About the Author
Allen Rubin has been doing and teaching research since 1976, when he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Renowned in social work, Dr. Rubin has written several research texts, published numerous research studies on social work practice, and is a past president of the Society for Social Work and Research.

Muddled prose, can lead students into statistical errors

I wanted to like this book. The title is great for the course I will be teaching. I quickly found problems, but felt 'well, I can teach around that point.' After working through 100 or so pages I began to ask myself: "If I have to struggle at understanding what the author should be saying, how will students possibly understand?" There are many examples, but I will give one for stat teachers who might read this. EVERYONE who teaches stat knows that we do not prove the null hypothesis; we merely reject it or let it stand. Rubin instead goes through a discussion (see p. 102) about why we would not "confirm the null hypothesis." The discussion centers on the idea that the probability found might be 0.15 or 0.20 ---- that suggests, he says, that we cannot be sure that the null is true. He thus tempts the student to think, "well, if I calculate a t or r and find the probability to be 0.80, maybe then I have shown the null to be true." What EVERYONE, author, teacher, and student, should say is that with small sample sizes, we will often not reject really false null hypotheses. Instead, all we need to do, as implied by Rubin, is test a small sample discover that a very large probability, and presto, we have confirmed the null hypothesis. (SPSS results will provide such large probabilities even though they are not available in t, F, etc. tables in stat books.)
Regretfully, I am still looking for a text for the Spring class.

Reads terrible

I am almost through my statistics class and if it wasn't for the tutor, teacher, and fellow classmates I would have struggled with just reading this book. It jumps all over the place and over examples things. ARG! is how I felt every time I read it.

Overall, a good textbook for statistics in social work practice

This is a good basic text to learn statistics for social work research. I am giving it 3 stars because there are some areas where I found the authors to go into great length to explain things that are more confusing than helpful. These areas that I found confusing were not covered in my graduate school stats class, and I therefore found it unnecessarily complicating the already daunting subject. Overall, the authors are great teachers in their clarity of writing style, presentation of information, and ability to explain complex matters to a wide audience.
In my book: "Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide", I fully explore the spiritual side-effects of trauma, and how the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is a powerful systematic approach for the trauma survivor seeking a spiritual solution.
