Br. Loughlan Sofield, S.T., a member of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, is senior editor of Human Development magazine. He has taught and presented in over three hundred dioceses on six continents. Sofield has written several award-winning books on collaboration, community, and forgiveness, including Facing Forgiveness.

Carroll Juliano, S.H.C.J., is a member of the Leadership Team of the American Province of the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus. She is the coauthor of Collaboration, Building Community, and Facing Forgiveness.

Completely Helpful for Christian Leaders

When writing Principled Ministry, Brother Sofield and Sister Juliano targeted readers interested in becoming more competent and compassionate Christian leaders. Two "umbrella principles" encompass all of the 30 leadership principles elaborated in Principled Ministry: "Leaders must be people of vision" and "leaders must have a passionate and energizing commitment to that vision." The authors have incorporated elements of psychology, systems theory, Biblical spirituality and their professional experience to develop practical applications for ministry leaders.

These principles range from the simple to the complex. The authors categorize the principles under the sections "The Self-Defined Leader," "The Discerning Leader," "Tasks, Functions, Roles and Skills," and "The Leader as Change Agent." Readers will find all of the topics relevant and the authors as seasoned professionals in the areas they discuss. For each area of leadership, the authors follow a pattern of definition and elaboration using examples and illustrations. They also provide a section for each principle on negative and positive true examples along with questions for reflection.

The authors emphasize the goal of Christian leaders to be faithful and continually striving to grow and do their best as leaders. The book has in mind leaders functioning in the Body of Christ and pursuing personal spiritual growth and the spiritual growth of their followers. These principles are congruent with what the Bible reveals as kingdom of God principles. I think the authors could have taken the liberty to expand more on some of the principles; however, they keep each topic to a few pages and make the book accessible and helpful for all readers - lay and ordained, Roman Catholic and Protestant.

This book introduces the reader to the system of energy - nadi & chakra - in our body as described in the ancient Indian tantric scriptures. Each major chakra in our body/mind system is described in detail, including the powers of the chakra and accompamying sounds (beeja mantra) to harmonise the chakra. By following these, the reader can start working on their chakras and improve their wellbeing.
The author's accompanying audio tape is very useful to learn to pronounce the Chakra hormonising sounds (beeja mantra) correctly, which is very important.
I found this book and the audio tape a useful and a simple guide to meditate (reciting beeja mantra)on the chakras without undergoing hardship.

A Modern Classic on Kundalini Yoga, But Not For Beginners

This book is a classic on the chakras, and specifically on the breath (pranayama) and meditation techniques employed within kundalini yoga and tantric traditions as part of the enlightenment/awakening process. In addition to being a writer and teacher of these subjects, the author Harish Johari was also a well-known Indian artist, and his depictions of the yantras and deities associated with each chakra within the tradition he is presenting are included in this updated edition (and are lovely - breathtaking in their detail.)

This book is really a detailed manual for practicing the pranayama and meditation techniques of kundalini yoga/tantra (or specifically, the techniques of this particular branch of kundalini yoga/tantra, as their are other variations.) It includes a classic overview of kundalini energy and each of the chakras, the relationship of physical yoga (asanas) to pranayama/meditation, and details on locks (granthis), mantras (chants), yantras (geometric visualizations), deities, colors, and more, used in this tradition to open the chakras and move the kundalini up from the 1st chakra into the 7th in a controlled, traditional manner. Johari also includes psychological information related to the traits and energies of each chakra, and how the opening of a chakra may manifest psychologically, which is a little more unusual in traditional teaching texts of this type, and is part of what makes this a modern classic. Frequent references and quotes from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and the Upanishands are included.

Because of these references and the use of Sankrit terms, this book is probably not the best resource for readers entirely new to the chakras and kundalini yoga. A glossary is included in the back of the book however, so an industrious beginner may be able to work their way through it. Otherwise, books such as Chakra Yoga: Balancing Energy for Physical, Spiritual, and Mental Well-being by YogaZone founder Alan Finger or Kundalini: Divine Energy, Divine Life by energy healer Cyndi Dale would be my personal starting recommendations.

However, for any serious student of yoga, particularly kundalini yoga, or for anyone already somewhat familiar with the chakras and associated pranayama and meditation techniques, this will be an invaluable resource.

When Kareem's father is arrested as a traitor, Suleiman's own father appears to be next. The ensuing brutality resonates beyond the bloody events themselves to a brutalizing of heart and mind for all concerned. Matar renders it brilliantly, as well as zeroing in on the regime's reign of terror itself: mock trials, televised executions, neighbors informing on friends, persecution mania in those remaining. By the end, Suleiman's father must either renounce the cause or die for it, and Suleiman faces the aftermath of conflicts (including one with Kareem) that have left no one untouched. Adult/High School—This is the story of the impact of small revolutions, not on the men and women who participate in the upheavals, but on the children who barely understand the world in which they find themselves. Suleiman is a nine-year-old in Qaddafi's Libya, proud of his country and his father, and worried about his mother's "illness." He is unprepared to understand the danger his father, a believer in democracy, is in, or the role that he, just a child, must play to protect his family. What is most disturbing is that he must play the games of adults, but without knowing the rules. There is no heroism here, only fear, betrayal, and mistrust. This is a difficult book: the characters are fatally flawed, the plot revels in the gray area of a child's memories and immature perceptions, and in the end there is little redemption. The plot unfolds credibly through the boy's eyes, and it is readers who shed light on the secrets. There is no judgment, and yet there is a heavy patina of guilt in the narrative. Well written, with evocative descriptions of heat and landscape that intensify readers' experience, the story lingers long after the book is closed. Short-listed for both the 2006 Man Booker Prize for Fiction and the Guardian First Book Award, Hisham Matar's novel, widely published, raises comparisons to Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner (***1/2 Sept/Oct 2003). Critics agree that Matar's poetic, visual prose reflects a skill and maturity often lacking in first novels. Of the two points of view which Matar employs, the perspective of the young child narrator is effective and at times even chilling, as the baffled and terrorized Suleiman attempts to unravel the complexities of the adult world and the brutality of Libyan politics. Certainly Matar, who left Libya at age nine and whose father was also a political dissident, shares characteristics with his protagonist. The only flaw? A relatively weak conclusion.

Read Anatomy of a Disappearance instead by Matar

Matar is an extremely well educated thoughtful writer with profound ideas and a sense of poetry. His novels tend to be written in the POV of a young boy and he is incredibly successful in drawing the reader in to his writing. There is a sense of poetry and sensuality in his writing that one rarely finds today. Matar makes one think and re-examine how one lives in the world. His attention to detail is remarkable and his powers of observation eye-opening. This is clearly a debut novel. The young boy's actions and motivations are not believable and the storyline frustrates. Matar definely has worthwhile things to say and there are scenes in the novel that really work. Sadly, there are many that do not work. I found myself feeling perplexed by the actions and thoughts of his young boy narrator. At times the boy behaved as though he were younger, and at other times he behaved as though he were old and wise well beyond his years. There is a voice problem in the first novel that is missing in Anatomy of a Disappearance. I read Anatomy of a Disappearance first and was therefore disappointed by the uneven quality of In the Country of Men.

In "", Matar's style matured and he solves his "voice" issues, creating a believable character that we can empathize with. In Anatomy of a Disappearance, love in all its vicissitudes is explored. I read "Anatomy: in one day despite the slow opening (first 20 pages or so). More than anything, Matar's writing expresses a wonderful humanity. His accounts of what it is like to have a parent (disappear) explores the idea that absence can become more overpowering than presence. Read Matar. You won't regret it. But read Anatomy of a Disappearance instead. It is so much better in every way and definitely deserved the honor of Booker Short List that it received. It is a book that will stay with you.

An authentic description of Libyan traumata

I moved recently to Libya and gave the book to each of my children so they can better understand the injuries that 20+ years of Qaddhafiism have inflicted on Libya and its kind inhabitants. Memories of repression, arbitrariness, betrayal and brutality still haunt the Libyans as they are struggling to rebuild a free and inclusive State and to regain respect for themselves and for their fellow citizens. The fact that the book's narrator is a young boy makes the whole story even more haunting. His innocence is increasingly perverted by the poisonous environment that surrounds him, and he is even tempted to accept the brutality and cynicism of the oppressors as a masculine role model. In this country of men, it is ironically the boy's mother - a lady crushed by the double yoke of a male society and of a repressive State apparatus - who turns out to be the "strong" character. She paves the way to a more humane future, by instilling maternal love in a world of hate, and by eventually rescuing the boy from the grips of a totalitarian system. This too - the role of women and of victims in the reconstruction of a conflict-torn society - is an important lesson for present-day Libya.

The mind of a child portrayed by a literary master

This is an excellent novel, a work of literature. It is deceptively simple in form, content, and style, the latter a requisite since it is narrated by a 9-year-old boy. The skill of the author must be consummate to have been able to convey at one and the same time an immature and bewildered childish consciousness and sufficiently detailed (not to mention eloquent) observations of what was going on around him, and inside him, for the reader to understand it all at a mature level.

Besides simply saying well done, my main reason for writing this "review" (just a comment, really) is to draw a comparison to Martha McPhee's equally wonderful debut novel, Bright Angel Time. Although about a very different "scene" (a 1970 American road trip versus 1979 Libya) and featuring an 8-year-old girl narrator who is far more "with it" than the 9-year-old boy, McPhee's book is identical in brilliantly portraying the quick shifts of feeling and attitude ("I love her." "I hate her.") that characterize a non-fully-formed personality (and, if truth be told, probably characterize most adult consciousnesses as well).

I guess I'll add one more comparison, since this is a recent discovery for me of a genre I had no particular reason to think I would dig (having chosen each of these books because of their overt theme - the road trip, Libya, and a World War II what-if -- rather than the nature of their narrator): Philip Roth's The Plot Against America. Mine is probably very much a minority report, but this is my favorite novel of Roth's by far, and again, it is the portrayal of a child's take on the world that I found particularly masterful (although the plot and episodes of the book are also amazing in their richness).

Yet another postscript: How can I have forgotten to mention Dickens' David Copperfield? -- not only another extraordinary portrayal of the consciousness of a child (and beyond) but also just possibly my favorite novel of all time.

This book covers the techniques of the various styles of Silat. At 166 pgs and 6 chapters, the book is best divided into 4 sections:
Striking tools/history (hand techniques covered like in karate manuals only with the weapons context of Silat Hands vs the Knife (that's right, you get that FIRST) Training Exercises (stances and 15 technique drills) Combat situations (covers empty hand attacks and some ground work)
The perfect companion to Draeger's "Fighting and Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago", this is more technique oriented ....... I personally liked the hands vs knife section of the book.

Short but excellent intro

This is a good, brief intro to Silat, covering a number of different styles and techniques, including both empty hands and weapons. Draeger's famous bigger book was groundbreaking and this book although shorter continues that tradition. Of course nowadays there are dozens if not hundreds of videos on Silat but at the time these books were all there was. I have an original copy from 1970. Like the previous reviewer I never expected to see it again anywhere. A true piece of martial arts publishing history.

About the Author
H. S. Philip Wong is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he has worked since 2004. Prior to joining Stanford University, he spent 16 years at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, where he held various positions from Research Staff Member to Senior Manager. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and his current research covers a broad range of topics including carbon nanotubes, semiconductor nanowires, self-assembly, exploratory logic devices, nanoelectromechanical devices, and novel memory devices.

Deji Akinwande is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas, Austin, which he joined after receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2009. Prior to beginning his Ph.D., he gained industry experience at Agilent Technologies, XtremeSpectrum/Freescale, and Motorola. He has published widely on carbon nanomaterials.

worst grammar book I know of

Purports to be a high-level EFL grammar book, but it is so replete with errors, it will make for constant headaches for any instructor who uses it. I don't mean typos, typing errors: I mean factual errors about English grammar because the author, Allen Ascher, has apparently only begun recently studying it.

A couple of examples:

1. "We went sight-seeing there." The book teaches that in this sentence, "sight-seeing" is a noun. (p. 161)

2. Ascher teaches that "not" isn't an adverb. (p. 199)

3. Book draws a false distinction between "I tried to learn" and "I tried learning" (p. 323).

4. Book claims that "there" as in "there is a cat" is a subject. (p. 38)

And there are others that got my goat, on pp: 296, 131, 149, and elsewhere.

Even if you're willing to overlook the errors (or use them as discusssion points), the book contains an awful lot of talk talk talk and not enough exercises.

Most annoyingly, the book contains all the corrections, as in "Check your answers on page 57." Needless to say, Ascher's answers will often contradict those of any competent teacher, causing problems for the latter in the classroom. (Right out of the gate for some of these: p. 4 teaches students that "is going to" is a helping verb. Have fun explaining that one: it's a defensible position, but also typical of how this book reconceptualizes things in startling and unconventional ways, something you don't necessarily need when you're teaching.)

A real editing resource

Are you a student who'd like to sharpen your editing skills so your essays and papers don't come back with your instructor's circles and underlines over your repeated grammar mistakes? Or maybe you're a writing instructor looking for resources to help your students edit their written work? Preferably readily-typed paragraphs or essays fraught with specific mistakes?
If you say "YES" in either case, then Allen Ascher's "Think about editing: a grammar guide" is THE book for you!
This book is really useful and practical because it's an English grammar guide-cum-practice book. Most grammar books provide "fill in the blanks" or cloze passage-type of exercises where you can find get the answers but somehow, you still make the same grammar mistakes in your writing. This book is different as it helps students look out for mistakes in paragraph or essay form. This way, it provides simulation-type exercises which hone you to apply grammar rules to your writing.
All the practise passages contain either one type of grammar mistake or several so you are gently eased into the editing mode.Soon, you'll get so used to looking for grammar mistakes in paragraph/ essay form, you'll find no trouble editing your own writing!
In a nutshell, it's a great book both as a grammar reference as well as a practice book. Trust me, you'll never agonize over editing your work again.

I think this is an excellent book

I am very interested in grammar and the proper use of words. So many people "murder" the English language these days. This book is easy to read and the lists make understanding easy. I think the book is very helpful when a person has questions about word usage, especially verbs, and punctuation.

World Religions Eastern Tradition

I ordered this book for a class I will be taking the fall semester at Ohio Northern University. I couldn't wait to start reading it. Great information, fantastic pictures and I love the layout of the book. Anyone who is interested in religion or just eastern traditions should read this book.

Well Written and Infomative

This was required reading for a course I took in Eastern Religions. The material was very well written and very comprehensive. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about Eastern Religions. Very easy to see the common thread that flows through them and how they developed over time. I am not trading this book in as I do with my other college text books, but keeping it in my personal library.
