About the Author
We have managed to find the ideal author for this new book, Chris Gibbs, a 42-year-old semiretired web designer and vice secretary, newsletter editor and technical adviser of the Locost Car Club. He has impeccable credentials for the job in hand, as he built his own Locost between 1997 and 1999 and has access to a tremendous database of Locost information through the Locost Car Club, which he currently runs in his spare time. He is currently working on a self-designed single-seater track-day car in the style of a 1960s F1 car, with Sierra running gear and a Honda Fireblade motorcycle engine.

Best DIY Car Instruction Book So Far

Chris Gibbs has taken the 'Locost' concept a step further. As this new book has CAD drawings (I believe done on Solidworks), it probably does not have any dimension errors that crept into the Ron Champion book. The book takes you through drawings and instructions so you can end up with a Ford Sierra (Merkur) based roadster. All you need are tools, patience, time, money and a lot of hard work. The single donor vehicle concept helps but only if the abovementioned vehicle is available (and affordable!) in your country. However, with some ingenuity and help from other builders online, you may be able to come up with something good. If you have questions there's even an official Haynes Roadster Forum to help you! Author Chris Gibbs participates in this official Haynes forum and posts updates to the book, corrections (yes even this book needs a few), advice and guidance.

Ron champion still the champion

I own all the previous editions of this book. This has been the least usefull unless you really do have the donor car used in it. I recommend the Ron champion book instead because it gives more latitude to adapt many old cars instead of one single rear suspension from a European ford. If this will be the first book of this type that you will purchase then I would recommend it. Those with experience and access to the internet would be better off with Ron champions book.

NOT the new locost reference

I was really expecting this book to bring a much needed update on Ron Champion's book but it's more of the same. The donor is still UK only and even there, it's getting hard to find. The drawings have dimensional errors like Champion's book. The design of the chassis is still lacking because it still does not incorporate some triangulations (Aussie mods) that are known to improve rigidity. A lot of the new designs shown in the book are overly complex (the pedal box is a good example). Finally, it still leaves a bunch of details out. I would recommend people to stay with Champion's book for inspiration and complement with Tanner's book or join a forum.

About the Author

Mohamed Alibi

Mohamed Alibi is a Linux System administrator at the training team of the European Bio-informatics Institute EMBL-EBI at the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. He got his master's degree in Network System and Telecom from the Faculty of Sciences of the Tunis El Manar University, with an internship held at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. He started his career as a system and network administrator at Institut Pasteur de Tunis from 2011 to 2015. During this time, he got associated with the network project H3ABioNet. He held the title of the co-chair of the Infrastructure Working Group, helping the development and enhancement of the computer infrastructure of project nodes. Between 2014 and 2015, he started his career as a part-time professor at Superior Institute of Biotechnology of Sidi Thabet, then, as a system administrator trainer with the University of Pretoria as part of the project H3ABioNet. At the end of 2015, Mohamed got his current position as a Linux system administrator with the European Bio-informatics Institute. He reviewed a book about CentOS 7 troubleshooting in late 2014 and early 2015.

Really good resource for new CentOS 7 admins

This is a great resource for key tasks in CentOS. All of the topics covered are addresses concisely and well. I gave it four stars rather than five as it could use coverage of some additional topics like software management and similar core tasks especially given it's title of "mastering". While it falls a bit short of mastery it's a great resource overall nonetheless.

Not near Mastery but pretty darn close!

I would agree with another reviewer first that it does say "Mastering" yet does fall short on the title. However the book covers enough of the core OS to claim some competency with CentOS 7 so I didn't deduct stars for it, note that if you've been working in the field for a long period of time a lot of this book will be just skipped over, so keep that in mind. I wanted to use it as a refresher into the CentOS 7 HPC and HAC deployment book I found by Packt as well, perfect combination. Certainly recommend this book to anyone wanting to enter the realm of CentOS 7 and wanting to administer it effectively, as well as know nearly all of the ins and outs one would expect you to know if you're looking for a job in Systems Engineering as a Linux Administrator.

What makes a man a man?

Men don't have many places to turn for solid lifestyle advice. Most men's periodicals and websites offer trendy fitness fads, designer suits or softcore bikini photos with all the lifestyle help of a beer commercial.

And then there's The Art of Manliness. As time goes by I've gained great respect for Brett and Kate McKay and the classic-yet-fresh take on masculinity on their Art of Manliness website. True to form, their first book isn't an e-book sold on Clickbank, it's a paper-and-ink tome fittingly titled The Art of Manliness: Classic Skills and Manners for the Modern Man.

This book delivers on its promise in spades. If you get past the swaggering Victorian dandy on the cover you'll find practical advice that applies here and now, for almost every aspect of a man's life.

Its eight chapters reflect all sides of the total man. "The Gentleman," for example, includes tips and advice on becoming well-groomed and well-mannered, from how to fold a pocket square and iron pants to the "lost art" of wet shaving with a safety razor. If you want to know the difference between the American Man Hug and the International Man Hug, how to land a plane in an emergency or how to braid your daughter's hair, it's in there.

As a bonus, I found Art of Manliness to be a quick, engaging read. Where the AoM site frequently discusses its topics at length, the book is concise and well-structured, quickly laying out the steps to a tip or the case for a concept and then moving on.

Tying these tips and trivia together is the notion that what makes a man a man has never changed -- it just gets lost in the noise. A well-put-together guy still has a better shot at the women, fathering is still a manly art, and a man who practices common courtesy as well as his fighting skills still has a leg up on both the meathead and the mouse. Many of the references here are from a "golden age" of manliness that may or may not be a tad idealized, but the information is solid.

Most of this book is just plain common sense, and you'll find yourself nodding in agreement with advice like "Stop Hanging Around with Women and Start Dating Them" and "Give and Accept Criticism Without Coming Off as a Cad." That's not to say there aren't some concepts that might make you think twice: reading the McKays' advice on "Modern Technology and the New Rules of Etiquette," you might realize you've been using your cell and e-mail less like a man and more like a cross between a 14-year-old girl and Unfrozen Caveman Computer Nerd. (Yes, it IS possible to use actual grammar in an e-mail message!)

Reading deeper, another key concept surfaces: one change we suffer in the modern world is that the brotherhood of men has become less of a brotherhood and more like a loose circle of disposable acquaintances. And that, son, makes you disposable too. How many of us under the age of 50 (hell, 65) have thought of joining a fraternal organization? And how often have you planned a vacation with your buddies that involved gathering firewood or catching your own dinner? I think the McKays nailed it on the head: there's an underlying homophobia that keeps us leery of true male friendships, and a modern detachment that keeps us closed off from (or worse, antagonistic toward) our communities.

Rant over. The point is, you WILL learn something from The Art of Manliness, and you WILL come away a better man no matter where you come from. The first print run completely sold out before Christmas, but the second printing is finally available, so make haste before it's gone too.

A mixed bag

I love the concept behind this book and ordered a copy hoping I could share it with my son. Sadly after reading it cover to cover, I'll be sending my copy to the resale shop.

The authors spent a significant amount of time examining some of the great men in history (a good place to start) but couldn't seem to apply what they learned to the modern male. For example, they correctly identified the art of self defense as an area worthy of study but then chose "Bartitsu", a style of self defense that died out almost 100 years ago, as what a modern man should become proficient in. A quick Google search shows there isn't a "Bartitsu" school within 200 miles of me and I'm pretty sure the 10 pages devoted to "Bartitsu" moves won't be enough to teach you anything useful.

There is some useful discussion on respect, honesty, integrity, reliability mixed in with some everyday skills everyone should know, like how to change a tire and jump start a car. Then they teach you how to find North/South/East/West with a stick and your analog watch but not how to read a map to figure out where you are and how to get where you're going. It's not like they ran out of room, because there's sections in the book on how to land an airplane and treat a snake bite.

Bottom line, there seems to be a lot of random "skills" like the fireman's carry and making fire without matches mixed with advice on how to be a man of character that never really gel. It was a good idea, just poorly executed.

Required reading.

So far my favourite chapters have been, Chapter One: The Gentleman, which is chock full of the basic stuff that your father should've taught you but serves as a good refresher course, or a solid foundation to build on. Chapter Four: The Lover, I am pretty tight with the chivalry stuff but it was a cool read especially the segments pertaining to marriage, I was hoping this chapter was Kate approved to help me get inside of the female mind and not let anything unimportant slip through. By far my favourite chapter was, Chapter Five: The Father, of course because I am a father and I especially appreciated the segment "Raise Resilient Kids, it reaffirmed many things I already practice in raising my daughter which is good because some of those things can be scary such as "2. Let Them Do Unsafe Things". Plus I was amused at the "Teach Your Kid To Ride A Bike" segment in particularly the old dirty trick of "..let go of the bike's seat. To avoid a possible freak-out and ensuing spill, don't tell him you're letting go." The last two chapters "The Leader" and "The Virtuous Man" could be combined with chapter one as required reading for every young man. The humor peppered into the segments is a nice touch and keeps the writing down to earth and kept the pages turning. The glossary in the back is a nice "The Clockwork Orange" touch, and I know if I adopt too much of it I will sound like I stepped out of a movie (although I do naturally use a few of those). I now count "square-rigged" the newest edition to my vocabulary.

It definately sets itself apart from any self-help, lifestyle, fashion, philosophy type of books by means of the honesty of its we-give-a-damn tone that it strikes. A great book for perpetuating the endangered art of manliness.

Japan's worst nuclear radiation accident took place at a uranium reprocessing facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, on 30 September 1999. The direct cause of the accident was cited as the depositing of a uranyl nitrate solution--containing about 16.6 kg of uranium, which exceeded the critical mass--into a precipitation tank. Three workers were exposed to extreme doses of radiation.

Hiroshi Ouchi, one of these workers, was transferred to the University of Tokyo Hospital Emergency Room, three days after the accident. Dr. Maekawa and his staff initially thought that Ouchi looked relatively well for a person exposed to such radiation levels. He could talk, and only his right hand was a little swollen with redness. However, his condition gradually weakened as the radioactivity broke down the chromosomes in his cells.

The doctors were at a loss as to what to do. There were very few precedents and proven medical treatments for the victims of radiation poisoning. Less than 20 nuclear accidents had occurred in the world to that point, and most of those happened 30 years ago. This book documents the following 83 days of treatment until his passing, with detailed descriptions and explanations of the radiation poisoning.

This is a book about a man named Ouchi whose chromosomes were destroyed by a blast of neutron rays while working in unsafe conditions in a uranium processing facility. For 83 days, a crack team of doctors, nurses, and medical experts from several countries try to keep him alive. Because Ouchi's chromosomes have been destroyed, his body cannot generate new cells to replace the dead ones. His skin falls off. His mucus membranes disappear. He is in constant pain. He suffers massive internal hemorrhages and the medical staff have to constantly pump fluids and nutrients into his body to keep him alive. His organs fail, one by one, and their functions are taken over by various medical apparatus. At various points, Ouchi's doctors and nurses question whether or not what they are doing is the right thing to do. That is to say, are they actually helping him, or are they just endlessly prolonging his agony?

This is a slim but tough book.It goes into gruesome but necessary detail about the deterioration of a human body afflicted by neutron beam radiation. It is told in a straightforward reportorial style that goes into thoroughgoing technical detail but not so much that the average reader cannot follow along. It also gives space to the emotional turmoil the medical staff underwent as they battled to keep Ouchi alive.

In some ways, this is a book about the dangers of atomic radiation, but it is also a strange kind of existential novel where the main character's mental state is largely unknown at the height of his suffering. Ouchi was under heavy sedation for much of his sickness and he was unable to communicate in any detail what his thoughts and feelings were. The book seems to suggest that had he been awake his suffering would've been monstrous. The medical staff did what they thought was best even in the face of a hopeless situation.

This is harsh story taken from real life and told in harrowing but necessary detail.

There can be no spoiler alert here, as the title tells you the end of the story. Also, the vibrant yellow blocks on the book cover gradually turn a sickly green. The 83rd block is black. Goodbye.

I read "A Slow Death" in two hours and have been disturbed about it ever since. Despite the efforts of some of the world's most talented and compassionate medical professionals, Mr. Ouchi was doomed from the blue flash. This book describes the hope of success and the grim progression of the inevitable. Intricate medical procedures and nuclear physics were explained in a way that did not bore or confuse me, and did not cause me to lose sight of the humanity of the suffering patient.

After watching some Cold War movies I was interested in learning about what happened to people who were exposed to high levels of radiation. In the movies people grew pale, threw up a lot, and died; I knew that couldn't be the entire story. Radiation Sickness is described on the internet as including things like vomiting, hair loss, skin hemorrhages, bleeding, loss of white blood cells, pain, delirium and often death, but that seemed vague. This book, however, explained in detail how these symptoms (and several unexpected others) actually played out in the life of a thirty-five year old husband and father. Afterwards I felt a little guilty for reading it and peering into the window of such agony just to satisfy my curiosity.

The gentle and amiable patient did not realize for several days that he was what is termed a "walking ghost". While he appeared to be fine for a while, all of his cells were damaged and his death was certain. Pain medication to make him comfortable when symptoms arose would have ordinarily been the only intervention while awaiting the inevitable, but in his case the hospital staff and his family did not tell him that he received a lethal dose and maintained that fiction almost until the day he died. The doctors kept giving him transplants, transfusions, skin grafts, injections and cardiac massage -- a heroic effort overall -- to keep him alive until maybe something would actually help. Since severe radiation sickness is not common, these folks had no real idea what they could do and dealt with symptoms as they arose. And arose. And arose. The fact that Mr. Ouchi survived for months is nothing short of amazing, but perhaps honor and hope came at too high a cost: his incomprehensible CONSCIOUS suffering.

Despite the horrific subject, the book was engaging. I came to care about all of the real people involved. I think I learned a lot. I'm glad I read it, and intend to read it again more slowly.

Not well translated and edited but extremely fascinating piece of non fiction

This book gets 4 stars mainly because I find the subject matter so intriguing. The book was originally written in Japanese and then translated to English. It reads as though the writer knew English as a second language well enough to write a book but didn't understand the subtle nuances that make reading English fluid. As a result, any attempt the author makes to convey the emotional changes of the family and medical team reads too flowery. This contrasts with the rest of the book which places a strong emphasis on the specifics of how a nuclear criticality occurs and what went wrong in this accident. It details every symptom Ouchi experienced and every medical procedure performed. The book provides sufficient background as well. This aspect of the book is done exceptionally well and answered many questions I had about this incident. Despite some discord in structure, this book is a truly fascinating case study in radiation treatment and is well worth the read.

Jose Santaella trained with Ferran Adrià, Eric Ripert, and Gary Danko before opening his own eponymous restaurant in his native San Juan. Puerto Rico in a Cookbook

Absolutely stunningly beautiful book. The photos are gorgeous, the recipes are exotic and a taste of Puerto Rico. With more than a hundred recipes - including dumplings of mashed plantains and crab, fried whole snapper with pineapple and cilantro salsa, ham and cilantro béchamel croquettes, cassava fritters with pork sausage, codfish fritters, marinated mussels, beef stew with pork rind rice (oh my goodness was this delicious), pork and sweet potato gratin -- you can take a trip to Puerto Rico by going into your kitchen. The desserts --- Mallorca bread, doughnuts, flan....just jump off the page. As soon as I received this book - I posted in The Cookbook Junkies, my group of 14,000 cookbook fanatics - how much this book was needed. I love it - it's one of my top books of 2014.

This book is an excellent reference for Puerto Rican cuisine. Firstly, I have made a number of the recipes and I found them easy to follow, and better yet, they work! Secondly, the book is full of beautiful photographs which enriches the experience. Highly recommended.
