Great resource, comprehensive coverage, a must-have for NP's starting their own practice

In my opinion, this book, along with Nurse Practitioner's Business Practice And Legal Guide are absolute "must-have" references for any nurse practitioner starting a private practice (and good to have for those already in private practice as well).

I had originally bought a few general "Starting your own business" type guide books and all fell short and were disappointing. Most were just a survey or very superficial overview more appropriate for folks dreaming about starting a business and wondering what is involved, but just not comprehensive enough for the serious individual actively starting up a new business. I gave up on finding a good reference book and ended up consulting an attorney and a CPA to have the questions answered that I needed regarding business structure, various legal issues and tax concerns. Shortly thereafter I found and bought this book and I really wish I'd found it before spending the money to consult the attorney and CPA as a good portion of my questions to them were covered in this book.

As you can see this book is pretty comprehensive and covers a good portion of what you need to know to get started. I suggest you pair it with the Buppert book I mentioned above, as that has a much stronger legal perspective and I think you'd be pretty comprehensively informed between the two. I have found them both invaluable during the process of starting up my private practice.

About the Author
Mary Aiken, PhD, is the world’s foremost forensic cyberpsychologist. She is the director of the CyberPsychology Research Network and an advisor to Europol, and has conducted research and training workshops with multiple global agencies, from INTERPOL to the FBI and the White House. Her research interests include cybersecurity, organized cybercrime, cyberstalking, technology-facilitated human trafficking, and the rights of the child online. She is a member of the advisory board of the Hague Justice Portal, a foundation for international peace, justice, and security. Her groundbreaking work inspired the CBS television series CSI: Cyber. Not just what THEY are doing; watch yourself

Before I discuss the book, consider the author. For anyone who watches CSI: Cyber, Patricia Arquette's character is based on Ms. Aiken. The author is a cyberpsychologist and considered tops in her field, which is about the ways in which people change their behavior online and the ways in which criminals exploit those changes. If you own a computer, you're probably aware of issues like identity theft, hacking, and trying to keep your passwords safe, but you may not realize how you contribute to your own victimization.

For example, you're sitting in your jammies, telling the universe (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, you name it) every detail of everything you've done that day. If you were sitting at a bus stop, would you tell a stranger, face to face, all those things? Yet there you are, blurting out your life to possibly billions of strangers. A particularly chilling section of the book describes how your child, gaming online, can be thoroughly vetted by a predator without realizing it.

Ms. Aiken's book goes into many aspects of many issues. Consider the difference between sexting and adultery; different countries regard it as the same, while others - including the US - do not, because no physical contact has taken place. What are the ethics of internet use? What are the politics? She gives many examples, all of them interesting.

The scariest part of the book is arguably the discussion of the Deep Web. I had never heard of, or even imagined, that such a thing exists. Once she explained it, I was immediately tempted to get my computer offline...until I realized that too much of my life involves online activity, and some of it is out of my control, like business email.

Ultimately, this is both a frightening and enlightening book. Whether you're concerned about modern technology and how it impacts you, or just curious about changes in society, it's worth reading. It's pretty accessible, though all the terms that the author coins can be a bit annoying. I'm sure they will become the buzzwords of the future, though.

A New Wild Frontier is Here and This Author Makes A Compelling Case That We Are Woefully Unprepared for It.

If you are reading this, there's a real good chance you're a frequent to heavy internet user and, like many people, have no idea what goes on "behind the screen" as you peruse websites and enter various bits of information. Take a quiz on Facebook to determine how many colors you can see? That's an app that's data mining and compiling information about you. Right now as you read this, Amazon is noting in its algorithm that you might like books that deal with technology, and will likely feature those types of books when you return to the site in the future. When you Google something, Google stores this in a cookie and features results for future results based on your past searches. Many of us have traded our privacy for convenience and Aiken is sounding some alarm bells.

Why do children have to be constantly entertained? she wonders while discussing the dangers of parents handing tablet computers to their toddlers to shut them up for a few blessed moments of peace. Probably the most interesting chapter is the one on the "Dark Web" which is another layer of the internet that most of us do not see and cannot access with standard browsers. It's a place populated by thieves who sell credit card numbers and heroin as if they are the latest top sellers here on Amazon.

She coins the phrase "cyberchrondria" to describe a whole suite of anxieties related to online search of real and imagined health ills. Who among us hasn't searched a symptom and then become worried that we might have some terrible disease that comes up in the search results?

Aiken has a number of recommendations to help avoid some of the pitfalls she sees in her research. She suggests a separate internet for children, much like the US government uses for defense, walled off from the dangerous internet of porn and viagra commercials. Right now, she says, parents have to figure all this out on their own and the vast majority don't have the knowledge to make informed decisions.

This book is fascinating and, while not a quick read, is an interesting outline of a world that most of us touch every day but know so little about. Highly recommended.

Well worth a read

This book examines the effects of a number of online technologies such as social media, messaging and various forms of content on behaviour both positive and negative. I pre ordered this book having attending a conference in Dublin at which the author presented. I was impressed with what she had to say at the conference and intrigued by the research she is doing. Unfortunately not much original research is outlined in this book and while it does introduce some concepts such as the online facilitation effect overall there is not much new or original thinking. It is as some others have pointed out a little disorganised but overall an interesting and recommended read. I was expecting more new concepts but that is related to my own anticipation rather than any fault with the book. When aimed at the mass market the content is about right.

The author uses a number of psychoanalytical references and this helps explain the core concepts of human behaviour across the various the areas addressed in the book. This is an interesting and welcome perspective for a researcher at the forefront of modern psychology. Bear with me for my own interpretation of the psychodynamic theme across the areas addressed. For the young child the primary care giver traditionally the mother but gender neutral is ever present to fulfil all their desires. From the child perspective they appear to exist solely for this purpose of meeting their needs. As the child grows the care giver is drawn to other responsibilities maybe another child or another care giver (such as the father). For the first time the child realises there is something they desire that they cannot have and have a problem to resolve. This problem relates to how they deal with lack and desire and sets a tone for similar problems, common in later life. The problem to be resolved is the Freudian Oedipus complex, the child desires the primary care giver and wants to remove the draw on their attention. We all have our own unconscious relationship with lack and desire and how they are apparently fulfilled online is a major factor in our online behaviour.

Relating this to the books content we are now faced online with apparent quick fixes for common psychological desires and how we handle that desire and its instant gratification mediates our relationship with online technologies. If we have a healthy relationship with lack and desires online technologies have some dangers but are not really a problem. To be controlled such as we control a healthy diet but overall positive. If we do not have such a healthy relationship it may cause us some undesired side effects.

As social animals it is ecologically beneficial for us to be valued members of our social groups, presenting ourselves well and defending ourselves from actions/insults which may compromise our standing. Traditionally this played our over years and we interacted with a relatively small group of people. Now we are faced with apparent instant social status via Facebook, Twitter etc. and how we deal with the social desire to be part of a group and self-present in light of this instant solution in a large way affects our online behaviour. Online Porn also described in the book is a more extreme example of the desire and instant gratification relationship for which online access has radically changed behaviour both online and offline. The online disinhibition effect described in the book makes us less aware of the consequences of our online activity and more likely to engage than we would we were physically aware of the audience and could experience their verbal and nonverbal feedback. It also makes us less aware of the consequences, again well outlined in the book.

This is not dissimilar to problems presented for instance with easy access to items like salt, alcohol, drugs. We biologically programmed to consume salt when available, an ecological advantage for a scarce resource the modern easy access and abundance causes us problems. Just like solving problem with obesity due to an unhealthy relationship with food is difficult solving issues with our online behaviour will not be easy particularly with the large commercial interests involved.

A masterful insight on improving your leadership skills

There are a vast number of leadership books available. I have read a few of them over the 25 years that I have worked in financial services management. I confess I have often been tempted by the high profile leadership gurus/business celebrities that flood the market with their wisdom and especially those that offer quick solutions to becoming more successful as a leader and manager.
This book exceeded all of my expectations and it's written in an engaging, honest and practical style. It's easy to understand and the author helps by summarising the information he provides at the end of each chapter, which really helped me memorise it and remain focussed.
What I did not expect at all, was that this book would to take me on a journey of soul searching about how serious I am now, or ever have been, about being the best leader I can be, or indeed the best team member.
By covering psychology, it took me to places, where I have to say I felt distinctly uncomfortable about myself and my performance, not just in business but in my social, spiritual, and family life too.
As a self-help manual, I will be using this book as a reference point for some considerable time to come. Hopefully, familiarity and improvement on my part will ease the personal anxiety of the first encounter.
I am not an expert book reviewer, as you can no doubt tell but I do heartily recommend this book to any team member, manager or leader that wants to improve their business performance and perhaps their life.

Simply, the best leadership model

I'm coach and soft skills consultant and the production process I follow everytime I'm trying to create a new product is something similar to: search the best content, pick up the best you can learn and develop what you need. After 3 months of searching leadership techniques and models, this is the best model you'll find and I'll tell you why.

First, because this book explains a model as simple as possible, letting you get as deep as needed while understand the basic content.

Second, because after some years working on these issues I've read a lot about leadership and every key idea this book gives you will make you say 'Oh my god, that's what I've been felling/seeing/hating/searching for too long.' There're no errors on the focus or on the approach: every key idea is a kye of leadership.

Third, because it works. I've read it. Then I read it again. Then I used it to coach other people and the results are awesome.

Great book, great content, great leadership model.

A Handbook for Wise Leadership

At last we have a well-researched, deeply thought-out and clearly presented handbook for wise leadership. This book presents a robust model of leadership for the good, based on the concept of leadership presence, with self-mastery at its core.

Integrating and transcending previous, less accurate models of leadership, author James Scouller presents the innovative "Three Levels of Leadership" model. The three levels are: Public, Private, and Personal leadership. The first two outer levels may be familiar to students of leadership theory; however the third, inner level is the most influential yet often neglected leadership realm.

Leadership is defined, the essential responsibility of a leader is identified, four dimension of leadership are described, and tables identify 34 distinct public leadership behaviors and 14 private leadership behaviors. Self-assessment tools, available on-line, allow readers to determine those skills that are strengths and those areas that need the most improvement. Of course these can also be used to evaluate others who seek to lead you.

But improvement in personal leadership--increasing that often elusive quality of leadership presence--provides the greatest opportunity. We learn that leadership presence has these seven qualities:
1. Personal Power--Accepting full responsibility for what you do
2. High, real self-esteem--based on an accurate assessment of your competencies
3. Drive to do more, to grow--striving to improve and contribute toward the good
4. Balance--integration of your purpose with respect for the free will of others
5. Intuition--creative insight and foresight distilled from your grasp of complexity
6. In the now--paying full attention to current issues
7. Inner peace of mind and fulfillment--joy and a state of psychological flow

Together these create a wholeness based on an authentic understating of your true self. Genuine leadership presence contrasts with charisma, the more familiar yet superficial behavior often cited as a leadership characteristic. People sense the difference, respond with trust, and become inspired by your leadership presence.

While the first half of the book is a well presented leadership guide--surveying, augmenting, and integrating existing leadership advice and theory--the second half of the book breaks new ground that can unleash true leadership potential.

Personal leadership requires developing skills in three areas:
1. Technical knowledge and skills includes knowing details of the particular business you are in, along with general skills in individual psychology, group psychology, and time management.
2. A positive attitude toward others is the belief that other people are as important as you. If you want to excel as a leader you must serve those you lead without harming others
3. Self-mastery is a commitment to self-awareness, self-integration, growth, and flexible command of your psyche.

The book introduces a new model of human psyche. This model is combined with principles of personal change that assist readers in overcoming resistance when making the personal transformations required to increase self-mastery and become a wiser leader.

Several tools for developing self-mastery are provided in the form of mental exercises to be repeated daily over periods of months or years. These include the three core techniques of: disidentification and centering, mindfulness meditation, and self-enquiry, supplemented by three techniques of: mental rehearsal and affirmation, knowing your values, and developing a personal mission-vision statement.

Use these exercises to deliberately discover your true self--who you truly are--identify and dismiss unconscious limiting beliefs, and get on with the work of leading wisely.

The richness of this book does justice to the complex topic of leadership, yet the book is well-written, accessible, and easy to understand and apply. Each chapter ends with a summary of key points, several helpful tables throughout the book assemble, list, and summarize essential skills, and a companion web site provides supplementary aids to help readers master the materials.

About the Author

Alethea Morrison is the author of Homegrown Honey Bees. Their experience raising chickens was chronicled in Chick Days. Morrison works as the Creative Director at Storey Publishing and serves as president of the Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association.

Photographer Mars Vilaubi chronicled the adventures of his three backyard hens from their first days out of the egg through their first days laying eggs in Chick Days. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Best Beekeeping Book for Beginners

This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.

PROS:

- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.

- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.

- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.

- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.

- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.

- Once you have a full year of beekeeping under your belt, you'll want to move on to more substantial reference books like "The Beekeeper's Handbook" or "The Practical Beekeeper."

THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!!!!!!!!!

Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.
I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.
It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!
I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.
Then arrives this book!
Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!
There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!
I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

Very good bee-ginners book. I would not recommend this to anyone who has read other bee books though. The information is useful but very basic. Newbee and not sure about beekeeping?- great first book

Takes earthquake prediction to a whole new level

I had ordered this book several times before, but needed another copy. I had my own ideas about this subject and this book confirmed them, even though the author was only able to cite the 'whats' rather than the 'whys' animals behaved the way they did before earthquakes. The animals were responding to what would be causing the earthquake rather than predicting the earthquake. It turns out that earthquakes are a two-stage process. The first stage is the effect that changing magnetic fields have on water in confined spaces such as in the soil or in what are called 'inclusions' in crystals in the earths surface. The second is the effect that tides in the earth's crust has on causing the earthquake itself after the changes in the water lubricated the rocks to make it easier for the tidal stresses to to cause the ground to actually shift instead of just being stressed.

The changes in the Earth's magnetic field could be traced to high solar wind or a massive ejection of solar particles that heads toward Earth. Eclipses are especially problematic for earthquakes.

The author's discussion of the clouding of well water was a very important clue that provided the key evidence that my ideas were correct/ The behavior of water in changing magnetic fields accounts for a host of other unexplained phenomena.

It also appears that parts of the Earth may be superconducting, and that changes in magnetic fields may cause those parts of the Earth to change from the superconducting state to the non-superconducting state or vice-versa causing great stress in that part of the Earth which creates an earthquake when tidal forces in the Earth causes the ground to shift.

Similarly, volcanic eruptions may be related to these processes. Ironically, I first bought this book at the MIT Press when I was looking for another book, POLYWATER. It turns out that the two phenomena are related. Human levitation and unexplained aerial lights are other rare phenomena that are also related to these issues.

As the author points out, the Chinese take these animal behavior phenomena very seriously, and have people report any such behavior so that the authorities can determine if they should have people evacuate the area. Ironically, some earthquakes in Asia that occurred in the late 1990s after I had already read this book confirmed the clouding of well water before these earthquakes.

This is a very valuable book for those who are curious to learn more about these dangerous phenomena.

One of the additional ironies was that, as a physics PhD candidate at MIT in the early 1960s, I became interested in superconductivity because of the effect of magnetic fields on the superconducting phase change. The idea that this might be related to earthquakes never crossed my mind until high-temperature phase change superconductors were discovered in 1986, and a professor of geology at at the University of Minnesota pointed out that the crystal structure of parts of the Earth's crust were similar to the structure of the crystals used by researchers of high-temperature phase-change superconductors. I immediately saw the possible connection to human levitation and eventually to earthquakes. This illustrates the advantage of reading widely and thinking about possible connections if your objective is to understand the physics of the unexplained. Most researchers just delve deeply into their narrow specialty rather than spread themselves more broadly as I did. But, then again, they have jobs and research grants to worry about, whereas I did my research more as hobby. Needless to say, Amazon gets a lot of business from me as a result.

I love this book. It answers all my questions.

I stumbled on this book while I was a biology student 30 years ago, and it answered all my questions.

In the ensuing years, I have become sensitive to magnetic (piezoelectric) fields similar to those described by Mr. Tributsch. I doubt I would feel a field as minute as the ones a fault puts out before an earthquake, but you never know. I can feel the field a CT scan puts out, and the technicians say they can't believe it - they've never heard of such a thing - they didn't even know it put out "a field." I tell them, "Give me a CT machine and let me take it home and I'll sleep so well you won't believe it."

They shake their heads. "Only if you have $50,000."

I can also feel the charge of a dry wind when I ride my bicycle, so maybe I would be able to feel the seismic field.

I actually wonder if feeling these fields is something primitive man could do naturally, and we've "domesticated" ourselves out of it. I believe reading this book was one step along the journey that led me to feeling magnetic fields. Beginning to work with magnets for pain relief was the second step. Doing aura work was the third.

Perhaps each of us has the undeveloped capacity.
