The best book on aerobatics, on a par with Stick and Rudder
By A Customer
Neil Williams was a British test pilot and aerobatic pilot with a rare gift of skill in both flying and writing. He was a World Champion of aerobatic competition. This book is the standard text on aerobatics, to be considered on a par with Langewiesche's Stick and Rudder and Robert Buck's Weather Flying. He writes with the authority and conciseness which can only come from absolute mastery of the subject, but also accomplishes conveying the finer points as well as the fundamentals of aerobatic flying to an inexperienced reader. It is also true that few accomplished aerobatic pilots can read this book without improving their knowledge in some way.
As well as the technical aspects of the technique of aerobatic flight, Williams also includes the human aspects, what it feels like, why pilots are drawn to it, giving an insight that non-pilots will enjoy.
The writing style is witty and interesting, with many anecdotes. It is not the kind of book that simply tells you push this and that will happen. If you understand this book, you will understand your airplane, regardless of its attitude.

Comprehensive book
By richy
A good book that goes into lots of detail about many Aerobatic maneuvers. I personally didn't find it that easy to read i.e. reading about a maneuver and then trying it out because there was so much complex detail in the text. Having said that it is the only book I have read so far about aerobatics so have not got anything to compare it to.

The new textbook go-to Vocal Pedagogy textbook for many years to come.
By Voice Teacher
I will be using this book for my Vocal Pedagogy class in the Spring. For many years I have been looking for a book that was the right combination of Vocal Science and classical pedagogy, yet at the same time was an accessible read for the college classroom. This is the book; indeed, I have the feeling that this will become the go-to Vocal Pedagogy textbook for many years to come. The book is one of the first to address the unique challenges of the modern Contemporary Commercial Music field, but there is also an extensive chapter on the history of classical Vocal Pedagogy. This book has it all; and don't forget to buy the workbook, as well, which is full of very useful exercises for the modern voice studio, indispensable for your students as they begin to teach.

By Kari Ragan
This book is a remarkable resource for any singer or voice teacher interested in learning more about the many important facets of the voice. It includes information on historical pedagogy all the way through to trends and physiological facts for the contemporary singer. This book covers it all and is an incredible resource. It is a great addition to any vocal pedagogy class at the collegiate level but also accessible for the avocational singer. I will be using it as additional reading for both my graduate and undergraduate voice pedagogy class. It should be required reading for any teacher of singing OR singer who wants to learn more about the mechanics of the voice. There is also a wealth of information about vocal health and vocal hygiene. Incredibly readable and a great resource.

Me llaman Artemio Furia /They call me Artemio Furi (Spanish Edition), by Florencia Bonelli

Artemio Furia is not your typical man. His name is mentioned with reverence and fear. Between 1806 and 1807, he served in Pueyrredón s armies to overthrow the Englishmen, and it is said that with a snap of his fingers he is capable of rising up a revolt. Buenos Aires, 1810: the May Revolution is brewing; the patriot faction invites Artemio to join them. As everyone knows, having Furia s backing can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

The Samurai: A Military History, by Stephen Turnbull

First published in 1977, The Samurai has long since become a standard work of reference. It continues to be the most authoritative work on samurai life and warfare published outside Japan. Set against the background of Japan's social and political history, the book records the rise and rise of Japan's extraordinary warrior class from earliest times to the culmination of their culture, prowess and skills as manifested in the last great battle they were ever to fight - that of Osaka Castle in 1615.

A fascinating and eye opening look into the feudal Japan
By Jason Radley
If you have ever had even a passing interest in the history of Japan from the perspective of the warrior class who played a major role in defining it, then this is probably the best choice of book on the subject. It approaches the topic from the earliest accounts of the samurai right though to the end of the samurai era, taking a fairly high level, "big picture" type view. The book looks more at the "why" something happened, than the "how" of events. This provides some fascinating insights into the history of Japan and allows the reader to grasp the overall history of feudal Japan with just the right balance of details and objectivity. That said, there is still quite a bit of detail of some of the more notable battles, but high level, campaign type information is not the purpose of this book. It is more interested in letting the reader understand what happened in Japanese history and why it unfolded as it did, with out bogging down in micro detail. The book is superbly researched and is very well written, and despite the fact that it is a "history" book, it is a very enjoyable, extremely informative read. It is thoroughly recommended.

Very Informative and Entertaining
By China Mike
Stephen Turnbull, in my opinion, is one of the foremost historians of Japanese military history, and certainly one of the most prolific. His writings are well researched and represent the various strata of the eras he writes. Starting with the early history of Japan and extending his writings through the Edo Period, events are written not only of the deeds of the samurai, but also of the political, religious, and cultural influences that helped form this unique class of warriors. Forces in society such as the Emperor, the establishment of Buddhism and later Christianity as a religion, and the numerous foreigners who entered Japan are all shown to have shaped them. Another aspect of this book which is very appealing is that where other historians will focus only upon the much broader aspects of Japanese history, Dr. Turnbull provides insight into the samurai culture by giving excerpts from chronicles of individual families within this warrior society, thereby stirring the imagination of his readers to a greater extent. This book is truly a great resource for understanding this fascinating military order.

Almost as good as the last...
By Kurt Bilinski
I already owned "High Speed, Low Cost" and "Race and Rally Car Source Book," both by Staniforth, so when I saw this latest book I was excited. Both are really good, with the latter being very, very useful for designing your own race/sports car suspension.

Let me preface this with saying I'm interested specifically in chassis/suspension design so my comments are limited to that portion of the book. (Of course, since the title is about suspension disign, that's pretty much the whole book.)

After reading his latest book, I felt let down by the lack of new information. I guess there's only so much to automotive suspension design, yet assumed the new book would have "new" information, necessitating it's publication; I just don't see it.

My advice: If you don't have any of his books, then get this one. It's very good and includes everything from his previous works. But if you already have "Race and Rally Car Source Book," don't bother.

Thorough yet not too detailed
By Brian Barnett
He has hit the nail on the head with this book. Well organized, logical progression and interesting. The pictures were in the right places at the right times and supplimented the text beautifully. The program and detailed formulas in the latter portions of the book were right on and helped immensely in calculating needed suspension geometries. I folded them into Excel and fiddled with the numbers to better understand the finer points of changes to suspension and handling.
By the time you have completed this book, you will have a true understanding of all aspects of a well designed and implemented suspension system. Well done and highly recommended.

Follow the road
By David Veitch
Well written text that explains the engineering behind suspension choices without getting bogged down in the math. Inciteful and well illustrated with historical references on every type of suspension used and the component parts.

A Quick Review of Powerful Principles
By A Customer
I found this little book a delightful read, and skimmed through it in an afternoon. Dr Rubino covers many of the fundamental principles common to most "self-help" and motivational books, often with a creative twist. At the same time, he moves through the chapters so quickly and briefly, that there is very little substance here. The typical chapter is about 3 pages long, including a brief quote, a statement of the principle being covered, and then a page or so of the author's personal notes and commentary. A strong point of the book is that each chapter includes an action section with several questions designed to help the reader take immediate action in their own lives. Two weaknesses of the book are that Dr Rubino extensively uses language unique to the personal development "movement", and the book seems designed to promote both his own books, and the programs of his partners, with numerous references throughout the book and in the endnotes.
Over-all, a pleasant book, with many positive reminders to take personal responsibility for my life and use the resources available to me, but not a very meaty book, and certainly not a profound one.

The most complete personal development book ever
By Harvey Walfish
This book is the most complete book from A to Z covering the topic of personal development. Dr. Rubino explains the different steps in a detailed, yet simple process. It gets you thinking about who you are and who you want to become through"change". His use of quotations of many famous people through the years, share with you that personal development has been around for many years and that it is highly under utilized. In todays society where its use is becoming more prevalent, Dr. Rubino's book is an easy to read text. If one is up to it, and I highly recommend this, one should do all of the suggested exercises at the end of the chapters. If you're into personal development and "change" then this is the book for you.

The Power to Succeed
By Don & Mary Lou Vollmer
This book is filled with life enhancing ~ contents ~ growth experiences ~ developmental chapters. These meaningful chapters can be utilized in incremental stages. The way we utilize the book is to read it all first in its entirety. Then taking a principle one at a time and utilizing the information on how you can enhance your life as well as those around you, we use and practice one principle a week with a small focus group. You can gain immeasurably by putting into practice the principles, while increasing the effectiveness of the group. This book has been a tremendous growth experience for us, and we would highly recommend it for anyone truly interested in self improvement.

Hitch 22: A Memoir, by Christopher Hitchens

#1 New York Times bestselling author and finalist for the National Book Award — one of the most admired and controversial public intellectuals of our time — shares his personal life story.

Most who have observed Christopher Hitchens over the years would agree that he possesses a ferocious intellect and is unafraid to tackle the most contentious subjects. Now 60, English-born and American by adoption; all atheist and partly Jewish; bohemian (even listing "drinking" along with "disputation" as "hobbies" in Who's Who), he has held to a consistent thread of principle whether opposing war in Vietnam or supporting intervention in Iraq. As a foreign correspondent in some of the world's nastiest places, a lecturer and teacher and an esteemed literary critic, Hitchens manifests a style that is at once ironic, witty, and tough-minded. A legendary bon vivant with an unquenchable thirst for literature, he has sometimes ridiculed those who claim that the personal is political, though he has often seemed to illustrate that very idea. Readers will find that his own many opposites attract, as do his many sketches of friendship and ex-friendship, from Martin Amis to Noam Chomsky. Condemned to be able to see both sides of any argument, Christopher Hitchens has contradictions that contain their own multitudes.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Christopher Hitchens stands alone among 20th- and 21st-century pundits for his enthusiastic enmity and political flip-flopping, but while he makes no apologies for his beliefs, he does acknowledge their intrinsic contradictions. Critics praised Hitchens's frankness in sharing the details of his mother's suicide and of his breezy bisexuality, but they simultaneously balked at his decision to omit significant people and events (i.e., his wives, his children, and his role in Bill Clinton's impeachment). They also objected to his relentless name-dropping and some overly dense prose, and a few were appalled that Hitchens would continue to insist that Saddam Hussein did indeed possess WMDs. Despite these complaints, Hitch-22 is a sharp, rebellious, and sometimes bawdy account of the making of a modern mastermind.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Hitchens, who, in his earlier books, has expressed contempt for both God and Mother Teresa (although not in that order), is often described as a contrarian. In fact, in his book Letters to a Young Contrarian (2001), he himself noted that he “can appear insufferable and annoying,” albeit without intending to. This memoir, bracing, droll, and very revealing, gives him yet another description: storyteller. He writes with a voice you can hear clearly, warmed by smoke and whiskey, and draws readers into his story, which proves as personal as it is political. As with many memoirs, it is not the public moments that are so fascinating, though there are plenty of those. Hitchens takes readers with him to Havana and Prague, Afghanistan and Iraq; tests himself by being waterboarded (he was disappointed in his early capitulation); and hobnobs with politicians and poets. He almost gets himself beaten up by defacing a poster in Iraq with a Hitler mustache. But the most intriguing stories are the personal ones, both from his early days, at home and at boarding school, and from his later life, when he learns that his mother was Jewish, which, if only technically, makes him Jewish as well. This revelation leads Hitchens on a quest to learn the story of his family, many of whom died in the Holocaust. How this new identity squares with his oft-proclaimed atheism sheds a different light on the meaning of religious identity. (He struggles mightily with his political identity as well.) Few authors can rile as easily as Hitchens does, but even his detractors might find it difficult to put down a book so witty, so piercing, so spoiling for a fight. He makes you want to be as good a reader as he is a writer. --Ilene Cooper

Review
"[Hitch-22] is a memoir that should be given to high school and college students of a literary bent. In the age of the Internet and the academy, it will open up different models for how to be a thoughtful person, how to engage in political life and what sort of things one should know in order to be truly educated." The New York Times

"As contemptuous, digressive, righteous, and riotously funny as the rest of the author's incessant output, this memoir is an effective coming-of-age story, regardless of what one may think of the resulting adult...Hitchens paints a credible and even affecting self-portrait." The New Yorker

"In this frank, often wickedly funny account, Hitchens traces his evolution as a fiercely independent thinker and enemy of people who are convinced of their absolute certainty.... Revealing and riveting." (Kirkus Review)

"Few writers can match his cerebral pyrotechnics. Fewer still can emulate his punch as an intellectual character assassin. It is hard not to admire the sheer virtuosity of his prose.... With Hitchens one simply goes along for the ride. The destination hardly matters." The Financial Times

"A fat and juicy memoir of a fat and juicy life." The Washington Post

"With the possible exception of Tom Wolfe and Maureen Dowd's, Christopher Hitchens' marvelous byline is the most archly kinetic in current-day American letters. Every article, review and essay has the romantic whiff of a durable vintage. You might disagree with him. You might question his motives. But not for a second will you ever be bored." The Los Angeles Times

"Perhaps the finest living essayist in the English language"
By Douglas K. Pinner
High praise indeed from none other than Christopher Buckley but an accolade well warranted.Wit,intelligence, honesty,a master of the appropriate obscure word or phrase, also a partisan polemicist of the far left, atheist, outrageously anti religious, but surprisingly non doctrinaire,in short a complex and fascinating mind.Full disclosure... I am totally on the other end of the political, cultural, and metaphysical spectrum and my life encompassed the same period and yet have always been an admirer even when outraged at his positions in that they are always reasoned from his own integrity ,much as I admire Camille Paglia on a likewise ambivalent basis. In reading some of the negative reviews the term 'name dropper' was cast. Well what is a memoir but a compilation of one man's trials, victories and the cast of characters that formed his life. And what a cast it was.And what a period of national and international upheaval.Ironically and sadly publication of his bio coincided with the news of his probably terminal cancer.True to character, that too is grist for the mill of this clear eyed mordant thinker as he describes that last journey beginning with his first essay "Topic of Cancer" .Read this only if you can be open to a mind with contradictory facets but one totally engaged with life and events and an unmatched command of the languge.A fun and fascinating read from an impressive mind .

Yours fraternally...

Christopher Hitchens used to emphasize his love of irony. Reading through the new preface, which was written after his cancer diagnosis, it all feels ironic -- but perhaps a better fitting word is tragic.

The book’s initial pages reflect a powerful introspection regarding death, dying, and the glee of mortality -- even before his diagnosis. It’s clear that Hitchens simply wanted to pack as many years into whatever life he had. With that goal in mind, it seems he succeeded.

His prose offers a glimpse into a genius writer. I’m not sure I’ve ever read more eloquent words. Hitchens’ memoir shows a grace for others, contempt for banality, and a self-effacing eloquence. At times, the memoir reads like a collection of markers, keystones, and memorials. His name dropping is sort of frustrating, as a young reader/writer -- unexposed to this culture. But it also provides inspiration for further reading. The network and milieu that Hitchens built was legendary; it included everyone from Ian McEwan to Salman Rushdie to Martin Amis.

Christopher appears to acknowledge much of his upbringing, and the inherent class that Yvonne (his mother) insisted on the family. From his preference for a full name “Christopher” -- not “Chris” -- to the formality in speech, class was a resounding focal point in his development.

There were two points of contention for me. First, Hitchens barely mentioned his intimate relationships or children. It’s unclear to me how such a great writer could unconsciously pass this up. This leads me to believe the Hitchens consciously avoided the topic of his descendants and relationships. Why? One can only imagine now. Second, Hitchens embraced America as the "land of opportunity" and emigrated from the United Kingdom. While he talks about the issues of immigration to America, with a nod to those less fortunate, I found that he was rather absent on the acknowledgement of powerful economic inequalities and racial tensions that are very present in the U.S.

Those tidbits aside, this is a masterpiece. I miss Hitchens’ writing dearly, and will certainly return to this memoir at a later date.

A Former Trotskyite Reflects on his Life in America and around the World
By Ted Marks
Christopher Hitchens, once the "enfant terrible" of the international hard left, has written a memorable memoir, HITCH-22, that is at once pretentious, bombastic, self indulgent, sometimes petulant -- and often brilliant. Much in Hitchens' book is laugh out loud funny as he takes one pot shot after another at his old political allies and enemies. And for someone with Hitchens' wit and writing facility, taking down his enemies with the written word is like shooting the proverbial fish in a barrel.

On a more serious note, Hitchens explains how he transformed himself from a London-based Trotskyite commentator into an American immigrant who defends of the allied invasion of Iraq. In fact, Hitchens presents us with a quite sensible defense of George W. Bush's war on terror in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is not an easy book to read, mainly because Hitchens writes in a style that makes clever use of inverted grammer and five and six syllable words as he reaches into his psyche to explain himself. Morever, his views are strongly held, and he doesn't suffer fools with any sympathy for their alleged pigheadedness. On the other hand, this book is a very good read for those who are trying to cope in a world that seems to be spiraling out of control.

Hitchens opens his memoir with a short family history - which may explain a lot about his cynical view of the world. His father was a quite common British Navy officer, while his mother was an immigrant Jew with Polish/Germanic blood. His mother ultimately meets s a tragic fate, while his father lives out his routine life without a clue to the torment of his wife or the intellectual pretensions of his son.

Hitchens was educated at Oxford, where he is exposed to the leftist tendencies of that venerable institution, and he became a self-proclaimed Trotskyite member of the communist party. In his early days, the Vietnam War was the focus of his activism, and he joined the anti-war movement that denigrated capitalistic America. But his intellectual curiosity was too restless for the static Marxist view of the world, and as he witnesses events in eastern Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, he begins to develop empathy for the free enterprise system that empowers America.

The turning point for Hitchens came on Sept. 11, 2001. The terrorist attacks on lower Manhattan and the Pentagon, costing some 3,000 lives (most of them American) was a revelation for Hitchens. "Before the close of that day, I had deliberately violated the rule that one ought not to let the sun set on one's anger, and had sworn a sort of oath to remain coldly furious until these hateful forces had been brought to a most strict and merciless account."

So Hitchens began to write about the hatefulness of the Islamist jihadists, defending America against those who felt "the chickens had come home to roost."

`I did not intend to be told, I said, that the people of the United States - who included all those toiling in the Pentagon as well as all those, citizens and non-citizens, who had been immolated in Manhattan - had in any sense deserved this or brought it upon themselves," Hitchens writes. "I also tried to give a name to the mirthless, medieval, death-obsessed barbarism that had so brazenly unmasked itself. It was, I said, 'Fascism with an Islamic Face'."

When he decides to become an American, he studies diligently for the citizenship test and passes, of course, with flying colors (Hitchens is a serious student of American history as evidenced by his book, "Thomas Jefferson: Author of America"). By that time he had become an ardent supporter of the incursion into Iraq and he was sworn in at the Jefferson Memorial by Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff (talk about clout).

His fondness for America, however, does not extend to American presidents and other national leaders: Lyndon Johnson ("hideous); Richard Nixon ("running a parallel regime of bagmen and wiretappers behind the façade of a legitimate government); Jimmy Carter ("..pious, born again creep); Ronald Reagan ("the carapace of geniality proved to be flaky...the look of senile, shifty malice); George H.W. Bush ("I simply detested the way in which he lied his way as Vice President through the Iran-contra scandal.."); Bill Clinton ("habitual and professional liar"); Curiously, George W. Bush escapes the Hitchen scorn. In an earlier volume ("The Trial of Henry Kissinger," published in 2001) Hitchens developed a full-scale criminal indictment of Henry Kissinger (whom Hitchens describes as"indescribably loathsome" in his memoir) for his conduct of American foreign policy.

In the final chapters of his book, Hitchens shifts the focus to himself. He comes across as a gadfly, of course, but also a wary, skeptical (sometimes cynical) observer of our times whose professional objectives include intense scrutiny of all that is evil in our world.

In an effort to explain himself further, Hitchens fashions for himself a Proustian survey in which his answers are supposed to give us insight into his persona. What we get is a portrait of a conflicted intellectual who takes pride in his knowledge and experiences, but whose most "marked characteristic" is insecurity. He most dislikes stupidity, according to his self-imposed questionnaire, and he most admires both moral and physical courage. His favorite virtue is an appreciation for irony.

It was with a sense of irony then, when Hitchens was approaching 50 years of age, that his younger brother, Peter, discovers that their mother was Jewish, raising the intriguing possibility that they both are Jewish. A self-proclaimed atheist (see his book, "god is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything"), Hitchens considers, but rejects the prospect of his Jewishness. In doing so, he reveals his contempt for Zionist Israel and its occupation of Palestinian lands. But his awareness of his Jewishness increases his sympathy for the suffering of the "children of Israel" as they seek a homeland. His confliction over his roots thus gives him valuable insights to the current Middle East stalemate between Israeli Zionists and Islam jihadists. Hitchens is clearly sympathetic to the Palestinian movement, but he also thinks that the Jewish people have a right to seek their own identity, preferably somewhere else than on Palestinian soil.

Hitchens illuminates his agony over this dilemma by describing the deterioration of his relationship with his good friend Edward Said, a Palestinian intellectual. Hitchens and Said initially developed a very close relationship, but after Sept. 11, 2001, according to Hitchens, Said started writing anti-American essays and articles, and their relationship started to cool. The relationship was effectively destroyed when Said quoted, without attribution, commentary by Hitchens that he (Said) said was "racist." There could be no greater insult to Hitchens than to be called a racist. He never spoke to Said again.

HITCH-22 is a very good memoir -- it is topical, penetrating, amusing and revealing -- one that is well worth the time and effort to read. The memoir offers an insightful look into the mindset of one of our era's most astute social and political critics.

Postscript: shortly after his memoir was published in the spring of 2010, Hitchens was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus that had metastasized into his lung and lymph nodes. He underwent chemotherapy and wrote in the September issue of Vanity Fair: "I am quietly resolved to resist bodily as best I can..."

A Baxter Family Christmas

CHAPTER ONE
Heavy snow clouds hung low over Bloomington, Indiana, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. But the atmosphere was warm and bright in the Clear Creek High School gym, where Ashley Baxter Blake sat next to her husband, Landon. On the floor with the ball was her fifteen-year-old son, Cole, whose freshman team was minutes from beating its crosstown rival.

The high-pitched sound of a whistle pierced the gymnasium. “Traveling!” The ref called Cole for the violation and instantly Ashley was on her feet. “Are you se—” She eased herself back down to the bleacher and bit the inside of her lip. Gradually she brought her hands together and clapped. “Here we go. You got this, Cole.”

Four-year-old Janessa scrambled up onto Ashley’s lap. “Cole’s the best basketball boy in the world, right, Mommy?”

“Yes, baby.” Ashley kissed her cheek. “And the refs are just human.” She met Landon’s eyes over Janessa’s head and managed a smile. She mouthed her next words to him. I’m trying.

Landon chuckled. “You’ve come a long way.”

It was true. Cole was just a little guy when he first started playing basketball here. Part of the park league program. On his first game, Ashley had caught herself getting too enthusiastic, yelling a bit too loud. And yes, maybe a bit too concerned with questionable calls by the referees. Her attitude wasn’t that surprising. Lately she’d been frustrated with her father and snapping at everyone.

Ashley drew a slow breath. She still cared about the calls and the scoreboard. But she’d learned a lot. Winning and losing meant nothing compared to the thrill of enjoying the game.

Cole played basketball because he loved it. Today. For now. If he scored twenty points and his team won, great. But the joy Ashley felt watching her son play had nothing to do with his points scored or an official’s call or whether Cole played next season. Let alone whether he played college ball one day.

Even living here in the shadow of Bloomington’s Indiana University.

Amy, ten, and Devin, eight, sat on the other side of Landon. Devin tugged Landon’s sleeve. “That wasn’t traveling, right, Dad?”

Landon smiled. “If the ref says it’s traveling . . .”

“Oh! I know!” Amy’s eyes lit up. “If the ref says it’s traveling, it’s traveling!” She came up behind Landon and looped her arms around his neck. “Right?”

“Right.” Landon grinned at Ashley and then he winked at Devin. “You have to play ten points above the refs. Just in case.”

Thanksgiving was less than a week away, but Ashley Baxter Blake’s mind was on Christmas, and the dinner her dad was trying to pull together. Which was the reason she felt so irritated.

By halftime Cole’s team was up six points. The kids were hoping for the first snow of the season, so Landon agreed to take them outside to check. Ashley stood to follow but her phone rang. Her dad’s name appeared on the screen. She motioned for Landon to go on without her. Then she took the call.

“Hey, Dad.” She sat down again and tried to sound pleasant. “How are you?”

“Good. Beautiful day. It’s already snowing here.”

Ashley pictured it, the way fresh snow looked across Bloomington. The whole town would turn into a Norman Rockwell painting, the way it did every year at this time. “Amy and Devin will be thrilled.”

“You kids always were when you were little!” Her dad laughed. “Of course, we always needed a big box by the front door for coats and mittens and boots. But that never stopped us!”

Ashley smiled at the memory. It seemed like yesterday when she and her siblings were the little ones, clamoring to get outside and play in the first snow. Now all of them were married with kids of their own.

Her dad paused for a moment, and Ashley could feel his tone change before he said a word. “Ashley, I think you know why I called . . .”

She closed her eyes. I’m not ready for this, God. Help me. Please . . .

“You and Landon.” Her father sighed. “You haven’t given me an answer about Christmas Eve. About dinner with Kendra Bryant and her husband.”

Anxiety left an instant wake across the already troubled waters of Ashley’s heart. She blinked a few times and stared at the small cross on the wall just above the side entrance to the gym. “I’m not trying to be difficult, Dad.”

“I know.” His tone was kind. “And I don’t want to force your decision. It’s just . . . I’d like a plan.”

Thanksgiving was still days away, but her father had been talking about Christmas Eve since the beginning of November. Ashley and her siblings disagreed about how to handle their dad’s request. But Ashley was easily the most concerned about the idea. “Landon and I talked. We don’t think a family meeting with Kendra on Christmas Eve is a good idea. Maybe not ever.”

Silence followed before her dad finally spoke. “I understand.”

“You can still use our house. Landon and the kids and I will have dinner with his parents.” Ashley tried to sound upbeat. But her effort didn’t seem to be working. “I don’t want to get in the way of your plans. But on Christmas Eve? I’m not sure how Amy would handle that.”

“I like the idea of Christmas Eve. Because everyone will be together.” Her dad sounded like he was struggling with the idea, also. At least a little. “I keep asking myself what would Erin want us to do?”

The mention of her sister made Ashley catch her breath. For a long moment she didn’t speak. She closed her eyes again. Erin should be here, God. We shouldn’t even be having this conversation.

“Ashley?”

“I’m sorry.” She exhaled slowly. “What would I say to her?” What would any of them say? She spotted Landon and the kids entering the gym again, headed toward her. “Can I call you tonight? I’m at Cole’s game. Halftime’s almost over.”

Her dad hesitated, but only slightly. “Sure.” He paused. “Tell Cole I’m sorry I wasn’t there. I had a few things to do around the house this morning. Next time, okay?”

“Of course.” Ashley smiled. Her dad usually attended every game. Today, though, she was almost glad he wasn’t here. She couldn’t spend the hour talking about Christmas Eve and meeting the stranger with Erin’s heart. It was all too sad.

Cole’s team won the game and they drove home to play in the snow. Once the kids were outside, Ashley and Landon stood near the window. “I don’t have peace about it. I don’t think it’s good for Amy to meet this Kendra woman.”

“Honey.” He turned to face her. “You’re clearly uncomfortable with this.” Landon hugged her and searched her eyes. “So we skip the Christmas Eve dinner this year. We’ll still see each other the next day.”

Ashley looked long at her husband. She loved him so much. “Thank you. For understanding.”

“Always.” He shifted gears, grinned and motioned to the snow out front. “Let’s go show the kids how to build a real snowman.”

Ashley didn’t call her father back until later that night when the kids were in bed. “Like I said earlier, Dad. Landon and I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Okay.” He was quicker to respond this time. “I understand. Really.” He paused. “If you change your mind, just let me know.”

His statement frustrated her. “Meaning . . . you hope we’ll still join you?”

“Sure. Yes, that’s what I’d like.”

“But Dad . . .” Ashley paced across her bedroom floor. “I just got done telling you we won’t be there.” Nothing about this was easy.

“Just pray about it, okay? Can you do that for me?”

Ashley was near tears by the time she hung up. Her dad had never raised his voice, but he seemed unwilling to accept her decision.

After the call she found Landon in the kitchen washing the counters. “I talked to my dad.”

He looked over his shoulder, his handsome face suddenly concerned. “He still wants us to be there?”

“Yes.” Did she look as weary as she felt? She waited while he dried his hands and the two of them took seats opposite each other at the kitchen table.

Landon searched her face. “Tell me, Ash.”

She nodded and her eyes found a spot on the table. “He wasn’t angry or anything. But he wants us there.” She looked up at him. “He asked us to pray about it.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Yeah.” Tears filled Ashley’s eyes. “I mean . . . of course we can pray. But think about how hard it would be.”

“We don’t have to be here.” Landon covered her hand with his. “You can stick to your decision.”

Ashley stood, paced to the sink, and turned again to face him. “Doesn’t my dad get it? We’re talking about Christmas!” She kept her voice low so she wouldn’t wake the kids. But her tone was strained all the same. “Okay, so the woman has Erin’s heart. She doesn’t believe in God and she needs hope and direction. Her marriage is in trouble.” Ashley walked from one side of the kitchen to the other. “I get all that. But why is that our job? Couldn’t we pray for her? Call a church in her area and try to get her connected?”

Landon shifted in his chair.

“I mean, there we’ll all be. Standing around making small talk with this . . . this stranger. And the whole time she’s only alive because Erin died. How are we supposed to have a beautiful Christmas Eve with all of that going on?”

“I hear you.” Landon didn’t look away, didn’t argue with her. “Your dad means well. I believe that.”

Ashley tossed her hands in the air and paced back to the sink. “That’s the hardest part. Of course he means well. He always means well. He loves everybody.”

A smile tugged at Landon’s lips. “No matter how far gone they are.”

The fight left Ashley and she felt her shoulders drop a bit. “Even me. Back in the day.”

Landon gave a light shrug. “Just saying.”

“Deep down you’re not really on his side, though, right?” Tears blurred her eyes again. “Landon, really? On Christmas Eve?”

“I’m on your side, baby.” He stood and came to her. “But I guess it’s possible . . . Christmas Eve could change the woman.”

A sigh slid from Ashley’s heart through her lips. “That’s what my dad says.” She came to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. “I just can’t imagine it. Like what if I can’t stop crying?” She pressed her head against his chest. “And what about Amy? How is she supposed to deal with that? Her mother’s heart beating in the chest of a stranger? Right there in the middle of our Christmas celebration?”

“I get that.” He eased back and looked into her eyes. “Maybe we should—” He seemed to notice something as he looked toward the doorway. “Amy. Honey, why are you out of bed?”

“You’re talking loud.” She wore a red flannel nightgown and rubbed her eyes, the light from the kitchen clearly too bright for her.

“Oh, honey.” Ashley felt a rush of remorse. “I’m so sorry.” She shared a quick glance with Landon. “Come on. I’ll walk you back to your room. Me and Uncle Landon will be quieter. I promise.”

Fifteen minutes later she returned to the kitchen. Landon was cleaning again, this time drying the stovetop. He set the towel down and turned to Ashley. “Think she heard us?”

“I asked her.” Ashley put her face in her hands for a few seconds and then looked at Landon again. “She said no.”

“She must’ve heard some of it.”

“I think so.” Ashley took his hands. “I thought about talking to her, asking her about it, but even that could be devastating.”

“True.”

Ashley saw the compassion in Landon’s eyes. He loved all their children so much. And he treated Amy like one of his own. Ashley kept her voice low. “She’s had to live with so much loss.”

“Just like you.” Landon pulled her gently into his arms. “Like all of us.”

She searched his eyes. “But you don’t think anything good could come from meeting with the woman, do you? For Amy?” She paused. “We’re the ones raising her. We should know what’s best for her, don’t you think?”

“I’m not sure.” His words came slowly, his eyes shining with love for her. “Could there be some comfort in it? Knowing that her mother’s heart saved the life of someone else?”

The idea hadn’t really occurred to Ashley. She let her forehead lean against his. “I can’t see that happening. It would be so sad.”

“Well . . .” Landon eased back so he could see her again. “We don’t have to decide now. Christmas is still a month away.”

Ashley nodded. She looked deep into his eyes, all the way to his beautiful heart. “Thank you. For listening to me.”

“It’s a lot.” He brushed his thumb along her cheek. “Wanna pray?”

Her vision blurred with tears. She felt weary, afraid. “Yes. Please.” She closed her eyes, but her fear and frustration only increased. The last few years had brought a gradual healing after the loss of Erin. Meeting Kendra would take her back to that terrible day in the emergency room, the day they found out about the accident.

Landon prayed out loud, asking God to give them wisdom and clarity about the possible meeting. He also asked that Ashley might have peace, whatever they decided, and that her father might think hard about the situation. When he was done praying, Landon ran his hands over her dark, shoulder-length hair. “Has anyone ever told you?” He grinned.

The heaviness in her soul lifted. She knew what was coming.

Landon raised his brow, his eyes sparkling. “You have the most beautiful hair.”

She giggled. “Thank you, sir.”

He moved in closer and kissed her. The sort of kiss that still took her breath away. “Now . . . how about we get some sleep?” He kissed her again. “God will make the answers clear.”

“Mmm.” Ashley kissed him this time. “You’re a good kisser.”

“You, too.” Landon took her by the hand and led her toward the stairs and their bedroom on the second floor.

Ashley would be thankful every day for Landon Blake. The man he’d always been. It was hard to believe she had almost walked away from him all those years ago. Back when she was angry at God and not sure of her place in her family.

As she climbed the stairs, Ashley remembered it all again.

She was the third daughter of John and Elizabeth Baxter. One of six kids, all grown up now. All married with kids. Her parents had seen her through those difficult years. When she’d come home from Paris alone and pregnant and rebellious.

But it was Landon Blake who had given his life for her and Cole. He loved Ashley’s son like the boy was his own. Ashley’s mother grew sick with cancer, but she lived long enough to see Ashley and Landon marry. They’d had three kids since then. One who only lived a few hours before joining her grandmother in heaven.

Then came the car accident. Ashley’s dear youngest sister, Erin, and her husband, Sam Hogan, and three of their daughters all killed that terrible day. Only their daughter Amy had lived. Raising her now was something else Landon took on as easily as he breathed.

That was the kind of man Landon was.

They reached their bedroom door. It was a miracle any of her family had made it through the heartache of that time. Erin’s organs had gone to several recipients. And her heart had gone to Kendra Bryant. An atheist.

The woman her father had invited to join them for Christmas Eve dinner.

“Hey.” Landon turned and put his arms around her neck. “You’re thinking about it again.”

She smiled. “How come you know me so well?”

“Because.” He kissed her. “When you’re sad . . . my heart hurts.” He smiled. “It’s always been that way.”

“I love you.” Ashley rested her head on his chest. She didn’t know what she had done to deserve a man like Landon Blake. But she knew this much. No family could be expected to meet a woman whose heart once belonged to one of their own. Especially on Christmas Eve.

Not even the Baxter family.

Amy Hogan couldn’t sleep. She lay in bed in her dark room and stared at the moon just outside her window. You’re here, God. I know it. Right beside me. She waited a minute in case God wanted to say something. But Amy didn’t hear any actual words.

Okay, God . . . so I heard everything they said. Now what am I supposed to do about it?

She rolled onto her side and tucked her hand under her pillow. Aunt Ashley didn’t want to meet the woman. She thought it would be too sad.

But it was all Amy could think about.

What kind of a person was this stranger? What did she look like? Aunt Ashley said the woman was only alive because Amy’s mommy died. You must have really special plans for her, right, God? Because she got to live and my mommy didn’t.

Tears came. Amy couldn’t stop them.

She didn’t talk about her mom that much anymore. She loved Aunt Ashley and Uncle Landon. She felt like part of the family here. But every night before she fell asleep she did the same thing. She looked out the window, up toward heaven, and asked God to do something for her.

Tonight, though, she wasn’t ready to do that yet.

Her thoughts were so loud she didn’t want to sleep. What would it be like? Would the woman look like her mommy? Would she sound like her? Since she had her mommy’s heart?

Amy wiped her tears with the sleeve of her nightgown.

Then a picture came to her mind of what it might be like.

It would be Christmas Eve and the woman would walk into the house. She would look like her mommy and sound like her. And Amy would run up and hug her and put her head against the woman and then . . . for the first time in such a long time, Amy would hear her mother’s heartbeat. The way she used to hear it when her mommy would hug her and read to her and sing with her.

That would be really nice. Amy thought about that for a long time and her tears stopped. She rolled onto her back again and closed her eyes.

It’s time, God. Like every night. Can you please tell my mommy and daddy and sisters that I love them. And I miss them. Amy waited. One more thing, God. Please can you ask my mommy if I should meet this woman who has her heart? Okay. That’s all. Thank you, God.

With that, Amy yawned and a few minutes later she fell asleep.

But this time her dreams weren’t about school or her cousins or her aunt and uncle. They were about a woman she had never met. A woman who looked and sounded like her mommy. And whose hug made Amy feel—if just for a little while—that her mommy was right here with her again.

A Baxter Family Christmas
By Jennifer @ Bookish Devices
Two years have passed since the car accident that took the lives of Sam and Erin Baxter Hogan and three of their four daughters. Erin’s father, John Baxter has invited a stranger for Christmas Eve dinner—Kendra Bryant, the recipient of Erin’s heart. The family is divided about meeting Kendra and some say they’ll miss Christmas so they don’t have to meet her. At the same time, Maddie West, daughter of Brooke Baxter West, is praying for meaning this Christmas.

I’m going to write this review to two different groups of readers.

1 - Readers who have read all of the Baxter books before and
2 - Readers who are being introduced to the Baxter family for the first time.

Group 1, you're up first. I’m a member of this group since I’ve read all 23 books that precede this one. What bothered me about this book were actions taken by some of the characters that I found unbelievable. These actions didn’t make the Baxters feel like the characters that I’ve grown to love. Then there were details and portions of the storyline that didn’t match up with previous books. I don’t want to say much more than that for fear of spoilers but as a reader of the Baxter books I was a little disappointed about these elements of the story. It hurts me to say but this book was a 3-star read because of the above-mentioned. If it wasn't for Erin’s surviving daughter, Amy it would have remained a 3-star book. However, each time Amy was involved I sniffled my way through that scene. Her heartbreak became my heartbreak. Amy and the emotions I felt for her made this book for me. Karen always manages to pull at my heart-strings and she did that with Amy. I also enjoyed seeing Maddie at age 18. Group 1, you'll remember Maddie and what happened to her sister, Hayley. At the time of the incident it wasn't explored how Maddie felt back then. I liked seeing Maddie now trying to deal with the trauma of that event. In conclusion Group 1, look for something special at the end of the book. I believe lovers of the Baxters will enjoy it.

Group 2, you’re next. The things I mentioned above probably won’t bother you because you won’t have the in-depth background Group 1 has with the Baxter family. I think you’ll enjoy this read and want to go back and read the previous books, which I highly recommend you do. But don’t worry! You can absolutely read this book without reading the others. A Baxter Family Christmas begins with an introduction to the family … Who is who, how old they are, who their kids are etc. You’ll simply want to read the rest of the books to fill in the greater details of storylines mentioned here.

In the end reader friends, this is a really quick read (less than 2 hours total reading time according to my Kindle). It's a good way to pass an afternoon snuggled up in your favorite reading spot. While there were instances when I wanted more, ultimately I believe old fans of the Baxters or new will enjoy this book.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley.

Baxter Family Christmas
By Jill A. Elyea
Very well written and once again Karen captures the true meaning of Christmas, giving! God sent His don in the form of a baby for our ultimate redemption, this was love! The Baxter Family extended love to the heart recipient by sharing their Christmas Eve time as a family. They displayed Christ's love in a unique way. Connor helped Maddie to see she was carrying unnecessary guilt and missing God's miracles on behalf of her sister. I'm so happy Karen is bringing back the Baxter Family. I have missed them!
