I own several editions

Only four stars cause "I like it", but the information in all of them is getting dated, other than learning basic mechanics that a beginner might not understand or already know.
Having been certified as an ASE Master Auto Technician, and having formal training in mechanics, along with heavy equipment experience in the military some years ago, I believe this book is a fine book, I own the the second edition printed in 1980 of 774 pages, and the non second edition printed in 1978, of which I both paid just two weeks ago only about $30 each shipped in near new condition, and as a book collector I figure that just like many other types of books I have bought, the second edition was obviously the same number of pages from 1980 on like the earlier editions had the same number of pages, so I can only conclude that like so many other books styles that once they started on a printing they kept the same words meaning 1980 on editions are all 774 pages, and very likely the same, unsure if the 1964 edition up to the late 70's are the same, but likely so from the pics in the 78 edition(looks like a early 60's reprint), there could have been a few "70's" pieces of equipment talked of.
The main differences in the 1964/1978 1st edition and the 1980 2nd edition is about 100 pages of more information on solid state ignitions, more automatic transmission data, some newer photos of newer equipment, deletion of certain pics and drawings and likely information that wasn't relevant anymore, and more talk of more modern offerings of equipment by some of the manufacturers then for the 1980s, and frankly, heavy equipment hasn't changes much.
I did learn that a nice vital book to have mentioned in these editions is "Moving the Earth, The Workbook of Excavation", one I have on order that this book has parts of supposedly.

Explains universal mechanical principles to the layman.

I read this book 25 years ago when I was a fledgling truck mechanic, and I found it to be a comprehensive, useful guide to all things mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, etc. It is a must for someone wanting to have a basic understanding of these principles, and how to apply them to cars, trucks, tractors, welders, air compressors, pumps, etc. Separate chapters on Disassembly and Assembly, discussing methods of work; a chapter on The Inclined Plane, and relating this principle to ramps, screw threads, gears and leverage, and the angle of a bulldozers blade; a chapter on Lubrication, with a cartoon drawing of an old neglected bulldozer sitting in the field, covered with cobwebs and dust, a cat resting on the hood, and the caption, "bearings are probably rusting." This book should be in every mechanics library.

yes, bizarre!

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.
Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

A worthy addition to your design library

I have a collection of books on architecture, interior design and fine homes and generally examine all of the notable volumes that appear at the bookseller. I ran across this book the other day and was ready to dismiss it because I usually dislike design books that are more about the designer than their designs, especially if there are multiple shots of said designer in evening wear. However, Ms. McDonald won me over with the quality and breadth of the projects she chose to present in this volume, even if I'm not typically a fan of her kind of decorating. The interiors are striking, the photography is generally beautiful (with a few exceptions, where the photography is not up to par) and the whole package is well-presented. This is a fine addition to anyone's design library.

Simply Alluring

In this gorgeous book Mary McDonald offers page after page of stunning rooms that take your breath away. They're one-of-a-kind rooms which you don't forget easily. None of her rooms look alike although there are common features such as use of chinoiserie, stripes, saturated color, global elements and animal prints. The book is designed around chapters titled Seductive, Curate, Glamour and Grand Tour. Then she teases out the elements of these. The Seductive chapter includes elements that are labeled flirty, dressy, charm and whimsy. You see how these descriptives play out in her rooms through the photos.

Room decor is a kind of chemistry, so what do you want to combine? Everything is created twice, first as an idea, then tangibly. Before talking furniture styles or colors, what mood or emotion do you want the room to evoke? If you begin with the ideas (or adjectives), then everything you choose for the room can exemplify those elements. McDonald shows how she has done that through the adjectives she employs: flirty, charming, seductive, whimsical, chic, dramatic, global and colorful.

McDonald explains some ways she plans rooms. After considering the needs and lifestyle of the client, assessing the bones of the home etc. she says: "...I filter the plan through my own reservoir of inspiration which comes from so many sources: fashion, textiles, period clothing, old fonts, drips of water, peaks in whipped cream, old gold bullion, buttons, teacups, machinery parts, grasshoppers, lizards, animal furs, jewelry, rocks, minerals, leaves, flowers, the grain on an old piece of wood, the ridges on shells, black sand, bright plastic cups, Lucite, baby vegetables, fancy candies... my list is endless.... Creativity is like breathing for me--it's my life force." Her rooms are evidence of this, although I didn't see any grasshoppers.

McDonald is talented in using fabric in rooms which gives the rooms extra romance and softness. One of my favorite rooms is a gray and white bathroom in which she has placed a banquette created out of a striped cotton that is tufted with buttons; the fabric on it floats to the floor. She used to work as a milliner which explains her virtuosity with fabric. If you like furniture that looks like clothes--or that furniture pieces are wearing them--with ties, tufting, smocking, welting, ruffles, borders, beads and ribbons, you'll enjoy seeing the original pieces that she creates. Her rooms include many dress-maker details; it's obvious she has a love for fabric which is used innovatively. Several of the rooms in this book I'd seen in magazines before and thought what fascinating, stand-out stylish rooms without realizing the same designer had conceived them.

If you like more neutral understated rooms, you may find some of these rooms quite colorful. There are some more sober-colored rooms sprinkled throughout the book, but McDonald clearly is not afraid of bright colors. Some describe her rooms as "over-the-top", which I like. However, there is a yellow and black room that reminds me of when my sister-in-law went to work in a bold yellow and black suit and a coworker with salty language said, "Well, well, if it isn't a flippin' bumble bee." That's the only room I'd need to wear sun glasses for.

It's fun to read about how McDonald approaches design and study the vibrant photos of these breathtaking and memorable rooms. It seems she's comfortable experimenting and taking some risks which is why perhaps her rooms are one-of-a-kind. It's going to be a treat to follow her career (with her new show on BRAVO) and design trajectory. I look forward to many more books by her. This is one of the most interesting design books I've seen recently, and will kindle your imagination on possibilities in decorating.

Interesting, Too many Sex-kitten photos of the Author!

I love decorating books, love AD, Trad. Home, etc. I got this book and began thumbing through and was almost revolted at the poses of the author, like she thought it was her opportunity to dress up and flaunt her sexiest poses. It just kinda bugs you! I got the feeling she was advertising for a mate or something!!! I immediately got turned off and thought, I'm going to return this just for that. Then I picked up the book and started reading through it and I do genuinely like alot of the photographs and she is interesting to read. So I'll keep it. But please Mary and Publisher, let's do the next one with a little more class and keep the subject matter to decorating! Like the way Charlotte Moss does it... a few photos of her in action, not making google eyes at the camera... Charlotte Moss is total CLASS! PS> there is way too much sisal carpeting in this book. Why do all decorators do white fabric and sisal carpeting? They are supposed to be fabulous at mixing colors and patterns, that's what really fascinates a non-decorator.

great help

Almost any substitution you need! And more than one substitution is usually offered. They even tell you how many mini-marshmallows make up a large marshmallows; that's helpful. No one wants to buy marshmallow creme for one recipe calling for 1/2 cup...and then wonder what to do with the rest. Instead, make your own creme with marshmallows of any size and some corn syrup...Voila! I also like the boxes beside some ingredients, showing ounces, grams, cups, tablespoons. THAT is most helpful.

After having this book for two years, I still find it a great help, referring to it several times a month.

Every Kitchen Needs This

I am so glad I bought this! I'm astonished at the number of ingredient substitutions, for foods I've never even heard of. But what has been most useful has been lists of substitutions for things like whipping cream or certain beans. It's helping me use what I have at home and therefore save time (fewer trips to the store) and money (using what I already have, so it doesn't go bad, and also not having to spend more money on special ingredients). It's also helping me prepare more meals from scratch, because lacking one or two ingredients is no longer a deal-breaker. For someone like me, who is experienced in the kitchen but still learning how to be more fluid and flexible and "intuitive," a book like this is essential.

I bought a second copy to give to a friend whose son was just diagnosed with some unusual food allergies. This will help her be able to prepare meals that will help her son eat in common with the rest of the family, and she is so excited to have this book now.

Great Resource for Amateur or Experienced Cooks

I really enjoyed this book, even though like others stated, some of the items were so obscure I had never heard of them! LOL. Saying that, I would still recommend it highly for anyone who cooks. I mean who hasn't started cooking and realized they did not have an essential ingredient. I looked up several of my favorites items to see if any of the substitutions were feasible, most were. Each of the ingredients in their reference book includes a description of the item, i.e. Durum Flour: finely ground durum (high-gluten) wheat.

One of the features I liked about the book is that some of the listed ingredients, i.e. butter and all-purpose flour, include substitutions "To Vary the Flavor" or "For Better Health". Many of the substitutions also include info on how it might affect your recipe. For example, if you look up Butter, the "For Better Health" substitution states: 1/2 butter and 1/2 vegetable oil, best "for baking, especially quick breads and some cookie doughs: reduce baking time slightly; baked goods will be slightly more chewy; use pastry or cake flour for lighter texture..." This kind of info is just the thing to help make me a better cook.

The final sections include ingredient tables for common foods and include direction of what they are best suited (cooking, baking, eating). Other tables include ingredients with characteristics of each variety and what can be substituted within the categories (potatoes, beans, pears, apples, olives, legumes, lentils, mushrooms and more).

I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves cook.

Knight’s success as a college basketball coach is unquestioned. He was college basketball’s Coach of the Year five times and won three NCAA championships. He’s currently a basketball analyst for ESPN. Knight’s success was built on preparation. Recognizing that offensive success could be fleeting, he always emphasized defense, which he describes as making the appropriate response to the negativity one can encounter on offense. So negative thinking about offense leads one to focus, as coaches and players, on defense. See? Embrace Negative Thinking

I have never been a basketball fan, so I went into reading The Power of Negative Thinking wondering if I would "get it." I knew who Bob Knight was (even as a non-basketball fan, how could you not?), but had no idea what to expect. I'm happy to report one need not be a basketball fan to thoroughly enjoy this lively, accessible, conversational-style look at the power of overcoming positivity with negative thinking.

There has been a backlash over the cult of positive thinking over the last few years, and with good reasons. Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America is one of the first books I read on the subject. And over the years, a great deal of research has come out warning about the dangers of unfettered optimism. But usually, optimists dismiss discussion of negative thinking as being depressing, pessimistic, or just giving up.

Knight starts his book with a very simple premise that overcomes this objection. Negative thinking is not about giving up or being a pessimist. Instead, it is about NEGATING everything that can get in the way of victory. Winning isn't about who wants it more. Winning is about who is most prepared. And being prepared is about honestly assessing strength, weaknesses, and developing a plan that negates mistakes and anything else that can get in the way. Or, as he sums it up:

"Having the will to win is not enough. Everyone has that. What matters is having the will to prepare to win."

Another point Knight makes is to not push people to do what they can't do, but push them to do what they can. It seems so logical, and yet we ignore this every day:

"My list of hollow platitudes includes the idea that You Can Do Anything You Really Want to Do. The truth is you can't. Chalk it up to the Divine Being's grand plan for making the whole world work because of interdependence, but the fact is each of us has more things that we cannot do well than we can. That's why society has doctors and plumbers and electricians and mechanics and every other Craiglist specialist."

The point is that whether you are pushing yourself, or running a team, you need to have a clear understanding not only of your strengths, but also an honest assessment of your weaknesses. The inability to do something is not a character flaw (as is not-so-subtly implied when you are told "If you really want to do it, you can"). The Negative Thinker recognizes the strengths and weaknesses in his team and, instead of pushing people to do what they can't do, pushes them to do what they can to best take advantage of their talents.

There is a lot of great information in this book of particular value to anyone in a leadership position, whether that is a sports coach or a business owner. In particular, when he discusses setting maximum, but realistic, expectations for those who answer to you. People will, in general, work to whatever level you will tolerate. Don't tolerate less than maximum results. But at the same time, make sure those expectations are based on the real abilities of the person and not an arbitrary, unreachable goal. He offers great examples from his own coaching experiences on how to work toward this.

I have two minor gripes with the book. First, at times Knight gets a little too conversational. He'll be on a discussion point, and then switch over to an odd little anecdote that bears little resemblance to the point he was making. Second, there are a lot of unnecessary filler quotes thrown at the end of each chapter which are just random adages and clichés. In fact, half of Chapter 11 is nothing but clichés and adages. It felt like they were trying to fluff up the word count. (My copy appears to be double spaced, but this may be because it is an advanced review copy and the final version may have more normal spacing between the sentences).

Overall, The Power of Negative Thinking is a fantastic look into the thought processes and work ethic of a man who knows that it takes more that Happy Fluffy Thoughts to win.

Necessary reading for today's pro coaches

Positive thinking is really important in sports. Athletes do best when they are confident in their skills. That being said, confrontation is important. Working to improve weaknesses is important. Realizing how to maximize strengths and minimize/strengthen weak areas is a key to success.

When Professional athletes that have been deluged with positive thinking reinforcement then become coaches, the fear of disrupting confidence and chemistry in the room is so imbedded that it can restrict the need to address and minimize athletes limitiations. Bobby Knight's book addresses this.

A phenomenon when first published in 1972, the Inner Game was a real revelation. Instead of serving up technique, it concentrated on the fact that, as Gallwey wrote, "Every game is composed of two parts, an outer game and an inner game." The former is played against opponents, and is filled with lots of contradictory advice; the latter is played not against, but within the mind of the player, and its principal obstacles are self-doubt and anxiety. Gallwey's revolutionary thinking, built on a foundation of Zen thinking and humanistic psychology, was really a primer on how to get out of your own way to let your best game emerge. It was sports psychology before the two words were pressed against each other and codified into an accepted discipline.

The new edition of this remarkable work--Billie Jean King called the original her tennis bible--refines Gallwey's theories on concentration, gamesmanship, breaking bad habits, learning to trust yourself on the court, and awareness. Know Your "Selves" Better

As most people can guess by the title, the "inner game" of tennis is the game that takes place iin the mind of the player and is played against barriers such as nervousness, self-doubt, etc.

To gain clarity on the mental problems in tennis, the book looks at the concepts of "Self 1" and "Self 2". Self 1 is the name that is given to the conscious ego-mind which likes the tell Self 2, you and your potential, how to hit the ball and play the game. Or, to put it another way, Self 1 is the "teller" and Self 2 the "doer". I found this to be an interesting idea, as we have all caught ourselves talking to ourselves or have seen others talking to themselves during a game. If you ask someone who they are talking to, they will usually say "I'm talking to myself." This, of course, implies that there are 2 "selves", "I" and "myself"- and so is born the idea of Self 1 and Self 2. Pretty astutue observation in my opinion.

Now according to the book, to achieve peak performance, the key is to resolve any lack of harmony between the two selves, as it is the contrary thinking of Self 1 which causes interference with the natural abilities of Self 2. This requires the learning of several inner skills, such as the art of letting go of self-judgements, letting Self 2 do the hitting, recognizing and trusting the natural learning process, and so on- which is what much of the books spends discussing.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who plays tennis (or any other sport for that matter) as it does a great job in dealing with the fact that many of our difficulties in tennis are indeed mental in origin. Other helpful books for tennis players I've come across include Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow.

A Landmark Work

I remember clearly the first time I read this book. It was the summer before 9th grade, almost two decades ago. I'd been playing tennis for about a year. My trusty wooden racquet in tow, I had taken lessons, read every how-to book and tried to follow all the step-by-step pictures. Also, I was getting soundly beaten by friends who'd be playing longer than myself.
I found the book in the library and was surprised at how thin it was. Then I noticed there were no pictures. I thought "What kind of tennis book has no pictures? " I started to read there next to the shelves and my life has never been the same. I wound up captain of my highschool tennis team, all-state selection, and along the way crushed the bums who used to beat me.
Now I'm almost 30 and a tennis has-been but still play a pretty good game. And whenever I go on the court (be it tennis, basketball, squash) I apply the same principles. I stop trying, stop forcing. Quiet the mind and let it happen.
As others reviewers have written in this space, this book will transform your game. It will also broaden your appreciation for what the human body can do. It will enrich your life. This is a classic and indispensible work.

If you want to play better, read this book..... I am proof

This book cuts right through to what all tennis players inherantly know, your success on the court is directly related to what is going on in your mind. You realize that your body knows how to play, and needs no gratification or instructions by your inner critic. The less you interfere, the better your body will perform. When your mind is quiet and trusts your body's abilities is when it is has the freedom to perform.
My game improved dramatically since my first match after I read the book, one technique is to occupy your mind into silence by focusing it on something. The thing I focused on was the spin of the ball as it came to me. When I began to concentrate on that, my mind was silent and focused on the ball. When I do this, the ball seems slower and bigger. All of my strokes improved by doing this. Another thing I got out of this book is to let go of all of your lessons and ideas of how to move your feet, how to hit the ball, how to angle your raquet head. A match is no time to ponder these things it is a time to do them. When in a match, just let your body do what it knows how to do. Don't focus on details, just focus on the goal of making a good tennis shot.
All of this is wonderful, but the best thing this book has to offer, is giving the reader the understanding of how to learn in a natural way without your inner voice giving approval or disaproval. And that is a skill that will apply to all things in your life.
I can't wait to read the Inner Game of Work.
