From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—An Arab American teen, Kamran has always considered himself fully American—a high school star football player who dates one of the most popular girls and a homecoming king contender. He plans to attend West Point for college, like his army officer brother, Darius. All of this changes when authorities identify his brother as a deserter and terrorist, responsible for the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Turkey and the deaths of 53 people. Life takes on nightmarish proportions when Kamran is first ostracized by his friends and classmates and then taken into custody and held as a prisoner by the U.S. government. Despite days of questioning and watching videos of Darius, the teen refuses to acknowledge that his brother is a terrorist. As he pays closer attention to the videos, he realizes that his brother is trying to give him information about terrorist plans by using scenarios from games the two used to play and the Code of Honor they signed when they were children. With help from surprising sources, Kamran escapes and heads out to find his sibling. Exciting, at times ripped from the headlines, and scary, this cinematic work has layers of intrigue and danger in each scene. The well-developed protagonist reacts in typical teen fashion, with anger, doubt, rage, and faith in his brother. This action-packed novel will appeal to a variety of readers and will raise questions about patriotism, loyalty, and trust. VERDICT A winner for independent reading and deeper discussion with its timely topic, strong writing, and appealing characters.—Janet Hilbun, University of North Texas

Code of Honor by Alan Gratz
By Mystccwby
amran Smith is a 17 year old high school senior, on the football team, dating Julia who as he states is "HOT", and enjoys hanging with his best friend Adam. After graduation in a few months he will be off to West Point to follow in his brothers footsteps and become an Army Ranger defending his country, following a code his brother and him had made up as kids playing in the back yard, a Code of Honor. Though his mother is of Iranian heritage, his father is American as are they all, they are not Muslims, Christian or any other faith really they are just hard working Americans with dreams.
That all changes when a video comes to light, a video showing Kamran's brother Darius leading an attack against an American post, it can't be but suddenly he is thrust into a different life, his friends gone so as not to be associated with one of them, they are taken by Homeland Security and interned as well as questioned. His brother is not a traitor, he is an American soldier, a Ranger, the don't give in nor do they retreat they fight even unto death.
One man Mickey Hagarty believes Kamran, wants to think Darius isn't a traitor, as his own brother was in the IRA, so begins Kamrans quest to help prove his brother isn't a traitor, his family isn't and he isn't. His brother and him both live by a code, a Code of Honor.

This was a very well written story, the story line could play out anywhere. It is a story of hatred, injustice, but also of courage, conviction, and of love. A brothers bond and their believe in a system, their Code of Honor. I would recommend this to a reader of any age though it is a contemporary YA novel.

keeps the reader eagerly turning pages
By Teen Reads
Kamran Smith seems to have it all; he’s got a beautiful girlfriend, he’s on top of his football game AND his best friend just scored them free tickets to the Super Bowl. But suddenly, life takes a sharp turn for the worse. Kamran’s older brother, Darius, who had been fighting loyally in the US Army in Afghanistan, is identified as a terrorist. He’s seen on video as the bomber of the US Embassy in Turkey. A few days later, he releases a video ranting against infidels and declaring his mission to wage holy war on the United States.

Suddenly, Kamran’s entire family is under suspicion. It doesn’t matter that they’re US citizens in an Arizonan suburb; the boys’ mother is Iranian and was raised Muslim, and being related to Darius, with his sudden change of loyalty, means that not only is Kamran is treated like a foreigner, but a terrorist himself.

Kamran is overwhelmed, confused and angry. This doesn’t make sense. Darius is the older brother he looked up to and admired; there’s no way that Darius would have turned traitor to his own country. After all, the two boys had a Code of Honor growing up, a Code mandating them to be brave and protect the innocent, which they swore to uphold no matter what. Then Kamran is taken captive by the US government, which begins interrogating him about Darius, and he must confront his own growing doubts to defend his brother’s innocence.

Author Alan Gratz writes in fairly straightforward language, and sometimes his way of writing comes across as heavy-handed or clichéd. Still, what CODE OF HONOR lacks in finesse or subtlety, it makes up for in good old-fashioned action. Not a single detail or event in the plot is superfluous, which keeps the reader eagerly turning pages, wondering how Kamran will leap the hurdles life throws at him. The chapters are brimming with cliff-hangers, and as I read I found myself wishing that the book will be granted a feature-length adaptation so that I could see every plot twist on the big screen.

Kamran is hardly the sharpest tool in the shed but he has a good heart, and his faith in his brother, though shaky at times, is so pure that it makes the reader want to believe in Darius too despite the mounting evidence against him. CODE OF HONOR’s biggest strength is that it raises all the right questions. This book makes a reader confront notions of patriotism, loyalty and how a government must act to protect its own. I very much appreciated that it was narrated by a teenager who was raised as American as all his peers, but because of his heritage, grew up sometimes being treated differently anyway. CODE OF HONOR doesn’t beat around the bush as it discusses important topics such as Islam and terrorism, family and country, honor and disgrace.

All in all, the novel is an incredibly fast and enjoyable read. Gratz cuts right to the chase: he launches into the heart of the action almost immediately, and once in the thick of it he doesn’t distract from his story with extraneous romance, exposition or literary frills. This renders CODE OF HONOR, whose readers will lament Kamran’s failures and celebrate his triumphs, quite the fun ride.

I loved this book
By Kat Mat
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down! I am a middle school teacher. My students loved it as well. While I agree with some of the other reviews that the plot is a little far fetched, I feel like this is the perfect book for a teenage boy (or girl) who is interested in an action-packed book. It reads just like an action movie!

I also recommend Alan Gratz' other book, Prisoner B-3087. It's one of those great books that appeals to all readers.

What is the difference between an expert and a master? Are obstacles barriers or markers that show you the way? Poker Knows will challenge you to take a deep look inward at the self, while at the same time build a foundation for winning at poker and life. A methodology for surviving the game is first laid out and then you are transported through time in the advanced section on winning the game. Guest appearances are made by some of science’s greatest minds like Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr, complemented by the imagination of Alice’s friends from Wonderland.

Some values stretch past the sum of the parts. You know a great meal or work of art when you experience it, but what is it that makes the experience so? How do you measure it? Maybe it does not matter how you measure it as much as knowing how your opponents measure it. The gold that grows bankrolls is located in a very profound place and Poker Knows draws you a map that leads right to it. It is not what you know that will propel your evolution, but rather how good you get at discovery and your imagination is the key.

Everyone can have the experience of being in the winner’s circle in poker or life. Your turn is coming up soon! It starts with the next decision, or maybe it’s the next question. The only thing in the way might be you.

Are you ready to go pro?

Poker Knows is not just about winning money
By Alan N. Schoonmaker, Ph.D.
Poker Knows can improve your poker and put money in your pocket, but that’s not its only objective. Hundreds of books can improve your poker results, but this one will also help you to understand yourself, other people, and life in general.
That understanding will improve your decisions about much more important issues than poker. Here are a few revealing quotations:
• "By becoming better at poker you will become better at everything."
• This book is “not entirely about poker. It’s about being a good explorer… It’s not what you know that will help you make a good decision. It’s how skillful you are at figuring things out.”
• “Many of the qualities required to be a great poker player are the same qualities for success in life.”
• “Ultimately, if you can master yourself, poker is a piece of cake.”
• “Pros begin their strategy based on situational value. It is the same for poker, business, or life.”
• “An important component of mindfulness is recognizing your own changing state of mind and taking control back.”
• “To be able to really trust yourself you have to be comfortable with vulnerability.”
• “You will become a better poker player from the information in this book, but my greatest hope is that you will discover enjoyable and productive ways to approach all your experiences… there are things that poker will teach you about yourself, others, and life in general.”

Poker's educational value is one of my passions. David Sklansky and I wrote "Poker Is Good for You" and DUCY? They stated that poker (and other types of gambling) can improve study habits, math understanding, logical thinking, concentration, patience, discipline, a long-term focus, realism, adjusting to diverse people, and many other valuable skills and traits.

The author of Poker Knows would agree that it develops those qualities, but he puts a higher priority than David and I did on developing self-knowledge: “Know thyself. You must understand yourself to … pick the right games that match your skill and play style…. We will discuss this more in: Mindset and Self Mastery.”

I greatly enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. I highly recommend it.

This is a fitting motto but should be "Einstein and Hunter S. Thompson write a book on poker containing a modern strategy"
By NoodleTheRiver
Poker KnowsThe cover of the book reads “There is a secret to discovering winning poker. Your imagination and courage lead the way”. This is a fitting motto but I think it should be a little more catchy like "Einstein and Hunter S. Thompson are locked in room and not allowed to leave until they write a book on poker containing a modern strategy for winning the game at the highest levels". I think I may have put the book in a nutshell right there.

This is not a book for beginners. I know all authors claim their book is for the beginner as well as the professional and all in between. If I had a dollar for every time I opened and poker book and read that.
This book does not teach you “HOW” to play poker.
The book aims to help the reader get better at “Thinking” about the game and how variance, winning, losing, and learning can be framed in a way that our human brain can comprehend.
Without giving any specifics here the book sets to explain that math no matter how advanced is only as good as the human mind can comprehend it. Which isn’t much when it comes to the astronomical complexities involved in a single game of randomness and probabilities such as in a multi-way pot played out to the river. The book also takes a deep look at where and when a poker player should be focusing their attention in order to reap the (GOLD) profits in the their game. This is done through entertaining stories and sometimes insane analogies followed by sound scientific theories. The author makes it clear that being observant, creative, and using your imagination will always trump the math and GTO (Game Theory Optimal) play but also notes that GTO is a subject that every poker player should have some knowledge in it. If you feel you’re up to the task of learning the human beatable aspect of the game and moving past the regular / average poker player then I would suggest a read of “Poker Knows.” I am going to rank it in my top 3 poker books written since Black Friday.
What did I not like about the book?
The book has grammatical errors. If you have read enough poker books you realize that this is almost a hallmark of poker literature and as far as I know dates back to Doyle Brunson’s Super System. I am starting to think that southern California and Las Vegas Nevada must have a “shoot on first site” rule when it comes to reliable publishers / proofreader. I wanted to get that out there before the grammar nazis come rushing in.

The beginning of the book. You get the feeling right away that the author has gone over and over on where and how to set the book in motion. The opening tries to set a fun almost beat-writer’s approach which I I enjoyed but I am sceptical that the rest of the poker world know who William S. Burroughs or Jack Kerouac were and fear a reader may get confused and stop before they get to the “Gold” written in the pages,
Finally I didn’t see where this book is available in audio format. I tend to choose audio over anything else these days because of the my busy schedule followed by moments of procrastination.

Even given those issues this book still gets my 5 stars and well worth the price they are asking here.

but I have an Intermediate's curiosity about how to get better. I found Poker Knows starts to bridge this ...
By Gwarbot
I'm one of those poker players who is a complete Amateur, but I have an Intermediate's curiosity about how to get better. I found Poker Knows starts to bridge this gap by having a kind of "zen" quality to it. Hull emphasizes "it's not about your cards," because everyone gets the same cards. Although that concept seems basic, it's still hard to not only fully grasp, but act on intelligently. It's almost like Luke Skywalker putting on that helmet and having to use only the Force as the training droid zaps him into humiliation - but just at first.

The ease with which Hull moves from concept to concept, building a kind of "fluid" way to approach your game is really impressive. It's already made me a more thoughtful player online - my two little cards aren't my full concern like they were when I started playing. What's the guy to my immediate left really doing? Why is that other guy always admitting when he bluffs? And why oh why did I not just re-raise? Hull gets at all of this, and TONS more. I'm really looking forward to what's next from this author.

Charting and Technical Analysis, by Fred Mcallen

To invest successfully or trade in Stocks, Options, Forex, or even Mutual Funds, it is imperative to know AND understand price and market movements that can only be learned from Technical Analysis. You should NEVER attempt Trading or Investing without it! My 25 years experience has taught me that 'every book on the market' regarding Charting and Technical Analysis is seemingly worthless. All seem to find yet another creative way to tell you to “Buy Low and Sell High.” And they offer NO in-depth understanding or analysis about WHO is buying and WHO is selling, and when. Point is, anyone, experienced or not, can show you a picture of a Chart and tell you to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. That is simple 'hindsight,' and is always 20/20. This book is different! It is IN-DEPTH – EXPLAINED and you WILL learn price movements and technical analysis from this information! You will understand and recognize tops and bottoms in the market and in particular stocks, AS they are forming. This is highly valuable information, and you should NEVER attempt to trade or invest without this knowledge. Mutual Funds? Most people think they do not need this information because the have a Mutual Fund. That could not be farther from the truth. Investing your hard-earned money should be done with your own knowledge of market direction, when to buy, and when to move your money to safety. Without this knowledge you are at the mercy of a salesperson hungry to earn a commission. Thus, invariably entering the market at the wrong time and in the wrong investment. No one else has your best interest in mind. So learn to protect your money or keep it in the bank. It's that simple. The next move is yours.

From the Author
In 2000, and again in late 2007 as the market was topping out, I could see that financial advisors were continually selling investment products to unsuspecting investors that would certainly result in a loss. They had no plan to protect the investment capital, no real knowledge of market trends or bear markets, they were just making a sale.

Realizing some of those investors would wait years to see net profit, or may never break-even, I became determined to provide individual investors with the tools and information necessary to make their own investment decisions. This book will hopefully enable every investor to make wise decisions and avoid the pitfalls of the treacherous investing world.

I firmly believe the individual investor should never risk money without first understanding technical analysis and also reading my book, 'Common Sense Investing.'

From the Inside Flap
Fire your Financial Advisor!

Yes, that is a bold statement.
The primary objective in this book is to prepare you to take charge of your investment decisions by learning charting and technical analysis in detail. You will no longer be sold an investment at the wrong time, during adverse market conditions, or when the market is topping out and ready to decline. You will only put your money at risk when the odds of a great return are in your favor.

"The cornerstone of the technical philosophy is the belief that all of the factors that influence market price--fundamental information, political events, natural disasters, and psychological factors-- are quickly discounted in market activity."
In other words, the impact of these external factors will quickly show up in some form of price movement, either up or down. Chart analysis, therefore, is simply a short-cut form of fundamental analysis.
As Charles Dow believed, the market discounts everything. All roads of technical analysis inevitably lead back to the Dow Theory. Modern day charting and technical analysis uses the basic foundation of the Dow Theory and encompasses modern charting techniques and strategies to give the investor and trader a distinct advantage.

From the Back Cover
It's not necessary to be an expert chartist to benefit from chart analysis. However, chart analysis will go a long way in keeping the trader on the right side of the market and in helping to pinpoint market entry and exit points, which are so vital to trading success. Trading and Investing with the market should always be your ultimate goal.
Whether the participant is a day trader or a long-term investor, buying at the wrong time is most always a recipe for loss. By implementing chart analysis as an investing and trading tool, investing with the market instead of against it can be attained. That is 90% of the battle.

Excellent guide to technical analysis
By wisdom_invited
The book goes in depth when explaining Dow Theory, Candlesticks, MAs, trending, volume and examples through out of each. He also covers in detail how to use technicals to choose entry and exit points. After reading this book, you should have no problem using techinicals to spot trends, tops, bottoms, and the direction of a stock. The book is well written and very easy to understand, with just a few minimal oversights.

One of the greatest values of this book is the attention to minimizing loses. Had I read this book a long time ago, I would not have rode stocks to the bottom, or jumped in a stock "thinking" the bottom had formed. By that same token, it would have been a lot easier to have spotted the top and locked in profits. This and "Getting Started With Value Investing" by Charles Mizrah should be part of any investors collection, especially those new to investing.

The author goes into great detail explaining the most popular technicals and charts, while just going over in brief things like the MACD, stochastics, and bollinger bands. In the trading I do, I often use what is covered in this book, MACDs, and the RSI charts, and I have done pretty well.

Note:
@ Sudarshan Sukhani
Why would you give the book 1 star and say don't buy the book unless you don't know technical analysis. That's exactly the intended audience. I will admit it may not be the "ultimate" guide to technical analysis, but it is still very solid and thorough. Unless you are a very advanced investor with several years of experience, I don't think you will lose anything by buying this book.

Great for a novice like me
By Sean Richard Edwards
I really enjoyed this book. I have been trying to invest for years, but never taken the time to step out of the long term 'stick' approach; far too emotional, and not clinical. This book has made a lot of things clearer to me, and already I'm looking at charts and making sense....early days, but I feel this is the book I needed, clearly written, and great for a beginner to TA like me.

Reads like a self-published ebook
By Jon N
This book is a good introduction to a broad base of Technical Analysis concepts including Dow Theory, Japanese Candlesticks, and Trends. If you've been trading for a while and have read several other technical analysis books you will not learn anything new as the topics covered in this book has been covered over and over again in other more famous (introduction) Technical Analysis books. However, if you're just "window shopping" the Technical Analysis arena this book will serve you well since it's a short read with very little technical jargon. But if you want more in-depth explanations I suggest resorting to look at other resources.

When reading this book you can clearly realize that this book was self-published and was originally an e-book. Many times the author will ask the reader to look at the "blue" (or some other color) lines on the chart BUT THE BOOK IS PRINTED IN BLACK AND WHITE. Also, I found some of the sections confusing to novice readers since the author introduces a few concepts that is either not covered in the book or it is only to be introduced several pages/sections down.

The History and Religious Heritage of Old Cairo: Its Fortress, Churches, Synagogue, and Mosque, by Gawdat Gabra

Recipient of the 2013 PROSE Awards Architecture & Urban Planning honorable mention
Just to the south of modern Cairo stands the historic enclave known as Old Cairo, which grew up in and around the Roman fortress of Babylon, and which today hosts a unique collection of monuments that attest to the shared cultural heritage of ancient Egyptians, Christians, Jews, and Muslims.
In this lavishly illustrated celebration of a very special place, renowned photographer Sherif Sonbol's remarkable images of the fortress, churches, synagogue, and mosque illuminate the living fabric of the ancient and medieval stones, while Gawdat Gabra describes the history of Old Cairo from the time of the ancient Egyptians and the Romans to the founding of the first Muslim city of al-Fustat. Stefan Reif focuses on the Jewish history of the area, exploring the famous Genizah documents found in the Ben Ezra Synagogue that tell so much about everyday life in medieval Egypt. Gertrud van Loon looks at the early Coptic Christian churches, some of the oldest in the world, and Tarek Swelim describes the arrival of the Muslims in the seventh century, their establishment of al-Fustat on the edge of Old Cairo, and the building of the Mosque of 'Amr ibn al-'As, the oldest mosque in Africa.

Review

"Cairo is not only the crossroads of civilizations and the cradle of Arab nationalism and of Islam, it is also a multi-dimensional mosaic of religions and religious heritage. Carolyn Ludwig has captured these textured layers of past and present in this delightful book that focuses on Old Cairo. The pictures are magnificent. Each alley and byway comes alive. The scholarly articles artfully explain and envelope the history and majesty of the mosques, churches, and synagogue. Ms. Ludwig draws the reader into the mystery and allure of Cairo."--Daniel Kurtzer, former US ambassador to Egypt

"Old Cairo encompasses a rich treasure of history, tradition, and culture and houses the world's most profound collection of ancient Egyptian, Christian, Jewish, and Islamic heritage, representing every historical era. This deeply informative and illustrated volume explains and illuminates the aesthetic and the religious importance of Old Cairo: the authors have crafted a very timely book for anyone interested in Old Cairo's rich religious tradition, an excellent eye opener to a shared cultural history that is seemingly crucial for all of us to be cognizant of."Dr Ali Gomaa, Grand Mufti of Egypt

"A wonderful book with lovely photographs that take us into the heart of this special area . . . . The text is detailed and scholarly, while Sherif Sonbol's photographs and Morris Jackson's design are exquisite, bringing the area and its history alive. This book is truly a collaborative effort, fitting for an area so rich in the history of so many people."--Egypt Today

Excellent Volume That Masterfully Combines the Academic and Pictorial
By Coptic Studies student
This is an excellent volume from a diversity of religious scholars, art historians, and archaeologists with a combined dozens of years of experience working in the region. I came to this volume as a student in Coptic Studies but what makes this volume unique is that it is relevant for a much broader audience because Old Cairo is a microcosm of the complexities of Egyptian history as seen through one region's diverse religious history. Also notable is that this volume is not merely academic. It is certainly scholarly but it combines this with superb photographs to provide the reader a visual experience as well that is unique and commendable for a university press publication. I fully recommend this volume to students of Egyptian religious history, Coptic scholarship, and art and archaeology.

This is one of the most beautiful books I ever have seen
By Michael Saad
“This is one of the most beautiful books I ever have seen. Right now, it still adorns my desk as I want to brag about it to everyone.” These are the words emailed to me by a senior faculty-administrator at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) in California. The email was on the occasion of celebrating this outstanding book by holding a public lecture and book signing on April 24, 2013. The event was cosponsored by the CGU Department of Religion’s Councils for Coptic Studies, Islamic Studies and Jewish Studies. Please see announcement at: http://www.cgu.edu/pages/5232.asp?item=7147

The world, especially the Middle East, needs candles such as The History and Religious Heritage of Old Cairo: Its Fortress, Churches, Synagogue, and Mosque. The multi-faith, multi-disciplinary mix of co-editors, co-authors, photographer, and publishers produced such a magnificent volume under the most unstable of circumstances in Egypt. Their product illustrates what miracles can be made when good will, collaboration and expertise are combined. Chapter authors are world-renowned experts and leaders in their respective fields.

Besides being a celebration of multi-faith Old Cairo, the book is an intellectual delight for scholars, students and laity. It is also the second best thing for those who cannot adventure as tourists in Old Cairo. The book would also make an excellent gift to those interested in Christian, Islamic and Jewish traditions.

The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell

Much more than a simple horror story. Richard Connell wants us to question the very idea of civilization and what it means to be a civilized human. General Zaroff may have sophisticated conversations, wear formal London-tailored evening clothes, and speak three languages—but he also hunts down other human beings like animals. And that's partly because he doesn’t see any difference between humans and animals. (Well, that, and he's a nutso psychopath.) He claims that he doesn't hunt other civilized beings: he hunts the “cast-offs” of the world, as he calls them, “sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels--a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them."

About the Author
Richard Edward Connell Jr. (1893 – 1949) was an American author and journalist, probably best remembered for his short story "The Most Dangerous Game". Connell was one of the most popular American short story writers of his time. He had equal success as a journalist and screenwriter and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1942 for best original story.

From AudioFile
Ziggurat Productions employs multiple voices to tell this haunting classic short story about a hunter becoming the hunted. Accomplished big-game hunter Sanger Rainsford is washed ashore on a South American island owned by General Zaroff, a maniacal sportsman whose quarry is the two-legged kind. When Rainsford finds himself the prey of the madman, he must kill or be killed. The readings are quite good, and the story is enhanced by appropriately menacing music. The script sticks fairly close to the original tale, with only minor enhancements and additions, and a shift in the narrative voice. A masterfully crafted edge-of-your-seat thriller.
By Christian Engler
Winner of the 1924 O. Henry Memorial Prize for Best Short Story (the Pulitzer Prize for stories) The Most Dangerous Game, also known as "The Hounds of Zaroff," is quite a thrilling and twisting read, a work consisting of approximately 34 pages, give or take, depending on the edition you choose from.

In the dead of night, two men, Whitney and Sanger Rainsford (no relation), who are both avid hunters, are on a yacht. Sanger is a noted author on hunting and somewhat of a playboy. The two are looking at what appears to be an isolated island ominously nicknamed Ship-Trap Island. While looking out, they discuss the game of hunting and briefly the ethics of it, analyzing the concept of fear and death that animals must surely sense when they are caught in the range of the hunter's guns. While Whitney is more sympathetic and open-minded of what the animals must sense, Sanger is indifferent, saying only, ""...Who cares what a jaguar feels. Bah! They've no understanding." It is a belief he'll come to regret; they also talk about the territory's supposed evil reputation by way of sailor lore. With the discussion coming to a close, Whitney turns in, thus leaving Rainsford alone on the deck. Mulling over things, Rainsford hears shots coming from the island, and while straining to see better, he loses his balance and falls overboard. Via the current and his own swimming ability, he lands on Ship-Trap Island without anyone on the boat noticing his disappearance.

On the island, he encounters the suave yet diabolical General Zaroff, a man whose passion for hunting surpasses that of his own. However, Zaroff does not hunt animals of the four legged variety. Staying in his opulent and well furnished island manor, Rainsford becomes well rested and unknowingly fattened up, all prep work done by Zaroff who wants his preys to be well nourished and fully energized for the chase; as Zaroff explains his joy at hunting humans to Rainsford, he becomes deathly ill at the inhumanity of it all. Zaroff simply delights in pursuing people who will use their ingenuity, wits and determination to survive. "Throw-away" people, as he sees it, will not be missed, for they were created for the pleasure of the strong. He looks at people the way hunters look at animals. It is just that black and white with nothing in between. Being a hazy witness to one of these hunts, Rainsford immediately wants off the island, but it's just not that easy, for he has to partake of the horror like all the others if he wants his freedom. And chances are, with Zaroff's acute hunting ability, he will not leave, for Zaroff's hunting record is 100% perfect, no losses whatsoever. Can Rainsfords survive the three days of open hunting with a maniac who knows all and assumedly sees all? That's the thing.

The Most Dangerous Game was a thought-provoking read, because it can be applied to all aspects of hunting and trying to quench the endless thirst of that which we most want, be it power, materialism, sex, vanity, money, a laundry list attached to the human psyche that can be endlessly yearning and strategizing but never fulfilled.

Best Kindle Version Available at Time of Review
By Devin Goddard
As far as the story, suffice it to say this is one of my favorite short stories. There are plenty of other reviews available concerning the content of the story, so I concern myself primarily with the presentation on the kindle.

Having first tried the other version available, The Most Dangerous Game - New Century Edition with DirectLink Technology, and finding that it had an unwelcome abundance of typos, I downloaded this version instead. Unlike the other version, this version actually breaks the text into paragraphs, this very welcome and make the story much more pleasant to read. There are two notes built in to the story as editorial comments on what certain words mean. Although these comments are unnecessary to the understanding of the story, they are not unwelcome. The biggest plus is that I haven't noticed typos in this version like I did in the other version.

Overall, I think formatting is well done and works perfectly for the kindle. If you want to purchase this story for your kindle buy this version.

P.S. There is another reviewer of the kindle edition that mentions some of the text disappearing. I have not experienced this problem. It's possible this problem did exist and was fixed, but the problem isn't there anymore.

A moralistic classic of fiction.
By A Customer
The short story is out of print, but can be found in:
The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction Sixth Edition / W.W. Norton & Company Available through www.amazon.com
I was required to read this story as part of my mandatory college curriculum. I found the story very intriguing and spotted with divine wisdom. The story views hunting and obsession in a new light. The story was written in 1924, but still feels modern showing the author's stretch for new thinking. I do not find the author's prose to be very smooth or grammatically perfect, but he does have something to say.
If your looking for a good collection of short stories to read, I recommend reading 'The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction'

Excellent book! Details how local governments use drought money in India
By Kimberly Fujioka
This is an eye opening and profound book! You would be surprised how local governments in India are using drought money. In each of the books chapters the author tells a story (narrative) that sounds as entertaining as a novel because the author is such an excellent writer--about specific incidents in different prefectures of India where federal drought money was allocated. In each case the money was never spent or utilized in a manner that aided the actual drought survivors or the families of those who had perished.

The topic sounds sad. But the shenanigans that happen, as we see the route the money takes to get to the local people, are almost funny because of the way the author uses his skills with words and his use of the "understatement" to heighten the absurdity of the situation.

This book is very eye opening about the government in India. It almost reminds me of how ineffective the U.S. has been in its attempt to implement funds for natural disaster relief like with Katrina or others.

The book tells so much about the mentality of the people of India, their perseverance and strength and, in the end, their wisdom in dealing with the government.

Excellent read! Informative and, in a absurdist way, humorous.

Outstanding

Sainath's book provides vignettes of soul-destroying poverty and degradation in the poorest states in India. It is an attempt to correct the `event' approach which the majority of the media takes to India's ills, which tends to view India's problems simplistically as singular aberrations, rather than taking a broader `process' approach, which looks to less immediate causes. His writing is angry and passionate, but always clear.
What certainly comes through in Sainath's book is the incredible arrogance of much of the Indian administration. Save a few isolated cases, the examples of the arrogant official class are myriad - the official insistence that they know better than the very natives who had lived in an area for years; the mass sterilisation of perfectly good cattle, already adapted to the environment, in order to make way for a so-called "super cattle", which turns out to be useless; or the mass uprooting of millions of people to make way for useless dams, now brought to the attention of the West through the thankless activism of Arundhati Roy (the author of the God of Small Things). A consistent theme running through Sainath's reporting is a lack of honest and sincere consultation with the very people the `reforms' are supposed to help.
There are hopeful stories too - like the story of women's collectives. Sainath tells of how groups of women have gotten together and formed organised labour, and which do a better, more efficient work than the more `sophisticated' industries and companies. Indeed, industries come across as monopolies only interested in maintaining their corner of the market, and more than willing to resort to nasty tricks in order to maintain their dominance (for instance, creating rival groups to undermine the administration's trust in such organised groups, social ostracism, even physical abuse). Corrupt officials don't help these collectives' chances either - since the collectives' cheaper and more efficient labour threaten the kickbacks the officials get from the industries.
The Indian middle class are also chastised by Sainath. Like their Western counterparts, they require a diet of horror stories to grab their attention. Hence, stories are often reported as ahistorical events, rather than dealing honestly with the process which led to the `event' in question. More than this, the middle classes have become so numbed to the poverty of the majority, that they require exceptional suffering to warrant their time - thus, there are reports of `epidemics' and `droughts' which are often exaggerations or mistruths.
After a while, I felt myself becoming numbed by the stories. There were simply too many tales of woe. This isn't really a complaint about Sainath's reporting, but maybe more of a plea for longer, more detailed stories from him. But this is the nature of his book, which is essentially a compilation of newspaper articles. Although Sainath makes a plea in his book for a view of Indian poverty as process rather than event, sometimes I felt his stories were too short to support the process approach he himself advocates. Still, this should not stop any reader interested in India from reading this book. It is a shocking indictment of the India that should have been.
A standard criticism of works like Sainath's would be that it is merely critical, and doesn't provide any answers. How can one learn from the mistakes of one's predecessors? The impression I got from Sainath was that the best that could be done is more consultation, more historical awareness, more backup studies, more studies of the actual effects of the reform process itself on the environment and the people actually involved, and so on. It's not a particularly innovative conclusion, but it's probably realistic.

Perfect book for helping small children with their grief.
By Secret
I bought this book to help my four year old daughter deal with the future grief of losing my father. It is such a difficult topic because at this age children are still not fully capable of understanding the permanency of death. She still has trouble understanding that he will never come back. However, she frequently asks to read this book at times when she is really missing him and wants to talk about it. This book has good questions towards the end that can help to get little ones talking about how they are feeling. In one particularly touching moment, the questions led to a good discussion where she told me that she thinks about him often and realizes that he lives on in her, just like in the Lion King.

I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with how to help their children deal with their grief. Warning, you will probably need tissues as you read through the book, but it is a good way to get both of you talking about your feelings at a very difficult time.

Easy to understand
By Beverly A. Moyer
We had 2 deaths in this month both where there were small children left behind. A 24 year old father and a Grandmother. Because of this I searched for books on death directed at young children. I Miss You,: A First Look at Death is wonderful. Written very well addressing small children. I like where it says "When someone dies their body stops working". You can never tell a child that they were sick, because they are afraid if they get sick. If you tell them they died while sleeping, they will not want to go to sleep. If you say they were old, they don't want to get old. I had one child's grandmother had a lot of back pain and it ended up being cancer. Then he thought if you got a back ache you would go to heaven. This is a fantastic book on death for children and I highly recommend it to have on hand before you need it although it arrives fairly quickly. I am an owner/operator of a daycare for over 40 years and have just introduced this into my daycare.

Good book for intended audience
By Douglas D
I bought this book for our four-year-old grandson who is very curious about death, asking poignant questions about the subject.

This book appears to be tailored for children, probably a little older than four, who have recently experienced the loss of someone close to them. Besides the text for the child, it has some notes to the adults about how to present and discuss the material. I recommend not pursuing that path if the child is too young to understand the subject matter at that depth.

Omitting the sidebars, this book is well done, even for our four-year-old.
