenient for a lot of people that no longer wanted her around but this is another story for another book.

If you FRAGMENTS, you will get to know a brilliant, savvy young woman who loved knowledge, life, reading, introspection, and oh yes, she just happened to be the most famous actress of her generation. You will love this book. Pick yourself up a copy and get to know her as we never have, and thank you for reading this review.

A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, Twenty-fifth Anniversary Edition, by Norman Maclean

Just as Norman Maclean writes at the end of "A River Runs through It" that he is "haunted by waters," so have readers been haunted by his novella. A retired English professor who began writing fiction at the age of 70, Maclean produced what is now recognized as one of the classic American stories of the twentieth century. Originally published in 1976, A River Runs through It and Other Stories now celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary, marked by this new edition that includes a foreword by Annie Proulx.

Maclean grew up in the western Rocky Mountains in the first decades of the twentieth century. As a young man he worked many summers in logging camps and for the United States Forest Service. The two novellas and short story in this collection are based on his own experiences—the experiences of a young man who found that life was only a step from art in its structures and beauty. The beauty he found was in reality, and so he leaves a careful record of what it was like to work in the woods when it was still a world of horse and hand and foot, without power saws, "cats," or four-wheel drives. Populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, and set in the small towns and surrounding trout streams and mountains of western Montana, the stories concern themselves with the complexities of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, playing cribbage, and being a husband, a son, and a father.

By turns raunchy, poignant, caustic, and elegiac, these are superb tales which express, in Maclean's own words, "a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by." A first offering from a 70-year-old writer, the basis of a top-grossing movie, and the first original fiction published by the University of Chicago Press, A River Runs through It and Other Stories has sold more than a million copies. As Proulx writes in her foreword to this new edition, "In 1990 Norman Maclean died in body, but for hundreds of thousands of readers he will live as long as fish swim and books are made."

Review
"[Maclean] would go to his grave secure in the knowledge that anyone who'd fished with a fly in the Rockies and read his novella on the how and why of it believed it to be the best such manual on the art ever written--a remarkable feat for a piece of prose that also stands as a masterwork in the art of tragic writing." (Philip Connors Nation)

"Altogether beautiful in the power of its feeling. . . . As beautiful as anything in Thoreau or Hemingway." (Alfred Kazin Chicago Tribune Book World)

"It is an enchanted tale. . . . I have read the story three times now, and each time it seems fuller." (Roger Sale New York Review of Books)

"Maclean's book—acerbic, laconic, deadpan—rings out of a rich American tradition that includes Mark Twain, Kin Hubbard, Richard Bissell, Jean Shepherd, and Nelson Algren. I love its sound." (James R. Frakes New York Times Book Review)

"The title novella is the prize. . . . Something unique and marvelous: a story that is at once an evocation of nature's miracles and realities and a probing of human mysteries. Wise, witty, wonderful, Maclean spins his tales, casts his flies, fishes the rivers and the woods for what he remembers from his youth in the Rockies." (Publishers Weekly)

"Ostensibly a 'fishing story,' 'A River Runs through It' is really an autobiographical elegy that captivates readers who have never held a fly rod in their hand. In it the art of casting a fly becomes a ritual of grace, a metaphor for man's attempt to move into nature." (Andrew Rosenheim The Independent)

“Forty years ago, a book appeared that landed fly fishing in the center of American society. At the time, fly fishing books were not places where people played for keeps, where family promises were forgotten, where young heroes died, where relationships that were problematic in life become more so in death. Fly fishing books instead offered an idealized patch of life…. A River Runs Through It and Other Stories certainly stood that one on its head.” (Will Ryan American Angler)

A book you will read more than once.
By George G. Kiefer
Norman Maclean began writing late in life, passing away not long after penning this extraordinary piece, depriving us of his gift just as he arrived. The book is actually three short stories but the focus is clearly on the novella "A River Runs Through It". On the surface, the title story is his recollections of his father, a Presbyterian minister, and his troubled but talented brother, with whom he fished. Set in the Montana of Maclean's youth, he paints exquisitely vivid and beautiful word pictures of a land and water and family now gone. At the core is the frustration of the often-futile attempt of trying to help another or trying to save a loved one from their self-destruction. There are passages here which are as wonderfully written as anything in English. Not a page passes without discovering a superbly crafted gem. "So it is...that we can seldom help anybody. Either we don't know what part to give or maybe we don't like to give any part of ourselves. Then, more often than not, the part that is needed is not wanted. And even more often, we do not have the part that is needed." "It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us." Throughout the tale, his life, his religion, his family, his fly-fishing are metaphors, each for the other. And the words of each are heard in the waters and stone of the rivers. He is haunted, he tells us, by waters. I am haunted by his words which approach poetry.

Warning: This book isn't really about fishing.
By P. Riser
A River Runs Through It is quite simply the single greatest book I have ever read. Maclean's language is as terse and economical as any in Hemingway, but Maclean imparts the type of true feeling and emotion into his simple words that Hemingway himself was incapable of producing. A River Runs Through It is not a story about fishing, but rather a tale of family. The family just happens to share a love of fishing, and Maclean's love of waters has more to do with its close association with his family than with the actual fishing that takes place there. It is the family's tragic loss of Paul, the true master fly-fisherman of the clan, that ties Maclean to waters and inspires the closing lines of the novella. A River Runs Through It delves into interpersonal relationships in a manner which grips the reader and makes him/her reflect on his/her own family. Although I am myself an avid fisherman, I am a more avid reader and I can say that for my part, the fishing element of the story is unimportant except for its association with Maclean's family. Maclean's prose is beautiful to point that his description of a common object or occurence could bring the reader to tears. A River Runs Through It is quite simply the most beautiful thing I have ever read. Period.

An absolutely beautiful book. Currently sitting in my local coffee shop with blotchy cheeks and mascara running down my face.

I don't usually write reviews, but I was compelled to write one for this book. I am a writer, not a fisherman. I actually don't really like fishing nor know anything about it. That didn't make me any less spellbound by this tale.

The writing is gorgeous and precise and sly and so unexpected beautiful and logical and funny and emotional. It reads differently than the books I'm used to reading. There's no faux suspense. There's no tricks or shock value. It's just a beautiful story.

It took me a little while to get completely invested. I'd say I read the first 30 pages slowly, and then the remainder all at once (of the title story).

I know this isn't a great book review, but just wanted to add my opinion. I'm a 26 year old female who works in the tech industry. My one fishing experience was when I caught a fish with my grandpa when I was 7 and it was bleeding and I cried for two days. I loved this book. Don't discount it because it's about fishing. It is beautiful and perfect, or maybe I should say "more perfect."

The best surgical anatomy book
By A Customer
This is the best surgical anatomy book that I have read. It has very good text that outlines surgical antomy in simple wording. It has good simple hand drawn diagrams that are easy to follow and emphasise parts of the text. The best part of the book is that it is practical, and being a small size you can carry it on ward rounds and use it to study from before theatre lists. I would reccomend it for people in their second to last and last years in their medical degree and for first year doctors doing their surgical training terms.

Best surgical anatomy book ever!
By Melanie Turner
This book is a handy guide particularly for final year medical students and those doing a surgical term. It has superb concise descriptions as well as simple hand drawings to accompany the text. It is pocket sized, so that you can carry it to the hospital and read up about procedures and even read up about the procedures before theatre. It is a fantastic book and it a great reviewing tool. I would strongly recommend that it be the surgical anatomy textbook for all medical students.
