Fractured is a novel by Catherine McKenzie. It is definitely worth reading. It is one of those novels that you can hardly put down and then you get back to it as soon as you can. It definitely is realistic and keeps your interest. As you read, it is easy to put people you know or are acquainted with in the place of the characters.
Julie Apple Prentice is the writer of a best seller and who is the victim of a stalker. Her husband, Daniel, is willing to make a career move and move from Seattle to Ohio to get away from her stalker. So Julie, Daniel, and their six-year-old twins make the move to Cincinnati. The children are in school and Daniel at work while Julie makes an attempt to write her second novel. Unfortunately, she has problems getting started so starts running of a morning to see if that will help. She starts running with her next door neighbor, John. Julie has a hard time making friends so it was unusual that they became good friends. Other than John, the only friend she makes in the neighborhood is Susan. Everyone else seems to form a dislike to Julie and her family, especially the head of the neighborhood committee, Cindy Sutton. No matter what Julie does, it seems she just makes matters worse.
John Dunbar has been let go by his company and sets out to develop an IT company at home. He helps Julie make her computer safer from hacks when he gets into her files easily. He then helps her set up her webpage. Meanwhile his wife Hanna and their son Chris take a dislike to Julie. He has to walk a thin like between trying to calm his wife down and to seem to be on Julie’s side.
An impossible situation becomes even more so when something happens that could break up the entire neighborhood.

Couldn't stop reading!

This is not a book to start reading when you have something else to do - I downloaded it this morning and couldn't put it down until I'd finished. Catherine McKenzie has artfully put together a complex and intriguing story. A bestselling writer and her family have moved to Cincinnati after being hounded by a stalker, but rather than finding domestic bliss, they realize they've moved into a suburban nightmare. There's the nosy woman down the street who heads an intrusive neighborhood organization (complete with nasty emails, a website designed to encourage spying, and an all-but-required monthly block party that would make anyone want to run for the hills!), the attractive guy across the street who is tempting in more than one way, and lots of teenage drama. It's a brilliant set up, one that McKenzie uses to flawlessly execute a twisty plot that is perfectly paced and populated with well-drawn characters.

This is anything but an ordinary novel of suspense. It's elevated not only buy McKenzie's stylish prose, but by the of issues it addresses. A perfect book club choice!

A WRITER, A STALKER, & TRAGEDY

Best-selling author Julie Apple (Prentice), who wrote The Murder Game, moves with her family from Tacoma to Cincinnati after a stalker seemingly upends her life.

Her husband, Daniel, and their twins, Sam and Melissa, soon seem to settle into their new lives, and Julie works each day on a second book.

Fractured opens with a scene entitled “Today, 6 a.m.”, and we watch as John Dunbar, Julie’s neighbor, ponders events that have transpired. He is clearly in the middle of something troubling, something tragic that has happened in the recent past. Something involving legal action.

From then on, the non-linear story is told, alternating between Julie and John, and moving forward from “a year ago.” Bits and pieces of events are brought out over this time period, and we soon realize who, among the characters living on Pine Street, could be suspects in the tragedy that occurred; a tragedy that we only find out about eventually.

Right away, I really hated one of the characters. Cindy Sutton, a control freak who seems to set the rules for the neighbors, and eventually starts a website that encourages them to spy on one another, seems hell-bent on judging everyone. She cloaks her actions in terms of “safety,” but the “check-ins” on the site pinpoint what everyone else is doing and where. This site seems to feed into the harassment that begins against Julie…again.

Hanna, John’s wife, was another character I couldn’t warm up to…she seemed all too willing to believe neighbors like Cindy, who distrust Julie. John’s friendship with Julie is another issue between them.

Then there is Chris, John and Hanna’s teenage son, who is sneaking around with Ashley, Cindy’s daughter. Ashley was another teen I didn’t like, probably because she also seems untrustworthy.

With neighbors like these, how can Julie settle in and become part of the seemingly cozy surroundings? How did the behavior of Cindy, Hanna, Chris, and Ashley…among others, contribute to the tragic events that unfolded?

A suspenseful tale that kept me glued to the pages until the very end, the story also generated all the emotions you might experience if these events were happening to people you know. When the final reveal was brought forth, I knew that none of the characters would be the same again. And neither would the readers of this book. 5 stars.

About the Author
Greg Everett is the head coach of the USA Weightlifting National Champions Catalyst Athletics weightlifting team. He remains a competitive lifter at the senior national level with a top placement of fifth in the National Championships, and is the 2015 Masters National Champion and masters American record holder in the clean & jerk in the 105kg 35-39-year-old category. Everett is the primary content creator for Catalyst Athletics, known internationally as one of the top sources for weightlifting educational material and weightlifting training programs, and publisher of multiple books on weightlifting. Catalyst Athletics also offers coaching certification based on Everett’s methods and curriculum, and has been providing weightlifting seminars around the world for almost ten years. He has authored multiple popular books; Olympic Weightlifting: A Complete Guide for Athletes & Coaches has been the most popular book on weightlifting available since shortly after its original release in 2008. He owns the Catalyst Athletics gym in Sunnyvale, California, where he coaches his competitive weightlifting team, and which also provides training for recreational weightlifters and athletes of other sports, and has published the monthly journal, The Performance Menu, for over ten years. In 2013, Everett released the first feature-length documentary film on the sport of weightlifting in the US, American Weightlifting, which he wrote, directed, produced, shot and edited on his own with no outside funding.

Major Upgrade From Previous Edition (A MUST Have For Coaches and Athletes)

This edition is a complete overhaul from the previous edition (2nd Edition, which I also have). There has been extensive content added to this edition and the design is MUCH better. The paperback version comes in at 588 pages and is now the "definitive textbook" for Olympic lifting for all athletes and coaches.

The lift progressions, program design, and supplemental information in this book is beyond description - it's simply outstanding and extremely detailed. I was already a huge fan of the 2nd edition, however, the 3rd edition is major upgrade and I love the overall design and flow of this book. You won't find the details of the O-lift progressions anywhere else. The Catalyst methodology is a wonderful system for learning and progressing with the Olympic lifts and the system is completely hashed out and explained in great detail in the book.

This is not a book to read, it's a book to apply. What I mean is that this is a book that belongs in the gyms for continuous reference and application to the sport of Olympic lifting. If you read only one book on OL, this could be the only book you'd ever need.

Greg Everett has consistently put out some of the best content and perspective on Olympic lifting and this book is a complete and comprehensive culmination of his work. With the growth of OL, this body of work is for everyone who's serious about their own training or becoming better as a OL coach.

I've been reading Greg's work for years now and this book is his best (and most comprehensive) work to date. The technique descriptions and progressions are easily worth the investment alone, but the book goes much deeper into all aspects of weightlifting. There is no stone left unturned and I can't imagine what further questions would be left unanswered after reading.

Wondering if you should get this book if you already have the previous edition?
The answer is absolutely YES!

I've already mentioned the reasons why: the book is a total re-design, a major upgrade, and a complete evolution to the previous edition. Things change, techniques improve, and new things are discovered. This book represents a much improved and enhanced version of "Olympic Weightlifting."

There's a reason the book is titled "A Complete Guide" because that's exactly what it is.

Kindle version is very good and user friendly

The Kindle version is fantastic. The table of contents is thorough so clicking on the topic you wish to read about takes you right to the page. The Kindle version is formatted neatly and the pictures are clear. I normally do not like buying books of this nature on Kindle, but I gave it a shot since I didn't want to lug around the huge book. I am happy I went this route and have already referenced it a lot.

Can you ask for more?

A must read if you want to improve your Olympic lifts in an exponential manner. Great resource for any crossfit participant. Now I understand more clearly the concepts my coach is trying to teach our class. The author has a website with instructional videos and articles covering a wide variety of topics for competitive lifters and he is on Facebook as well under Catalyst Athletics. His female lifting team just won the national championship so he definitely knows how to convey his knowledge and inspire his students. The book is quite large, about two and a half inches thick, and approximately six hundred pages, with a ton of photographs demonstrating proper form. Now I plan to to outfit my own home gym. My first purchase will be a good barbell and quality bumper plates. This book will reside right beside them. My thanks to the author for his inspirational work.

Lizabeth Roemer, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Drs. Useful resource for clients and therapists
