The Rape of Sophia Perennis, by Garrison Edwards

Notwithstanding the provocative title, this book is not about a woman or an act of sexual aggression. Sophia Perennis is a Latin term that translates into English as "wisdom perennial." Sophia Perennis is also known as the eternal wisdom, perennial philosophy, and by other names that directly refer to ideas and teachings that focus on the universal underlying perspective that the nature of reality, and specifically humanity, is inherently divine. When one attempts to teach this wisdom, there are many opportunities for confusion. When Sophia is used to control or harm others, she is violated by those who claim to love her; and that is the rape to which the title of this book refers. I wrote this book for those who are ready to take the next step toward an enlightened life. The book is about challenging our assumptions about important everyday life issues, especially religion, in hopes that we might come to understand that the reality in which we live is not necessarily exactly the way we believe it to be. I will quote scientists, philosophers, clergy, saints, sages, and more, who look at things differently than do most of us. In exploring these alternative ideas, I hope to assemble these disparate perspectives into a mosaic that will reveal a much grander view of reality. Another intention of this book is to show evidence of a growing consensus of intelligent people who believe that our species and the entire planet are changing, evolving, expanding, as consciousness and what might be called spirit. This paradigm shift that I, and others, are seeing at this time in history seems like a surge in the natural movement of human consciousness toward transcendence and enlightenment.

About the Author
In 1974, Garrison Edwards wrote a spiritually autobiographical poem titled, "I am not an Ordinary Man". In this poem he asked "Do you see me or do you see my burden?" Perhaps this is the universal question each of us must ask of himself. In the answer may be the first step to enlightened truth. The ordinary man poem was not Garrison's first effort at distilling his spiritual journey into a meaningful message. As early as age 8 he was a seeker, and possibly one of the youngest persons to have ever read Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, the story of the Buddha's spiritual journey to reach enlightenment, cover to cover, more than once. In the years that followed, it was common place to find such books as Alan Watts' The Wisdom of Insecurity among his school books. In the troubled world of 1968, as an American GI in uniform, Garrison wrote and performed protest music in Vietnam. As an artist, his original spiritual music performances have charmed audiences of all sizes. Privately, he is an amazing sculptor. As a Mensa, things came easily; as a seeker he searched for meaning in every "thing", idea, and philosophy. Garrison is one who has traveled his own path of enlightenment through the halls of Christianity, Zen, Tae Kwon Do, Kant, and Kohlberg. Curious, playful and the beneficiary of a fine sense of humor, Garrison Edwards will warm your heart and shock your soul as he welcomes you on his spiritual journey as he challenges authority and common thinking alike. Walking the Journey with him can be a life changing experience from which you may never be able to return to who you thought you were when you were ordinary. Garrison will enable you to know that not being ordinary is just the first step.

Whats in a name?
By Santa Bear
I never would have bought this book, but a friend gave it to me. I'm glad he did.

Since it is on the cover, let me say first that the title is very unfortunate. What was he thinking? It's clever if you happen to read Latin and know it's a play on words. It is explained in the first chapter, too little, too late. Most people will be turned away by the title and miss this very spiritual book. That may be okay though since a lot of people are not ready for the impact that a book like this can have on a person. Fortunately, some are ready, and that's both what this book is about and who it is for.

It is a delightful blend of metaphysics, philosophy, psychology, & religion all built around the idea of Eternal Wisdom (Sophia Perennis), and spiritual awakening. It draws a useful distinction between relative truth and Absolute truth, which is what the spiritual seeker is really seeking. There is much about the ego in this book, which is seen not as something arrogant, but as our personal identity - "who we think we are". It will challenge the truths on which you base your life. The author speaks with the authority of his own personal experience supported by the writings of history's greatest thinkers and spiritual masters.

There seems to be a lot going on in the world these days. Things are changing so fast it's hard to know what's important. THIS BOOK IS IMPORTANT. As Ian Dixon says on the back cover, "it is THE guidebook for the 21st century."

Absolutely 5 stars, in spite of the title. READ THIS BOOK.

Not about our "invisible friend in the sky"
By Andrew Cort, author of THE DOOR IS OPEN
"Joseph Campbell" notes Garrison Edwards in this remarkable book, "saw myth as vital to the existence of humanity." This is so crucially true, and its recognition is so vitally necessary for our spiritual health. Among contemporary people, myths tend to be dismissed as childish fantasies or the unscientific gropings of primitive minds. But the mythological vision of the world has always been, and still remains, an important way of experiencing and understanding reality. Myths reflect our deepest psychological and spiritual truths.

But what about Religion? "As long as religion remains in the realm of mythology," Edwards continues, "its power contributes to the welfare of humanity by pointing to truth; it is when religion aspires to be considered truth, in a factual or historical sense that problems arise. In the words of Campbell, `Whenever the poetry of myth is interpreted as biography, history, or science, it is killed.'"

Edwards understands this, he understands that Religion can be used either way: (1) as a history and morality lesson, which, since the stories of each religion differ from the history and morality lessons of other cultures, becomes a justification for arguing and beating each other over the head because of disagreements; or (2) as mythological symbolism that instructs the soul in the requirements of its inner journey. In this latter sense, when taken inwardly and psychologically, the stories are all the same. "We have, then, these two totally different religious perspectives," as Campbell notes.

So it does irk me a tad when Edwards then goes on to say things like, "the view left to Western culture by its religions is that nature, both externally and our own inner nature as human beings, is a force to be overcome and controlled for the greater good." Indeed, much of western religious belief has been reduced to a mere literal fundamentalism and a childish belief in an "invisible friend in the sky", while atheists scoff and many serious religious people turn to the East for `real' spirituality. But the spiritual essence still remains within the great religions of the West - hidden under a lot of muck, perhaps, but still there.

Despite this one point of dissension, however, I unreservedly must say that this is a marvelous book, filled with powerful and elegant writing, and a great devotion to philosophy (as Socrates would have defined it) and the whole realm of the world's great mythologies. I am especially grateful for his emphasis on Sophia, and the horror of what our civilization has done to her.

Not for the intellectually lazy, or for those looking for how-to books that promise to `fix your problems'. Highly recommended.

Excellent Book
By Gary Miller
It is the elusive quality of enlightenment... the search for that subtle path. We all want to know Sophia Perennis ... eternal wisdom. Scholars and prophets alike have searched for the secret formula and have found there is no magic bullet. Churches and spiritual paths have tried to define it.

Garrison Edwards comes face to face with spiritual truth. He discusses his life changing transformation, an experience to which each of us can relate. He exposes truth and helps us to understand our own search. The wisdom in this book may invite you to never return to who you thought you were. The book invites you to question reality and challenge your assumptions, your beliefs and question what you have come to accept as truth.

If you have ever questioned faith, wondered about the meaning of life, or thought about what happened in 2012, this book is a must read! It is a meaningful, well documented work that shines a light under the door. Garrison Edwards warms your heart and shocks your soul in this adventure of discovery, as he challenges authority and common thinking alike.

The book is a life changing work. A bit of a provocative, intellectual title ... but a great read with an impressive list of authors that will inspire you as well.

If you think your life could be different...do the one click.
